My mum has been a resident at Barchester Briardene Care Home since May and it has been the best thing for her. Mum has Alzheimer's with challenging behaviour, the carers at the home are fantastic and her care has been very good!
The activities are very good and Mum has found on a daily basis. Mum always
looks tidy and clean too. Communication with the home is always very easy and friendly.
Reply from June Hoggart, Manager at Barchester Briardene Care HomeThank you for your great review, we are always happy when our families take the time to do a review. It is an absolute pleasure to look after your mum and are happy that you feel that she is doing well in our care. I will feed your lovely comments back to the staff.

My dad moved to Barchester Briardene Care Home from almost two months in hospital and following one and a half years at a care home. We were initially sad that his previous care home could no longer meet his needs; however, we knew from our initial meeting with Briardene management that Briardene was
the best place for him to receive care.
All of the staff at Briardene show real understanding of his dementia and complex needs and are always respectful of his personality and individual preferences. He has been at Briardene for about eight months now and we are 100% confident in the care he continues to receive.
Reply from Christine Winkley, Registered Nurse at Barchester Briardene Care HomeThis is the most lovely review. We are delighted to care for Dad and we are so happy that you feel he is well looked after. At Briardene, we pride ourselves in the fact that we embrace a person-centred approach to care and everyone is looked after as an individual. Our staff will be delighted with your thoughts of how well we are doing to support Dad. Thank you.

My husband has been cared for at Barchester Briardene Care Home for the last three years, sadly passed away on March 10th. He was in the most wonderful place, I always felt it was a place for both of us. It was my second family, nothing was too much trouble for them. Such loving, caring, warm people
with hearts of gold. They all treated my husband with respect and we've seen how attached they get to residents. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
Miss you all so much.

My stepdad has been well looked after. Staff are very caring with my stepdad and me and my mam. They make us feel part of the family, always welcome us and the care provided is 100%. Staff are lovely and brilliant with Stepdad, even when he gets agitated, they always have a smile on their faces and
genuinely care. Food is lovely, room is always clean and cosy.

My father was a resident at this care home for nearly two years however he recently passed away on the 26th April 2024. During his time at Briardene Dad received exceptional care from what I can only describe as a totally dedicated and totally professional team. The care provided didn't just stop at
Dad; it was extended to the whole family every time we visited - in fact it's fair to say that the team at Briardene felt like an extension of our own family.
Dementia is a cruel disease and it is heartbreaking to watch it slowly but surely destroying a person however simple things like Dad always having clean clothes, having a regular haircut, having a daily shave, eating excellent food and living in a clean environment make it all the more bearable - thank you team Briardene for everything thing that each of you did for Dad.
We celebrated Dad's life last week and it meant so much to us that many of the team from Briardene came along to the Crematorium to wish him farewell!
Reply from June Hoggart, Manager at Barchester Briardene Care HomeThank you so very much for this wonderful review, it was an absolute honour to look after your Dad. The staff paid a final tribute to a true Gentleman because he was much loved by us all. Thank you for the kindness you as a family have shown the full staff team at Briardene. I will pass your comments on to the staff and they will be delighted that you have taken the time to give us such an amazing review.

My husband passed away in Barchester Briardene Care Home. He had lived there for three and a half years. From the first day he moved in until the day he passed away, he was loved and cared for amazingly under excellent management and her team were magnificent. They cared for us, as a family. In my husband's
final days, each and every member of the team looked after us. I can't thank each and every one of you enough. The manager is an amazing lady, well done for choosing such excellent staff.

My dad has been here a few years now and the care he gets remains excellent, after having him in a home that was not well-equipped to suit his needs. He is a handful and they take it all in their stride. Love visiting even when he’s not happy we all get through it together, a nice family environment.
The food is delicious you can have a meal too with your loved one.

My wife was a resident at Briardene for the past 7 years until she passed away in January 2024. Throughout this period she was shown the utmost care and devotion to her needs from what I would consider to be the most professional staff I have ever encountered in any setting. My background as a social
worker gives me a particular insight across a wide range of settings by which to compare. The staff were always kind and considerate to our family members and went that extra mile when we were faced with the loss of my wife. The whole family recognized the quality of the work done by the dedicated staff and will be forever grateful to every one of them for this.
Reply from June Hoggart, Manager at Barchester Briardene Care HomeThank you very much for this amazing review and can I say that it was an absolute pleasure and a privilege to look after your loved one, and also to support you and your family throughout the seven years that your loved one has been in our care. Your review means an awful lot to us and the staff will be so happy that you have taken the time to do this.

First of all, Happy New Year to everyone at Barchester Briardene. Thank you all for going above and beyond at Christmas. Had Xmas dinner with our loved one, and even had a table for two set for my daughter and myself, wonderful. Lovely Christmas lunch. As we go into the New Year, myself and my family
would like to express our thanks and gratitude to every one of you, for your excellent continuing care of our loved one, nothing is too much trouble. Briardene is a home from home, so friendly and caring, like one big family. I would 100% recommend this home. Once again, big, big thank you to you all.

My husband has been a resident at Briardene for only a very short time but I am already impressed with, and reassured by, the care, patience and understanding the manager and her entire team are showing him and his family members. Our daughter and her two young children, who do not live in the northeast,
had not seen him for three months and I was concerned that visiting him in Briardene at such an early stage could be upsetting for all. I need not have worried. Staff enabled us all to be together in a small, cosy lounge, an ideal setting, and provided much-appreciated refreshments. My husband has a rare dementia and his journey will undoubtedly continue to be challenging but I feel confident that all the staff will support him and us along the way.
Reply from June Hoggart, Manager at Barchester Briardene Care HomeThank you very much for this wonderful review, we are pleased that you feel confident with our home and staff and hope that your loved one settles in and becomes part of the Briardene family. My husband has lived in this care home for over two years now and his care has been excellent. He was taken to hospital in March and I was told he was on end-of-life care. He went back to Briardene and was put on palliative care and nine weeks later he is still there. I cannot praise the staff enough.
Every one of them is so caring, friendly and happy in their work. My husband's room is always clean and his food is adapted to his needs. Fantastic care home.

Briardene: Part of my life for 11 years, rated as outstanding because it's true. The staff are trained to give the highest standard of professional care but gradually develop empathy, understanding and that vocation that surpasses the words work or job, true. A resident's personal care, room and physical
and emotional well-being are supported by a team of cheerful people who take pride in their contribution to making life as comfortable, involved and active as possible, true. Individual needs are monitored, discussed and catered for. Staff designated to individuals to ensure information and records are updated correctly and available, true. Communication with families is prompt, inclusive and reassuring because of all of this the quality of life has improved and extended, they go the extra mile. My journey with the staff of Briardene has now ended, at the beginning I was anxious until I trusted them, gradually a great weight lifted from me and I could see a way forward. We were both 'looked after' by Briardene, all true.
Reply from June Hoggart, Manager at Barchester Briardene Care HomeKath, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this beautiful review, thank you for allowing us to care for your husband who is missed every day by all of the staff. Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.945)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.945) out of 10 for Barchester Briardene Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 31 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.945 for Barchester Briardene Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (347 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 366 Ratings = 4.945
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Briardene Care Home is based on 31 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8, which has been reached with 31 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I oversee the home's HR processes, recording of staff hours, recruitment and training records.

I joined the team here at Briardene in 2018 and I have never looked back, it is a fabulous place to work where residents and colleagues are now my extended family. I was in the military for a lot of years and coming to work here really helped me settle back into civilian life. I brought with me a vast amount of knowledge and experience in the Administration field as it has been a huge part of my career from leaving school, however, the training I have received working in a Barchester home has really expanded this knowledge.
