My mum is looked after with loving care by the Buttermere staff. As I have to travel, I'm grateful for the welcome I receive from everyone. Sadly, my mum is very ill, but she is being looked after in a kind and caring way by all the Buttermere members of staff. Thank you for looking after my mum - she is very happy at Summerhill.

My wife has been here a week. She is now comfortable in her room and comfortable in Summerhill. She enjoys the food and thinks highly of the staff who are very cheerful. I was struck on my first visit with a welcoming and caring atmosphere.

We received a very warm welcome on Saturday morning from a lovely helpful receptionist.

We then experienced a male activities team member who delivered a quiz on Thirlmere Suite. It was evident that he was very in tune with the residents and tailored the morning's entertainment to suit them. He was very kind and included everyone. The care staff were as usual on hand to answer any questions. They too clearly know their residents very well. The home is tastefully decorated, clean, and inviting. The atmosphere was calm and the staff appear to be happy and engaged with those in their care. There can't be a better care home. Well done to the team at Summerhill.

Our mum was very well cared for whilst at Summerhill. Staff were kind, hard-working, efficient and helpful and we are very grateful for all they did for Mum. Reception staff always took the time to chat with Mum and were always so kind, showing an interest in what she was doing and sharing a joke together. Buttermere staff always gave the impression that nothing was too much trouble and ensured that all Mum’s needs were met, along with those of all the other residents. They created a warm, family atmosphere in the unit and often went above and beyond for their residents (and residents' families). We were always well informed about Mum’s health and well-being. The well-being team are fantastic at providing varied activities and entertainment for the residents and take time to get to know them all personally. The well-tended garden was a good focus of a visit. A huge thank you to all the staff. You do an extremely important job and are very much appreciated.

Each time you enter and leave the home, you receive a warm welcome, and genuine interest is shown in how you and your family are. This atmosphere continues on to the unit, which I can only describe as perfect.
All staff go about their work in a professional manner and are both friendly and helpful. It has been clear they are all really good with people, which brings residents and visitors alike. The staff took the time to chat with Dad, and I was delighted that they were jovial, having picked up that he had a good sense of humour. Dad’s room and the communal areas were always extremely clean. The meals were well-presented and nutritious.

The care that the nurses provided blew me away. The clinical knowledge and experience of the nurses allowed them to manage Dad's ever-changing needs in a proactive way. The nurses are empathetic and took the time to keep in contact and explain anything I needed clarification on.

I attended Summerhill's first carol service since Covid with my mum. It was so nice to see all the residents who wanted to be there together and faces light up as they remembered the carols and joined in with the words. My mum loved it and I loved seeing the joy it sparked in her. A big thank you to the staff for organising and making it happen.

A warm welcome awaits visitors. This welcome by the staff extends to the floor we visit. It became clear from the beginning of our visit to Summerhill that all staff display commitment in every aspect of caring for the person. Kindness is displayed continuously. The person we visit mentions to us "how wonderful" the staff are. There is also mention of the lovely meals they are served daily. The overall cleanliness is excellent. The resident's lounge is beautiful. It is clear the decor/furniture has been throughout carefully for the comfort of all residents. Overall, my husband and myself believe the residents are well cared for and are happy and content during their time in Summerhill.

My friend has only been in Summerhill for five weeks after being in hospital since August. He is very poorly and hasn't left his room except for a ride in the wheelchair to see the lounge and dining room. He likes Summerhill and enjoys being looked after by the carers who have all been very nice to him. His room is always tidy and spotlessly clean and I just hope his health improves and then he can mix with the other residents.

Mostly very good, especially when my husband quite often, is poorly. Not enough entertainment, but realise this could be due to covid. Staff very kind to a worried wife.

It's the first week since my friend moved in. From the first second I walked in, I felt at home. It's such a relief to have her in such a safe and lovely place. Staff genuinely care. We went to the gardens for a sit today, and it was beautiful - shade or sun and lovely plants. All the staff work so hard. It would be even better with more staff, but they do their best.

We have been delighted with all aspects of care from our first warm welcome. All members of staff have been kind, caring, sympathetic, and above all, patient. Some carers have gone above and beyond to bring happiness to my husband. They really do care. My only issue, as it is difficult to take my husband out, is the lack of visitors' rooms, with visits confined to bedrooms or garden, more of an issue in winter. This may be a result of Covid restrictions.

Reply from Diane Kerwin, Hospital Liaison Team Administrator at Summerhill Care Home

We are fully open to visitors. Visiting can be facilitated in the garden (weather dependent), communal areas (with compliance to current procedures) and residents’ bedrooms. We can cater for larger parties to enable you to continue celebrations and to enjoy that glass of wine with your relatives....

I chose the home for my husband as I liked the brightness and cleanliness of the entrance and the pleasant staff. The room chosen for my husband was light, clean and looked on the garden. All carers seen were friendly and caring and treated my husband with dignity. They said my husband could do what he wanted, not what they wanted. The reviews were excellent, and why I chose the home for my husband along with all the caring staff.

The Summerhill staff have been generally very kind and considerate to my parents, one of which needs full nursing care. After the initial shock of illness and the loss of their independence, they have now settled well and are happy and grateful for the care and support they received. Some additional pre-emptive checking of mental conditions/issues would be beneficial, but overall, the level of care is very good, considering the vulnerability of both my parents. We are all very grateful to the staff.

A really warm and welcoming home. They have provided excellent care and have been able to provide consistent reassurance and information to myself when required. The home is full of kind and compassionate staff, providing personalised care - even managing lots of football-related discussions with my dad, so he feels at home. Thank you.

Mum has had the best possible nursing and care since arriving at Summerhill last January following 9-weeks in hospital. Although I have not been able to access her room due to restrictions, I am nevertheless aware of the high standards maintained by the Summerhill team. Mum is happy, and they are now her family. They are unfailingly patient, kind and leave no stone unturned. There is real joined-up thinking in place. As a relative and visitor, I am treated with friendship and courtesy, and full explanations as deemed necessary. Thank you, Summerhill... keep up the good work... it is truly valued.

I have been to visit my Mum for the first time since March 2020 today and I just want to let the home know how amazing Mum looked and this is all because of the wonderful care that she is given by all the staff. Nothing is too much trouble for them in these difficult times. All the staff are so helpful and really want the best for the residents. They also have a really good activities team who made the visit special.

Mum had excellent care at Summerhill for 15 months before her recent death. She was content and often told us that she could not have been better looked after by all who looked after her. Food good with plenty of choices. Room clean and comfortable. Activities enjoyable and varied. Garden well maintained and a pleasure to sit in. Everything that could have been done to turn a building into "home" was done. We were met with a friendly welcome from everybody we saw whenever we visited and during the recent COVID lockdown were kept well informed of mum's health and well being.
