Summerhill Care Home, situated in the charming Cumbrian town of Kendal, supports older people to lead their best lives with personalised residential, nursing and dementia care.

I attended Summerhill's first carol service since Covid with my mum. It was so nice to see all the residents who wanted to be there together and faces light up as they remembered the carols and joined in with the words. My mum loved it and I loved seeing the joy it sparked in her. A big thank you to
the staff for organising and making it happen.

A warm welcome awaits visitors. This welcome by the staff extends to the floor we visit. It became clear from the beginning of our visit to Summerhill that all staff display commitment in every aspect of caring for the person. Kindness is displayed continuously. The person we visit mentions to us "how
wonderful" the staff are. There is also mention of the lovely meals they are served daily. The overall cleanliness is excellent. The resident's lounge is beautiful. It is clear the decor/furniture has been throughout carefully for the comfort of all residents. Overall, my husband and myself believe the residents are well cared for and are happy and content during their time in Summerhill.

My friend has only been in Summerhill for five weeks after being in hospital since August. He is very poorly and hasn't left his room except for a ride in the wheelchair to see the lounge and dining room. He likes Summerhill and enjoys being looked after by the carers who have all been very nice to
him. His room is always tidy and spotlessly clean and I just hope his health improves and then he can mix with the other residents.

It's the first week since my friend moved in. From the first second I walked in, I felt at home. It's such a relief to have her in such a safe and lovely place. Staff genuinely care. We went to the gardens for a sit today, and it was beautiful - shade or sun and lovely plants. All the staff work so
hard. It would be even better with more staff, but they do their best.

We have been delighted with all aspects of care from our first warm welcome. All members of staff have been kind, caring, sympathetic, and above all, patient. Some carers have gone above and beyond to bring happiness to my husband. They really do care. My only issue, as it is difficult to take my husband
out, is the lack of visitors' rooms, with visits confined to bedrooms or garden, more of an issue in winter. This may be a result of Covid restrictions.

We are fully open to visitors. Visiting can be facilitated in the garden (weather dependent), communal areas (with compliance to current procedures) and residents’ bedrooms. We can cater for larger parties to enable you to continue celebrations and to enjoy that glass of wine with your relatives. Please speak to the Home Manager if you require a larger visiting space as we are more than happy to accommodate this request.

I chose the home for my husband as I liked the brightness and cleanliness of the entrance and the pleasant staff. The room chosen for my husband was light, clean and looked on the garden. All carers seen were friendly and caring and treated my husband with dignity. They said my husband could do what
he wanted, not what they wanted. The reviews were excellent, and why I chose the home for my husband along with all the caring staff.

The Summerhill staff have been generally very kind and considerate to my parents, one of which needs full nursing care. After the initial shock of illness and the loss of their independence, they have now settled well and are happy and grateful for the care and support they received. Some additional
pre-emptive checking of mental conditions/issues would be beneficial, but overall, the level of care is very good, considering the vulnerability of both my parents. We are all very grateful to the staff.

Mum has had the best possible nursing and care since arriving at Summerhill last January following 9-weeks in hospital. Although I have not been able to access her room due to restrictions, I am nevertheless aware of the high standards maintained by the Summerhill team. Mum is happy, and they are now
her family. They are unfailingly patient, kind and leave no stone unturned. There is real joined-up thinking in place. As a relative and visitor, I am treated with friendship and courtesy, and full explanations as deemed necessary. Thank you, Summerhill... keep up the good work... it is truly valued.

I have been to visit my Mum for the first time since March 2020 today and I just want to let the home know how amazing Mum looked and this is all because of the wonderful care that she is given by all the staff. Nothing is too much trouble for them in these difficult times. All the staff are so helpful
and really want the best for the residents. They also have a really good activities team who made the visit special.

Mum had excellent care at Summerhill for 15 months before her recent death. She was content and often told us that she could not have been better looked after by all who looked after her. Food good with plenty of choices. Room clean and comfortable. Activities enjoyable and varied. Garden well maintained
and a pleasure to sit in. Everything that could have been done to turn a building into "home" was done. We were met with a friendly welcome from everybody we saw whenever we visited and during the recent COVID lockdown were kept well informed of mum's health and well being.

I find this care home very efficient and friendly. The staff go the full mile and are most caring. Nothing is too much trouble and we are all treated with the utmost dignity.
My father was here for 4 years and was extremely happy.

The care given at Summerhill exceeded our expectations. The staff are always responsive to my mother's needs. The care home took full responsibility for my mother so I felt confident leaving her in their care.
The staff greet me with a smile and offer a cup of tea when I visit.

My mother and her family are very happy with the care she is receiving. Her carers go out of their way to look after her and treat her with thoughtfulness, dignity and respect. The staff are very good at relating concerns and enjoyable experiences concerning Mum to our family.


Although usually pleased

with the cleanliness of the home, there recently seems to be a shortage of cleaning staff, resulting in residents' bathrooms not being their usual level of cleanliness and pedal bins not being emptied as frequently as they have been in the past. I feel the carpets in the communal areas (hallway, lounge, dining room) need replacing as they are stained, sticky underfoot and can smell at times.


Although I thank Mum's carers each time I visit, I would like to take this opportunity to pass on to them all my thanks and gratitude for the wonderful work they do.

All the staff that I have come into contact with are friendly and caring. They keep an eye on all the residents and give then drinks regularly and checking that all is well. The lady I visit is very happy here.

When, after 3 years of constant daycare, we were accepted into Summerhill nursing Alzheimer unit. We as a family, could not believe our luck (having been recommended by all my husband's home carers and two friends).
My husband has been there now for three months and he could not be better cared for.
With all the staff so very caring and understanding with his needs. He has changed from being cross, angry, aggressive to quietly happy and I am told at times, very amusing. All down to the staff's compassion but also kindness to me, comprehending how emotional the move has been. The moment you step through the front door of Summerhill you feel a real sense of "fresh air", clean, peace, professionalism but above all caring. 11 out of 10! Having used 6 other care home in Cumbria for respite I feel I am quite a good judge. There is no competition. Exemplary!
