Summerhill Care Home

I have been to visit my Mum for the first time since March 2020 today and I just want to let the home know how amazing Mum looked and this is all because of the wonderful care that she is given by all the staff. Nothing is too much trouble for them in these difficult times. All the staff are so helpful and really want the best for the residents. They also have a really good activities team who made the visit special.

Mum had excellent care at Summerhill for 15 months before her recent death. She was content and often told us that she could not have been better looked after by all who looked after her. Food good with plenty of choices. Room clean and comfortable. Activities enjoyable and varied. Garden well maintained and a pleasure to sit in. Everything that could have been done to turn a building into "home" was done. We were met with a friendly welcome from everybody we saw whenever we visited and during the recent COVID lockdown were kept well informed of mum's health and well being.

I came for respite care and found everyone to be very helpful.

My father was here for 4 years and was extremely happy.

The staff greet me with a smile and offer a cup of tea when I visit.

My mother and her family are very happy with the care she is receiving. Her carers go out of their way to look after her and treat her with thoughtfulness, dignity and respect. The staff are very good at relating concerns and enjoyable experiences concerning Mum to our family.

Although usually pleased with the cleanliness of the home, there recently seems to be a shortage of cleaning staff, resulting in residents' bathrooms not being their usual level of cleanliness and pedal bins not being emptied as frequently as they have been in the past. I feel the carpets in the communal areas (hallway, lounge, dining room) need replacing as they are stained, sticky underfoot and can smell at times.

Although I thank Mum's carers each time I visit, I would like to take this opportunity to pass on to them all my thanks and gratitude for the wonderful work they do.

All the staff that I have come into contact with are friendly and caring. They keep an eye on all the residents and give then drinks regularly and checking that all is well. The lady I visit is very happy here.

My husband has been there now for three months and he could not be better cared for. With all the staff so very caring and understanding with his needs. He has changed from being cross, angry, aggressive to quietly happy and I am told at times, very amusing. All down to the staff's compassion but also kindness to me, comprehending how emotional the move has been. The moment you step through the front door of Summerhill you feel a real sense of "fresh air", clean, peace, professionalism but above all caring. 11 out of 10! Having used 6 other care home in Cumbria for respite I feel I am quite a good judge. There is no competition. Exemplary!

I have been a resident for 7+ years and very satisfied with the care I receive. I am also allowed to have my recorder group meetings and folk group get together in an evening. I can really so as I like.

There are lovely gardens with easy access from the resident's lounges. We were often able to enjoy the colourful outside space during our visits. The activity team were also great. They also took time to get to know what dad liked and made every effort to keep him interested and included. There was always something happening from musical entertainment, exercises or visits from children and animals to mention just a few.

I am satisfied that my wife is receiving the care she requires. The staff at the home are friendly and attentive to my wife's needs. There is a varied range of activities available and meals provided offer a very good selection of choice.

Mum has been in Summerhill for 3 years. She is always clean, well fed and has great care from the patient carers. She has challenging behaviour but they are well trained to cope with her sat in her room. I can hear what is happening outside her room and have never heard any raised voices or any resident be spoken about in an unprofessional manner. We are very lucky to have mum in Summerhill and I have experience of 37 years in healthcare.

Th staff are all very caring, empathic, understanding and supportive and they treat residents with dignity at all times. All needs are met that are humanly possible. Food is nutritious and varied, staff have time for you when visiting, if they are unsure of something they will go and check, they will ring if there is ever a problem. Totally impressed.

Neither myself or my mum (resident's wife) were given an introductory tour, which would have been useful.

The care provided to my dad was very good. He died in Summerhill and I am confident that the care he received throughout his time in the home and in the last weeks and days when he was frail and ill was of a very high standard.

It's very good.

There are a few problems from time to time, usually when the unit is not fully staffed and other residents who are difficult occasionally interrupt overall care. This is understandable.

Mum has improved so much since moving into Summerhill Care Home (I felt that she was being neglected at her last residential home). Her doctor phoned me to tell me what a good move it had been, and that she looks 10 years younger! Staff are friendly, kind, cheerful and respectful. There is a lovely, welcoming atmosphere.

She is happy there.

My mum had pre-senile frontotemporal dementia and passed away in October 2016. She was in Summerhill Care Home, Kendal, Cumbria from June 2012. My family and I would just like to let you know how brilliant they were. The quality of the care, support to us as a family during a tough time was amazing. The great nature of staff and effort they put into looking after mum will be in our minds forever. We will always be grateful.
