A very friendly care home with excellent staff. My father was given excellent attention throughout his stay. The care home was very accommodating to all the families needs, given the personal touch, and going the extra mile. Thank you.

I felt that my uncle was well cared for and had good support while he was in care. We could phone and speak to anyone at any time and they kept us updated with his illness to the end.

My brother was in this care home for just over a month. His care and attention was second to none. This home, to his family, was more like a first-class hotel.

We can only say 'thank you' which is a poor substitute for the care given to him.

I have been very happy with the kindness and care which my husband has been shown since he went into the care home on February 1st 2019. It has been a big step for both of us and obviously he would prefer to be at home, but as his Parkinson's makes him unable to stand or even walk, this is not possible. The carers are attentive, always pleasant and treat him like a friend. He appreciates all that they do for him and they show him great respect.

Our father received sympathetic care appropriate to his needs and wishes from his admission to the care home until his death.
He was treated with kindness and given appropriate nursing care for his needs.
All the family and friends were made very welcome when visiting.
His death was very peaceful and we were all made to feel comfortable with the situation.

Thank you.

Overall Experience

This was the first time Mum had spent time in Berwick Care Home. On arrival, we were met by extremely professional and caring staff who helped settle Mum in very quickly. The home has a very warm friendly and safe feeling and I had no hesitation leaving Mum. When we picked her up she was happy to see us but not in any rush to get away - for me that was very comforting. I have no hesitation recommending this home to anyone and it will certainly be the preferred option for respite care going forward. Thank you so much.

My father has been a resident for almost 2 years and is well settled. I feel confident leaving him in your care and I know from experience that I will be contacted if there is a serious issue. I feel the staff at Berwick Care Home are very caring and on the whole very good with dad, even when he is sometimes difficult. I visit at least twice a week and it's good as I know the staff well.

Overall Experience
My dad had lived at Berwick Care Home for the last 2 years. His physical health had dramatically worsened in the last 9 months.
His increasing extra needs were always taken into account and dealt with accordingly and his increased need for safety, security and dignity were always of prime importance. He became unable to eat "proper" food and had to have everything pureed. He did not like this at all but the kitchen staff became ingenious at preparing various titbits to tempt him and indeed all the care staff also were known to make an input.
As dad's mental health was not an issue, all who passed his door would give him a cheery hello and passed the time of day with him, however busy they were. I know my dad always appreciated this.

He, unfortunately, died this month and the genuine concern for him (and me) was plain to see.

The staff team were friendly and had a good rapport with my dad.
The manager explained that the room my dad had wasn't the best but it was situated next to the nurses' office so they could keep an eye on him.

My dad is very poorly and was in for 2 weeks respite care so I was satisfied with this arrangement.

I found the staff very kind and helpful and were happy to help when asked.

We were offered a better room but it was further away from the nurses' station and it was easier for staff to check on my partner in the room offered.

My friend was only in the care home for three weeks before she died.
During those weeks, she was so well cared for - she was kept so clean and comfortable and the staff treated her with great dignity, up to the end.

My husband and I were looked after so well. We always found the staff friendly and nothing was any trouble.

Mother is very settled and well cared for. The staff are really good and the atmosphere in the home reflects this. It is nice that mother gets the occasional trip out in the minibus to garden centres for coffee and a look around.

The whole place smells clean and it is very good to see so many smiling faces, both staff and residents.

This is now an extremely well-led care home. All the staff I have had contact with, from the manager, nurses, care assistants, catering and housekeeping staff are to be congratulated. The care and attention my father receives is second to none, everyone greets him and our family with the same level of friendliness, he is always treated with dignity and his opinion/choices matter. Twelve months ago when our family were told my father could no longer live at home we had a difficult decision to make in choosing a new home for him, I am pleased to say that we do not regret choosing this one.

Fantastic communication before Dad went into Berwick Care Home. His welcome on arrival was so caring and welcoming from all the staff. When visiting Dad we are always made welcome. Nothing is a problem. His care is fantastic and as he said to us today it's like "Home from Home". The manager is just brilliant.

My friend (for whom I act as next of kin) very much enjoys his outings with the local stroke club. Recently he has needed to be accompanied by a carer and I was impressed and delighted that Berwick CareHome has offered to provide one. The home will also assist with transport so that the club no longer have to pay for taxis./ This is a great outcome.

Tracy Wiggans
Tracy WiggansJob Title:ManagerJoined: 2017
Hi My name is Tracy Wiggans, I have been the manager here now at La Cura House for just over three years.

I was born and brought in Berwick upon Tweed and attended both Tweedmouth middle school and Berwick high school or now known as Berwick Academy.

On leaving school I went on to have three daughters and moved to Cornwall.

When my daughters were young I decided I wanted to care for others so went to work as a care assistant in a care home, then went on to looking after people who had to live with Huntington's disease. Whilst working with people with Huntington's disease this inspired me to want to care for people with mental health needs, so decided to complete my nurse training.

In 2007 I qualified as a registered mental health nurse and I completed various other training courses to support me in caring for people with mental health needs. On qualifying I worked for the NHS as a staff nurse, community psychiatric nurse and a charge nurse.

During my time with the NHS I worked with people who live with dementia and felt I could really make a difference in their lives so decided to leave the NHS and become the head of a dementia unit for a private company, I then became the deputy manager for the same company, the manager and myself along with a great team turned a failing home into a good rated home. Not long after we had succeeded in this I moved to another care home for the same company as the registered general manager.

In 2017 I decided I wanted to move back to my home town of Berwick Upon Tweed and it was fortunate that La Cura House care home, previously known by another name was needing a manager. Unfortunately the home was not in a good position and required a lot of TLC. However with the hard work and dedication we managed to make significant improvements in a short space in time moving it from a home which required improvement to a good home within a year.

We continue to make improvements and I am proud to say the changes that the current staffing team have made and the massive difference to the people we they care for lives.

We have developed a whole new team who have embraced some difficult changes, but changes that are so much for the better. Our home is filled with care and happiness and we will continue to strive to make improvements where needed so that residents continue to live in a happy home.

My name is Margaret Wilson. I work at La Cura House Care Home as Head Cook. I’ve been here a little over 3 years. I really enjoy my job and I love doing home baking, especially birthday cakes. It is great to watch the resident’s faces light up as we sing Happy Birthday to them. I enjoy popping out to see the residents and talking to them about their likes and dislikes.
