My husband spent the final three years of his life at Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home, suffering from advanced dementia. He has been treated with affection and dignity throughout and the staff have become friends to us, as his family. I will miss their smiles and our chats.
The atmosphere at this
care home is a happy one and has given me reassurance at a time when I felt that I should have kept my husband at home for longer, even though I was struggling.
There is a range of facilities on offer and every attempt made to create a feeling of community. The food at Plas-y-Dderwen is of an excellent standard and is served in an impressive dining room.
I would not hesitate to recommend Plas-y-Dderwen to anyone looking for care for a loved one.

I can't rate Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home more. The staff are a lovely, they are wonderful with the residents, every one of them will go out of their way to do there very best for every person who is cared for here. There are 3 lovely entertainment ladies there, they are therapy themselves, always
in happy cheerful mood and organising events.

I had a lovely welcome from all staff who were friendly and helpful throughout my stay. My room was pleasant and clean, as was the home generally. I enjoyed the activities which were varied and I was encouraged to join in. The food was very good also. For me, the breakfast was a bit too late as the
staff were busy getting other residents up before they could serve breakfast, also I was unable to get a cup of tea when I woke up as there were no cups or milk available.

My mom was in Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home for respite for two weeks. She was very apprehensive about going but was immediately put at ease by the friendly welcome from staff. She made friends and enjoyed taking part in the activities on offer. She smiled and laughed a lot more whilst she was
there and felt reassured that she had people around her who were very caring and thoughtful. Mom thought the food was nice and she ate very well there. Plas-y-Dderwen has good facilities and is a clean, pleasant environment. Thank you to all the staff who made her stay so pleasant.

My mother-in-law had been a resident at Plas-y-Ddrewen for over two years before she sadly passed away on 24th March.
I would like to commend the home for the outstanding care and love my mother-in-law was shown whilst there.
Also, as a family, we too were treated exceptionally, nothing was ever
too much, from the admin staff, carers and nursing staff. Also, the manager transforms the home.

My mother has been a resident since January and suffers from Alzheimer's. The decision to place my mother in a care home was an extremely difficult one for my father and I. We initially met with the manager who instantly put our minds at ease with her kind, caring and outgoing nature. Over the last
3 months, my mother's care has been exemplary and I can see that she's safe, happy and well cared for. My mother had lost an unhealthy amount of weight over the last few years but since being at PYD, she's gained weight, thank you Chef! My mother has always been outgoing with a wicked sense of humour and it's plain to see that the staff have become fond of her and her of them. The activities team (in pink) are everyone's favourites. Their enthusiasm is infectious and it's wonderful to see them interacting with the residents. They quickly learned that my mother is a big Elvis fan and placed Elvis posters in her room, which she loves! They also include families in everything they do. Thanks!

My father has been a resident for over a year, suffers from Parkinson's and dementia, and is heavily reliant on the staff for his day-to-day needs, including personal hygiene, etc. Last week, we took him to his dentist for his annual check-up and his first since being a resident of the home. One lady
was already aware of the appointment and ensured he was ready and his teeth brushed in plenty of time. During his check-up, the dentist commented on how Dad's teeth were in excellent condition and was obviously being cared for extremely well by the care home staff and was probably the best he had ever seen from a care home resident. As a family who have trusted my father in the care of the home, this was again very reassuring and evidence of the good care Dad receives. Thanks to you to one particular lady and to all the carers who do their best in often difficult and under-resourced working conditions.

Mum and I had a lovely Christmas Day lunch with Dad, food was delicious, staff, as always, friendly and attentive. Dad received a gift from the home and we won some raffle prizes. Thank you all.

This care home is an amazing place. Sadly, I lost Mum on Boxing Day but the care and friendship Mum was shown during the last twelve months was amazing. Mum said she would never live in a care home, unfortunately, dementia forced this but to Mum, she felt like she was part of the staff and was included
with cards thanking her for being part of the team.
The activities they did were amazing and Mum was constantly entertained and looked after so well. She loved her hair being done too.
The activities coordinator is amazing, Mum classed her as her best friend and she went over and above and you can see she has so many wonderful ideas, she oozes love and enthusiasm.
The head of unit is also a star and knew how everyone was and shows enormous care for all residents.
These were just two staff members but all staff were lovely and couldn’t make you feel more welcome.
The minute I walked in for the first time I was instantly impressed with the lovely environment and glad Mum spent her last days there.

Our experience has been amazing. Staff are very supportive and friendly. My grandfather has been going here for some time for respite and is now a full-time resident after having a very bad experience with a different care home. The manager and staff have gone above and beyond to reassure my grandmother
he is safe, well and very much loved and looked after. Highly recommend - keep doing what you are doing, Plas-y-Dderwen.

An excellent standard of care. Staff are very welcoming. They have a wide range of activities daily. Meals are very good, also the setting is well heated with good parking areas, the new telephone service is very helpful too.

Since the new manager has been in place, staffing seems to be improved. The entertainment staff seem to be settled and there's been a definite upbeat feel to the home. Great entertainment for residents leading up to Christmas. My cousin has lived here just over 4 years she's the happiest I've seen her
there. Positively taking residents out also.

Both of my elderly parents became residents in Plas-y-dderwen in March 2023. Sadly my father passed away in November.
The manager and all care staff in the home have been so kind and supportive to my parents and to us as a family.
My dad was very disabled and blind. Moving to a care home was a
very scary experience for them both but everything possible was done to help them settle in and overcome all the obstacles and worries that they had.
When Dad's condition deteriorated, he was cared for with kindness and empathy. We could not have asked for more.
The manager and activities coordinator even helped us by taking Mum to Dad's funeral and to the family get together afterwards.
Since then, the staff have tried hard to help Mum to cope with her loss and they facilitated a lovely family celebration of her 101st birthday on Jan 1st.
Mum has a very nice room, she is well cared for and is helped by the activities coordinator and another member of staff in particular to join in with activities within the home.
Thank you to everyone at Plas-y-dderwen.

The team at the home have been so kind and caring to my mum.
There is always a lovely, friendly atmosphere and they go above and beyond to make us feel well when we visit.
The transition of moving Mum from hospital into the home was dealt with in such a supportive way, the team around Mum has been
wonderful.

Expectional care from caring staff. Excellent activities and facilities all on one level so no stairs. Food quality is very good. As mum appears happy and content I would say it is good value and Peace of Mind for myself.

My father was a resident at Plas-y-Dderwen for 11 weeks. During that short time, he was cared for by the staff of the Teifi Unit with respect and dignity, especially during his final days. The staff also cared for his family with compassion and empathy during the time he was a resident. I cannot express

My father had been a resident at Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home for ten weeks. During the time Dad was in the home, I found staff to be attentive and caring and they would immediately address any issues of concern identified. Dad was poorly and cared for by staff, led by an experienced lead nurse
on Tywi ward.
As a family, we visited a number of care homes prior to placing Dad at Plas-y-Dderwen. We found the Barchester Care Homes to be far superior to other local homes we visited in terms of cleanliness, retention of staff and approachability and openness to answer queries.
Towards the end of Dad’s life, staff were so kind to myself and my immediate family as we expressed the wish to be with Dad and they ensured we were fed and offered refreshments. The nursing staff explained processes clearly and we witnessed how caring staff were to other residents during our many hours spent at the home.
The overall manager was excellent and available and we thank all the staff for their kindness and care.

My name is Sharon Herbert and I am the Senior General Manager for Barchester based at Plas y Dderwen.


I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1994 and joined Barchester in 2015, firstly working at Plas Y Dderwen before supporting other regions for 4 years helping to improve quality and resident experience. I returned to Plas Y Dderwen in July 2022, whereby as a team we are passionate about the residents that we support and the experience they have whilst in our care. I am committed to a high standard of service delivery, ensuring that the staff also meet the requirements in terms of training and adhering to the Barchester Values of Respect, Integrity, Passion, Empowerment and Responsibility. My nursing background is in a nursing home setting. I have experience in elderly care and young adults with acquired brain injuries, learning difficulties and complex needs. Hi, I am Jacqui Price and I have been working for Plas y Dderwen since 2022. I have nearly forty years of experience in administration and accounts, primarily in the motor industry in and around Hereford and Cheltenham.


I moved to Wales in 2022 and started working for Plas y Dderwen not long after the move. This is the first time I have ever worked in the care industry. The passion I have for ensuring our home runs smoothly, and our residents are cared for with dignity and respect is very rewarding, and I absolutely love my job.

Hi. My name is Kathryn and I’ve worked at Plas y Dderwen since 2023. This is the 3rd Nursing home I’ve had the pleasure of working in. As receptionist, my primary role is to be the first point of contact either by phone or for visitors at the front door. I love to meet and greet and I am always proud to show off our lovely home. I’m also here to provide admin backup to the Home Administrator. Life is busy, varied and no two days are the same.

During my time here I have worked on the different communities of the home and I feel that gives me a varied approach to our residents and their needs. My current role is Head of unit on the Towy community, here we have 32 available beds providing nursing and residential care. I enjoy the day to day working environment as no two days are the same

With over a decade of experience in the care sector since 2009, I'm deeply passionate about working with people and making a positive impact on their lives. I've always had a love for creativity and find joy in bringing smiles to others. My focus is on designing person-centered activities that are not only meaningful but also enrich the lives of our residents, creating moments of fun and fulfillment.

I moved to Wales in September 2022 and joined Plas y Dderwen in October 2022. Working with different units was something I wasn’t familiar with but the staff were supportive. I have been nursing for about 46 years and the last 20 years have been working with residents living with Dementia. I work within the advanced Dementia community and I really enjoy working here in Plas y Dderwen, the staff are friendly and are always happy to help.

I am a nurse who came to work at Plas Y Dderwen eleven years ago. I had previously worked for the NHS for 30+ years as a psychiatric nurse. I work nights on Teifi unit and love my job. I have met the most amazing people during my time here and consider it a privilege to care for people living their journey through dementia and its challenges. The staff I work with are well trained and experienced in delivering a high standard of individualised care. The home is a friendly comfortable environment with plenty of trips and activities going on. The management are very supportive of all the staff and their various needs. Training is ongoing constantly. I particularly enjoy the autonomy and responsibility of managing the unit on nights.
