Whim Hall Care Centre is an 18th Century Manor House that was built by the Duke of Argyll and is set amidst 20 acres of striking country woodland in the Scottish Borders.

The care home has two separate units. Tweed Unit meets the needs of 22 elderly residents with dementia and Whim is a residential unit.

The introduction of themed corridors and 'doll therapy' aids the sensory stimulation of those residents in Tweed Unit, with the focus of Whim Unit being its self-contained flats to help residents develop their own life skills in a safe and sociable environment.

Highly trained staff at Whim Hall are committed to delivering care which is tailored to each individual resident's needs.

Whim Hall has its own culinary team and healthy meals with locally-sourced ingredients are prepared for residents on a daily basis.

My Aunt has been in Whim Hall Care Home for over 5 years and I would like to thank the Staff and Management for the care that was provided for my Aunt. Staff were always approachable. Nothing was too much trouble and anything that was asked of the Carers was promptly attended to. My Aunt was treated
with respect and dignity at all times and she was always at ease when Staff were interacting with her. She enjoyed the musical entertainment, church services and visits from Holly the dog. I was always welcomed when I visited and informed of how my Aunt was getting on, as things were not always easy due to her condition. Visiting was always a pleasure and cups of tea readily available. Thank you everyone at Whim Hall.

My brother was accepted into Whim Hall after a distressing and extended stay in hospital while awaiting an acceptable care package.
My family and I reside overseas and we are my brother's only relatives. While he has excellent friends who have supported him with his dementia journey, Whim has been
his rescue. We visited during the month of November and whilst my brother had only been living there for 6 weeks, his friends noted a change in his well being. He is enjoying the engagement with staff members, he remarks on the food as being very good and plenty of it. He loves that his clothes return washed to him every day. Whilst he is unhappy with his medical condition he says he feels happy at Whim and feels he is being well cared for. On my visits to Whim I could witness some very lovely caring being offered to other residents. Aged care is not an easy job and in many ways under appreciated, I hope the staff at Whim know we fully appreciate their high level of professionalism.
Reply from Lorna Gordon, manager at Whim Hall Care CentreSo glad to hear that your brother has settled well into his life at Whim Hall and is enjoying the experience, which can be slightly overwhelming when new to a care environment. Hoping your visit has reassured you that the team and myself ensure best practice and well being are foremost for all our residents. Thank you for taking the time to write such a positive review.

My Aunt has been a resident at the Whim Hall since 2020 unfortunately she was put in there due to the covid pandemic as there was no other place due to the pandemic . Our family are open minded so we hoped that her stay would be comfortable and pleasant . As time went on we found this to be a totally
different senario although the staff then were able to supply entertainment and communication to the residents this changed over a peiod of time as staff left , after continuous visits we found residents being left in chairs with no one around , lack of staff to answer the door and a couldnt care attitude when residents became upset . The lack of one to one support is non existant and we witnessed a resident leaving through a alarmed door onto a snow laden staircase and it took 20 mins for staff to become aware of this incident . The encouragement of keeping up fluids due to the heat in the place is sorely lacking and the staff try their best . The place should be closed.

The staff are brilliant at dealing with her being able to calm her and restore her to normality.

Mum is really happy in this care home. Staff are very good with the residents and friendly to visitors. The room and common areas all smell clean and fresh, mum's personal care is good and mum enjoys the food provided. We checked out care homes in our area before placing mum here, and we're happy that
we have made the right choice and that mum is being well cared for.

My mother-in-law has been in Whim Hall for 2 years now and the treatment she receives is excellent. The staff are all very caring, patient and professional. They quickly deal with any queries I have. Her care is fantastic, I would recommend this care home to anyone who requires care for their loved
one.
They have a great partnership with the GP's and treatment has been quick when GP has been needed.
A fabulous team - keep up the excellent care.

My mum has been a resident in Whim Hall since January 2023. I am pleased to say the standard of care my mum has received is excellent. The staff, including the manager, go above and beyond what's expected of them. I have personally experienced this. I got married last year and the manager assisted my
mum to my wedding on her day off.

The atmosphere in the home is always positive, happy and supportive. My mother likes the activities, particularly the parties! Whenever I see my mother she reports that she is happy and enjoying herself, and I enjoy my visits. I always leave with a smile on my face. The staff are obviously motivated
to maintain the positive and supportive environment and work hard at doing so.

I’m ashamed that Whim Hall is still receiving more people to live there. It lacks direction from the management, the knowledge to simply care for a person with dignity and compassion. My father-in-law was stripped of his dignity and the will to live. We had no choice but to removed him from there,
but sadly he has died since. Whim Hall is a disgrace.
Reply from Stephanie Brookes-Kent, Recruiter Manager at Whim Hall Care CentreWe are sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with the care that we provided and the loss of your loved one.
We understand the importance of dignity and respect in caring for our residents, and we take any concerns regarding this matter very seriously. We always investigate any shortcomings in our service, and welcome the Care Inspectorate into our home to ensure that we are always meeting their guidelines. Further to this, we carry out extensive internal auditing to ensure that we are maintaining our standards at all times. All of our staff in our homes receive training in how to treat and care for our residents during their stay with us.
We will take on board your feedback and are actively examining our training and values to reinforce the significance of dignified care and to prevent similar experiences in the future.
If you would like to reach out and contact me, Tracy Atkins, Chief Operating Officer, directly to discuss this in further detail, please contact our head office.

I don’t know where to begin, Whim Hall has been and was my uncle's home for the last months of his life, his intentions were always to go home as he was only a resident awaiting a package of care. The staff went the extra mile for him and also myself on a number of occasions. My uncle shall we say was
a character and was set in his ways, he was immaculate on every occasion I visited and I add my visits were never booked so no prep was ever done for me coming, his room was always immaculate. I want to say a huge thanks to two ladies in particular, the compassion you showed I will never forget.

Very happy to see our Dad is being well looked after at Whim Hall. The care home is well-maintained, clean and tidy and the team are friendly and caring.
The manager and her great team are always available to speak to us about our Dad and they take a genuine interest in his wellbeing.
Our Dad has
come on leaps and bounds since taking up residence at Whim Hall and has started eating well again, as well as taking regular exercise.
As such he appears much happier and more like his old self. We are very pleased with the move.

I had the most wonderful Christmas ever in my lifetime. We were made to feel special individually. I enjoyed my Christmas dinner, we were given too much to eat. The entertainment was first class, including a visit from Father Christmas and our families were invited too. The care and attention are first
class, nothing is too much trouble. I feel truly blessed to have been given a place here to end my life.

We were anxious about my mum having to move to a care home due to no care being available. Our worries have been alleviated at Whim Hall Care Centre. My mum (and our whole family) have been welcomed warmly by all staff at the Care Centre. We are always included in social events here and can visit at
times that suit us. My mum eats well here and is well cared for. She enjoys group/craft activities and regular entertainment. Whim Hall is a home away from home. My mum's room is comfortable and peaceful.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.609)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.609) out of 10 for Whim Hall Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.050 for Whim Hall Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (77 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (22 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 120 Ratings = 4.05
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.559 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Whim Hall Care Centre is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.65
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 44 registered maximum number of service users is 8.8. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.8 = 0.909
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
