The home needs more carers in the lounge and generally. At nearly 3pm an old man still had his dirty bib on his glasses had fallen in his pudding bowl. Another man was shouting terribly loudly and someone called out "shut up". Two women got into a fight throwing cushions. Finally, a carer came and
sent one to their bedroom but the other carers were all busy in the room. I hate leaving my old friend in that environment. Another day earlier in the month, some carers were having a break and a nurse spotted an old man carrying excrement with his nappy down and she was dealing out the drugs so poor soul had to run and lock up her trolley and quickly take the poor chap away.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My mum is a resident in Memory Lane, Barchester Kirkburn Court. I visit my mum as often as I can and sometimes this is in the afternoon, later in the evenings or quite early in the morning. Recently when I went to visit my mum it was quite late on in the evening. She was not in the lounge or wandering
about and when I went into her room, I heard voices from the toilet. I remained very quiet and did not call out. I sat on the bed and listened to the conversation between the carer and my mum. I must say my heart filled as I heard the carer talk to my mum whilst helping her, calling her "sweetheart" and being very patient and kind. If I had any doubts about my mum's care (which I didn't and don't have) these would have vanished on the spot. It is so comforting to know that my mum is looked after in such a loving and caring way. One evening recently I popped in around 7pm. A good few of the residents were in the dining area with song sheets and two of the carers were singing away encouraging the residents to join in. Everyone singing and having a great time. I had a few tears as a few of the songs were songs that my mum and dad used to sing. We all has a laugh about that. It was great. The staff at Barchester Kirkburn Court are amazing and it is such a comfort knowing that my mum is so well looked after and loved in Memory Lane. It has taken such a worry off my shoulders. I know that although he was heartbroken at mum having to go into care, my dad was so glad that she would be looked after properly and told me before he died that he could go in peace knowing mum was looked after. All the staff are lovely, kind and caring and I have recommended Barchester Kirkburn Court to many people. Prior to my mum moving into Kirkburn Court I visited all the care homes in the area to check them out and I can honestly say Barchester Kirkburn Court were the only home that allowed me full access when I just "popped in." I didn't have to make any appointments and was allowed to look around whenever and wherever I wanted. I know I can honestly and truly say that I made the right choice in arranging for my mum to be in the care of Barchester Kirkburn Court and I will be forever grateful for them making my mum feel safe, secure and loved.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.948) out of 10 for Barchester Kirkburn Court Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.973 for Barchester Kirkburn Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (220 Excellents x 5) + (4 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 225 Ratings = 4.973
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Kirkburn Court Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2015

Hi, my name is David, and I am the General Manager here at Kirkburn Court.

I have worked in the Care Sector for the past 30 years, in a varied range of positions. I started as a Care Assistant in 1986 and have been involved in the management of care home services for the past 9 years. I joined Barchester Healthcare, here at Kirkburn Court, in June 2015 and the warm welcome from the residents, their families and staff have helped me settle very well into life here as General Manager. I enjoy ensuring that residents and staff are well supported within the daily life of the home.
