On the outskirts of Edinburgh in Penicuik, Aaron House is a lovely historic building comprising of the old mansion house and 2 newer wings. The care home is operated by Aurem care. The care home offers care and support to older people with nursing and care needs for up to 66 individuals and is one of the most highly thought of care facilities in the area.

The service is managed over 3 areas, Cowan, Errington and Beeslack, these areas are all different and are designed to create a homely feeling. There is a well established team, some have worked in Aaron House for many years and have a great passion to provide a truly person centred service to the people that live there.

It is a large home however it remains homely and cosy with many personal touches to make it a home not a service.

Aaron house is surrounded by extensive grounds and has an enclosed safe garden for people to use as they wish.

My Mother in law has been a resident in Aaron house for almost 4 years. and I can honestly say the care, support and kindness my mother in law has been shown in that time has been amazing, she is happy, settled and her personal hygiene is always looked after. The staff are friendly and informative and
we feel relaxed knowing our lovely mum is in the best possible environment for her needs.
keep up the amazing work you do.

Aaran house care home is wonderful. My mum was a resident there for 3 years until she passed in October 2025. The care mum received was 2nd to none. From the care support to cleaners everyone went above and beyond to make sure residents were happy and safe.

My father moved into Aaron House in December. Every single member of staff is happy, kind, compassionate, thoughtful, caring and supportive and of course professional. They know what my dad's needs are and absolutely nothing is a bother to anyone. I feel so much better knowing that he is being cared
for by such an incredible team.

My dad has received excellent care at Aaron House. The culture is one of respect and kindness from all staff including admin, ancilliary and activity coordinators, as well as the care and nursing staff. As a family, we are also respected and provided with care and good communication. I couldn't fault
Aaron House in any way.

Dad has been here for almost a year now and is happy living in Aaron House. As a family, we are happy with the care he is getting and it is clear that everyone does their best for the residents. It is fantastic to see the range of activities that are organised for the residents. Dad particularly enjoys
the many musical events. We could not have picked a better care home.

The amazing staff make this home five-star. The care and compassion they have for the residents is second to none. All staff from the careers/nurses/seniors to the auxiliary staff and the activities play a part and they work as a team to provide the best of care. This care home has a very open and honest
attitude and shares everything with the relatives. The management team are a big part of the home and is always available and involved in all aspects of the resident's care and as a result, are proactive in finding solutions and ways to help with the ever-changing needs of the resident. The home is full of noise as the activities team is always trying to find new ways of entertaining the residents and keeping them alert and engaged. The whole home is always clean and fresh. I will always be thankful to all the staff for the love and care they have shown my mum over the last nearly three years and will be forever grateful we were able to get a place here.
Reply from Stephen Van Putten, General Manager at Aaron HouseThank you for this very positive review, we are all very passionate about our service, taking care of everyone and making their day is our aim. I will share your review with the team, they will be very pleased to hear this feedback. If there is anything further we can do please just ask. Thank you, from the Aaron House Team.

My husband has been in care now for seven months, and he seems to be happy. The carers are polite and friendly with both myself and him. Even when my husband was unwell, it was dealt with quickly. I was informed, and I was confident he was being cared for. The only thing that irritates me is things
go missing; they usually turn up, sometimes weeks later.
Reply from Stephen Putten, Manager at Aaron HouseThank you for this kind review; we are delighted to hear your husband is happy with us. Regarding missing items, we will do what we can to reduce any distress this causes. Communal living can be difficult with others going in and out of rooms. On the whole, the care home is good. Unfortunately, the weekend care is quite poor. Having to ring the doorbell at least 4 times in the wind and rain is not a lot of fun.
Also, I think the house thinks it's for relatives visiting but a great number do not have visitors. Long days for some. Decorating
the home has greatly improved it. Rooms may need looking at soon.
Reply from Stephen Putten, Manager at Aaron HouseThank you for the review. Our care service is 24 hours care 7 days a week, we have the same team on over the week as weekends, therefore the care should always be to the best possible standards. We do have limited need for reception team at weekends and at times there is a delay in answering the door as the care team are providing interactions with the people we support. I will discuss this fully with the team and ensure care is always as we expect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and that doors are answered without delay. I am glad to hear the internal decoration is making a positive impact, bedrooms are changed as needed and when vacant to ensure minimal disruption to the people we support, we will continue to review and make more positive changes. Thank you again for your feedback.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.780)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.780) out of 10 for Aaron House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.830 for Aaron House is calculated as follows: ( (180 Excellents x 5) + (28 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 212 Ratings = 4.83
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.95 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Aaron House is based on 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.95
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 66 registered maximum number of service users is 13.2, which has been reached with 18 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
