On the outskirts of Edinburgh in Penicuik, Aaron House is a lovely historic building comprising of the old mansion house and 2 newer wings. The care home is operated by Aurem care. The care home offers care and support to older people with nursing and care needs for up to 66 individuals and is one of the most highly thought of care facilities in the area.

The service is managed over 3 areas, Cowan, Errington and Beeslack, these areas are all different and are designed to create a homely feeling. There is a well established team, some have worked in Aaron House for many years and have a great passion to provide a truly person centred service to the people that live there.

It is a large home however it remains homely and cosy with many personal touches to make it a home not a service.

Aaron house is surrounded by extensive grounds and has an enclosed safe garden for people to use as they wish.

My mum has been a resident since early last year and the care she has received has been wonderful. Staff are always friendly and compassionate and nothing is too much bother. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they kept the residents safe and happy and kept in touch with relatives by phone, WhatsApp video
calls and Facebook posts of events taking place. When speaking to Mum, she says everyone is kind and she is well looked after. I am delighted I chose Aaron House for Mum and would recommended this care home 100%.
Reply from Phillip Smith, Managing Director at Aaron HouseMany thanks for your lovely feedback. We are delighted that Mum has settled and feels well looked after. Thank you again.

Choosing a care home is too important to be left to chance - in my opinion, all facilities in a particular area should be visited if possible, ideally with other family members or friends for individual opinions. In my case 20 care homes were visited. A shortlist was chosen - then ultimately Aaron
House. It has three wings, expansion bringing extra purpose-built space and light. Being part of a care home group Aaron House can offer shared services - for example, daily and monthly publications delivering attractions helpful for activities coordinators. Management/relatives discussion come monthly, with reasonable and sensible suggestions from all acted upon quickly, in my experience. Staff, I have learned, generally have long service at Aaron House. This suggests to me satisfaction and close ties, both for residents and staff. This care home ticks the boxes for standards generally expected of all well-managed homes; with staff, cleanliness and activities particularly outstanding. Aaron House has generous gardens with patios serving each wing, a boon in summer months when day trips to beaches and parks in The Lothians are also organised.
Reply from Phillip Smith, Managing Director at Aaron HouseThank you for your very comprehensive feedback. We are delighted that Aaron House has met your expectations and thank you again for your recommendation.

All of the carers work hard and are good with residents. They could do with being in the same section at all times, instead of being moved to different departments as the resident gets used to the same ones and that helps them, especially when they need their care and they get to trust them too.
Reply from Phillip Smith, Managing Director at Aaron HouseThank you for your review and kind comments relating to the care team. With regard to the lower scoring sections of the review, we will endeavour to focus on these areas. Thank you again.

Carers are amazing, can't do enough for service users and their families.
Staff nurses will take as much time as needed with families and the service users.
They need to keep staff in the same unit to help dementia users to have as much repetition as possible. All staff are very helpful.

A welcoming place to visit my mum. The staff know her really well now and this gives me great comfort. From the manager down to the cleaners they are all friendly and approachable. Current activities coordinator really interacts with the residents. A good atmosphere too.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.829)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.829) out of 10 for Aaron House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.829 for Aaron House is calculated as follows: ( (197 Excellents x 5) + (34 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 234 Ratings = 4.829
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Aaron House is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 66 registered maximum number of service users is 13.2, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
