Colinton Care Home

I am full of praise for Colinton Care Home. My mother, who died in March was a resident there for nearly three years. When she moved into the home with Alzheimer’s she was anxious and withdrawn with no interest in food but over time she gained weight and became calm and relaxed. Unprompted she would repeatedly tell me that she could not be better looked after. The home is a pleasant, clean, welcoming and positive environment and the gardens are beautiful. This all meant that I felt cared for too and went home knowing that my mother was safe. There are plenty of group activities but allowances are made for those like my mother who preferred her privacy. As a relative I was kept fully up to date with any developments in the management of the home or changes in my mother’s condition or care. The respectful care she received in the last few weeks of life was excellent and a great comfort to me. This is a happy home that deserves to be recognised for its efforts and high standards.

I cannot speak highly enough of the management of Colinton Care Home through these extraordinarily difficult months. That they have remained free of Covid for so long speaks volumes and the way they are now managing the cases that have occurred shows resilience, creativity and concern for the interests of all. The staff I meet are always very helpful and friendly and the home is immaculate. There is never any sense of the strain they are under, just business as usual with activities and celebrations of birthdays and plans for trips continuing as before. My friend is lucky to be there.

Once confined to bed, my friend was very well nursed, with real love; she never had any bedsores, and when she required to be fed this was done with patience, kindness and even some laughter!

If you are looking for a care home that provides the highest standard of individual care, respect, choice and empathy for your relative this is the best. My aunt was looked after so well as her illness caused her health to deteriorate. The manager, assistant manager and Colinton Care Home team were fantastic, keeping me up-to-date with her health and general wellbeing and always a warm welcome when I visited. Throughout the Covid pandemic, the care home has managed to continue to provide a wide choice of activities for the residents, while keeping them safe. Photos were taken of residents enjoying different activities indoors and, weather permitting, in the large, beautiful gardens. All areas of health are promoted by staff and her choice was always respected. In my aunt's last days her favourite music was playing quietly in the background and she was pain-free. The level of care and kindness shown to my aunt and those present will never be forgotten.

Thank you to Mum's nurse, the senior care assistant, the deputy and head of nursing and the manager and the Topaz team as a whole. You guys are amazing.

I spent a lot of time researching for a place to suit my mother who has Alzheimer's. Colinton Care Home has certainly lived up to all the positive reports. The staff are so friendly, kind and caring and I can't thank them enough for all their support.

Colinton Care Home is an excellent home - well run and where every member of staff is so caring. I was apprehensive when my husband first went in over 2 years ago, but needn't have worried. He bonded with staff immediately and it was obvious they were very fond of him. The manager steered the home through the difficult COVID times, keeping the home safe but ensuring that relatives were kept in touch by video chats, telephone or visits within the guidelines. I really don't think I could have found a better home.

The change in my dad has been amazing since he started his stay at Colinton Care Home. He's made friends and he loves the food. The staff have been fantastic to my dad from minute one, and have kept Mum and I informed of Dad's progress. You get a feel for a place and its people and Colinton feels good.

My dad needed time in Colinton Care Home while recovering from illness. He received excellent nursing care and left after four weeks in much better shape than when he went in. A month is not long enough for a resident to really settle but he certainly felt at home and established good relationships with many of the staff. From what I saw of the premises it was very bright, clean and welcoming. All the staff I came into contact with were very friendly and helpful, particularly the manager and deputy and head of nursing. Due to the quarantine period, Dad wasn't able to see much more than his room and wasn't keen to venture out but he was well attended and the staff very responsive. He particularly enjoyed the food.

Due to Covid restrictions, this was not a normal stay but from what I saw I was very happy with Colinton and am hoping my dad will return there as a permanent resident when the time comes.

What an amazing care home! I feel like we really have hit the jackpot here. Initially, I admitted my friend to another care home but within 6 weeks I could see that he was losing weight and although very confused, he was crying and telling me that he was miserable. Immediately I made plans to move him and came across Colinton Care Home. From the very first conversation with the home, they were absolutely amazing. We had been in such a stressful situation and they stepped in and made the move over so easy and pleasant. What a difference I can see in my friend now. He is clearly very well cared for, mentally and physically. He’s looking so much happier and is joining in with activities. The gardens are amazing. He loves watching the squirrels running up and down the trees. Every member of staff has been helpful, friendly, professional and has gone the extra mile to keep us in touch by Facetime, phone and Facebook. I feel 100% secure that he is happy and well cared for. It is a real from home.

I have no hesitation in recommending Colinton Nursing Home!

My friend has been in the care home for 6 years now and is very happy and well looked after. The staff are first class, very professional, approachable and keen to help with any issue. There is a very homely atmosphere in the home which makes my visits both relaxed and enjoyable. The hygiene is excellent and my friend receives the best of care in her lovely clean and bright room.

I cannot praise all the management and staff highly enough.

I am very happy with the care and attention that my mum receives at the Colinton Home. All the staff try very hard to ensure that she has everything she needs and find time to talk to her and involve in events. All staff are very friendly and helpful and are quick to contact me if needed. Mum likes to go to the activities that take place and particularly enjoys the lovely garden on sunny days. She is very happy with her room and the facilities and I think the cleaning and hygiene standards are high, particularly now. Prior to Covid-19, I was able to visit my mum three times each week but the home quite correctly made the decision very early to stop all relatives' visits to the home in order to protect it's residents from the virus. The management team and staff have made fantastic efforts in these difficult times to keep the home safe. I am able to speak to my mum regularly and to see pictures of events on the home's Facebook page. The Colinton team are doing a great job.

My sister and I are many miles away from Colinton and so it is particularly important that we feel that we can trust the staff to be aware of changes in my Aunt's condition and take appropriate action as well as report them to us accurately and promptly. I have regular chats with my Aunt's care worker who clearly knows her well and puts a huge effort into making sure her health and well being as attended to.

There are not enough words to describe how amazing the staff are coping with this very difficult situation, showing amazing love and compassion for our loved ones and putting their care before their own.

We have come to expect a very high standard of care and concern for the residents in the Colinton Care Home but we feel the need to record how especially well the staff have responded to the Coronavirus pandemic. They have done an extraordinarily good job in keeping relatives informed of how things are going and they need to be congratulated in bucking the trend in care homes in Scotland by keeping the virus at bay. Posting updates of activities on the social media web page has meant that we have been able to see our relatives engaging with and enjoying a wide range of activities. The creativity shown by the staff in inventing new sports has been amazing and has compensated greatly for the loss of outings which has been imposed by the virus. Keep up the good work! The relevance and regularity of updates has been hugely reassuring.

During the Coronavirus situation we are so grateful to all the staff who have dealt so amazingly to keep the residents and each other safe at this difficult time.
