My mother was here for respite for 18 days. Off the 18 days she was confined to her room for 10 days and was not allowed visitors as there was an outbreak of Norovirus. She has dementia and was moved to the secure unit several times to sit in their day room as she kept trying to leave via the fire
escape. The staff complained to me on the phone that this was very inconvenient as they were busy and they had to run down the drive to catch her. There was also one occasion when the staff would not let her come to the phone because of the norovirus. They told me there was no movement between the floors for staff to contain the outbreak yet it was okay for them to move my Mum. When we were shown around there was no mention of a secure unit or the fact my Mum might be placed there. Arts and crafts class consisted of a photocopy of a colouring in book of pictures of animals. My Mum got a picture of koalas to colour in. It was a disappointing experience for my Mum and for the family and has made us reluctant to seek further residential care. We had hoped that this would be a good experience for us all and to meet the future needs for my Mum.
