My mum came to Abercorn less than a week ago. My experience so far has been very reassuring and positive for my family.

My mum has been a resident since March 2026. The transiton has been a very positive experience for her. The staff have been very supportive in encouraging my mum to participate in activities and outings. This has been wonderful to see mums joy at taking part, staff are very friendly towards the family members visiting. They are approachable when we raise our concerns and do their best to address situations,

Overall Experience

The family carefully reviewed a number of care homes, both from personal recommendations, of which we had a few from Abercorn House. We visited the homes and checked the Care Commission reviews, and concluded that this would be the best place for my mum. This was only 7 weeks ago. Since then, we have not been disappointed. The staff and what they provide are excellent. We have seen a massive improvement in my mum's overall health and, more importantly, her attitude to life. I am so pleased we made this hard decision to place my mum in this care home. It was undoubtedly the correct decision.

Reply from Jacob Hardie, Reviews team at Abercorn House Care Home

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful review. We understand how significant this decision is, so it is wonderful to hear that your experience has been so positive. It's especially encouraging to know your mum's health and outlook have improved in such a short time, and that our team has made a meaningful difference. My sister went into Abercorn House in January 2026 after being in hospital for 9 weeks, as a family we were all worried about how she would be, but she has settled really well due to the staff as they could not have been nicer, everyone made her feel very welcome and are so helpful with us when we have any questions. It means so much to us that she is happy and that she is doing more and joining in as much as she can. Definitely the best place we could have chosen.

Overall Experience
My Dad has been a resident at Abercorn for several months now. I live in England so have only been able to visit a few times, however my Mum visits daily. I know Rowena (the manager) from old, and I am not just saying this - she is such a genuine and caring nurse - she always wants rhe best for her staff and most importantly her residents.
My Dad's room is small, however he has enough space to live comfortably. The staff are very attentive, and I cannot fault Rowell or Von for the activities - my Dad (and Mum) loves a lunch out!
He was admitted to Abercorn with a pressure injury to his bottom and his heel, which have now healed thanks to Rowena and her Team!
I am looking forward to Visiting Dad in December and going out for some lunch with him and Mum!

Thank you Rowena and your team in Strathmore unit.

Review from Catherine T (Wife of Resident) published on 24 July 2025 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

The care given by the staff is exemplary. One occasion recently, however, I believe merited further comment. A relatively new carer was attending to a resident who had fallen. The carer was on her own in the lounge at the time. As I approached, I saw the carer realise my husband was trying to stand up (he is a falls risk). She took the decisive action to rush to my husband's aid. When I thanked her, her response was "the one who had fallen was safe on the floor and so I needed to attend to the other" In my opinion, she showed excellent awareness and decision making, and she is a welcome addition to an already good team.

Reply from Jacob Hardie, Design and Marketing Assistant at Abercorn House Care Home

Thank you for your kind words and for highlighting this moment. We're so pleased to hear about the carer's quick thinking and sound judgment its exactly the kind of care we aim to provide. We'll make sure your praise is shared with her and the team. Your feedback means a lot to us.

Very happy with the level of service. The office staff were extremely helpful during the initial setup for my parent. The nursing staff have been outstanding in caring for my mum. Regular updates on caring needs via phone calls by the nursing team are very reassuring.

My sister moved into Abercorn House on the 26th of November 2024. she had spent 15 weeks in hospital, not allowed out of bed. The staff now walk her with help to the toilet, dining room, she sits in the dining room and feeds herself. She has been to the pantomime, has been shopping. I am allowed to take her to church and to her hairdresser. It is the best she has been for years.

Putting my husband into care because of advanced dementia was a very traumatic time for our family and me. My only contact with residential care was many years ago, visiting an elderly neighbour in a home. However, my fears were groundless. From the beginning, he was treated with kindness, dignity, patience and good humour. The staff are always pleasant and helpful. They do a job which I could never do. Abercorn House is clean, very warm and comfortable and the food looks appetising and nutritious. Dementia is a terrible affliction, however, I know that my husband is getting the best of care.

Overall Experience
I was my friend's primary carer for decades. She has a progressive neurological condition and unfortunately, it became very difficult to care for her at home. This was compounded by a dire lack of community care and myself becoming ill. However, after a month in temporary care, she was accepted and transferred to her permanent placement in Abercorn House. She receives high-quality care and prompt medical attention as required. The manager, assistant manager and all staff present as being kind and approachable.

The care home has a very pleasant atmosphere. My experience with staff has been extremely positive. They present as being friendly, helpful and competent. I would have no hesitation in recommending Abercorn House to others.

My aunt went straight from the hospital to Abercorn House Care Home and was very well looked after from the start she has settled in very well and enjoys going on outings as she wasn't able to do this at home. I live down south and I phone every 2 days to talk to my aunt and have never had any issues. The staff are lovely and friendly and my aunt likes to have a laugh with them.
