Sadly our aunt passed away on the 7th of November. We (my husband and I) could not have asked for anymore, care, love, experience and attention the staff and management gave to our aunt in the last two weeks of her life. Our aunt had been in Springhill for 2 and a half years, where she danced, sang,
played games, done art, overall she was happier than she had been for years.
Reply from Michelle Hutchison, Care Home Manager at Springhill Nursing HomeIt was out pleasure to have your aunt with us, a true character that had the most infectious laugh and like a joke or two, the team miss her dearly. The Springhill Team

Springhill Care Home is a lovely place (mum's words). It's quiet and peaceful, clean tidy warm rooms with ensuite facilities, many lovely kind considerate day and night carers, nursing staff are very approachable, kind, caring and considerate, taking the individual needs of their residents seriously
and acting with confidence to help at all times. Mum prefers her own company but there are days out and daily activities for all residents. Hairdresser available too, kitchen staff are happy to help too, food mostly homemade.

On the whole the nursing home is good and take care of Mary and keep her safe, well looked after. Occasionally communication isn't great. We ask for things like Mary's nails to be cleaned and cut and it doesn't happen. This may not seem like a big thing but it is to us, her family. The staff are all
lovely and obviously very fond of her which gives us peace of mind but there is a lack of staff we feel for the unit she is in.
Reply from Michelle Hutchison, Care Home Manager at Springhill Nursing HomeThank you for your review, at Springhill we strive to do the very best for our residents and myself or the clinical manager can always be contacted should you feel you have requested something and this is not being done, we can be contacted face to face, via email or telephone so please contact us to allow a speedy resolve, on the matter of staffing i am happy to meet with you for a face to face to discuss. Generally happy with the care that my Grandpa is receiving. Staff are attentive and always friendly. We often bring the dog along and everyone is always happy to say hello! We visited on christmas day and the staff set up a lovely room for us to eat in, and the food was great too!

The entertainment co-ordinator was really helpful. The home was very clean and welcoming. I felt they spent time pre stay asking parents likes and dislikes and then gave her tea with milk as a standard cuppa and not what she likes (early grey no milk). I do not feel they managed her diabetes well she
had several hypos with blood sugars at 2 despite using a libra and alarm system.
Reply from Michelle Hutchison, Care Home Manager at Springhill Nursing HomeThank you for your kinds words in relation to our activities co-ordinator he is indeed very helpful and always delivers excellent entertainment and engagement, without full input from the clinical team i am unable to respond to your concern regarding the diabetes, i am happy to discuss this fully with you privately and answer any questions. Springhill staff were excellent in the way they cared for my mother, as she can be quite difficult sometimes.
From the minute she arrived she was very well attended to by the staff who all made an effort to get to know her and find out her needs/ requirements. Overall staff were very friendly, professional
and caring. My mother was only in for a short respite period but would have no hesitation in making her stay permanent if that was required.

My friend's mother has settled in well since joining the Springhill family. She is happy, comfortable, and well-cared for and likes to join in with the entertainment and all activities. This gives my friend peace of mind knowing that she is safe, well looked after and treated with dignity and respect.

My mum has settled well and regularly attends art/craft group which she tells me she likes. She loves to participate in the entertainment singing and dancing and go out in the mini bus on day trips. This is great as I don't drive and would have been unable to take her on trips further afield. The staff
are always kind & considerate to mum and always make us feel welcome and included when we visit. I'm so glad mum has joined the Springhill family. Mum has had a new lease of life and is happy to be part of the Springhill family. This gives me peace of mind knowing she is safe and well looked after. Any concerns regarding mum are dealt with quickly and we are always kept up to date with information that concerns mum.

Carers and nursing staff very good and listen to any comment about my mother I make. Wide range of entertainment provided and excellent activity coordinators, manger very proactive in sorting any issues. My concern is that on occasions there does seem to be many carers on floor. Mum's unit recently
done up which has made difference to lounge/dining area. Disappointed that decor in Mum's room only painted walls. Carpet a bit grubby and fabric chair that smells a bit, not ideal. Admin staff pleasant and helpful though billing a problem at times.
Reply from Michelle Hutchison, Care Home Manager at Springhill Nursing HomeMany thanks for your kind words regarding the team we are delighted that you feel listened to and all issues are dealt with. The unit that your mum lives on did undergo an extensive refurb with all rooms painted including corridor and the communal area undergoing a full refurb. As always i listened and the chair has been replaced. We are currently undergoing further upgrades to the home and the note on the carpet has been taken on board. Once again many thanks for your kind comments the staff and myself are delighted. Michelle

The frontline care workers who deal with Mum are wonderful; she is comfortable and happy with them all and that is the most important aspect of any care home - the care. So, 5 stars for the staff.
I didn't give full marks for cleanliness because her room often has the same debris on the floor for several
days on end but her own cleanliness and that of her carers is meticulously seen to.
I would have given the full 5 stars for 'Dignity' if she always received back her own laundry and her room was tidied up a bit more regularly.
3 stars only for food and drink, on the day of writing, she received no breakfast and when a cup of tea finally arrived, it had sugar in it and she has often told the folk who serve her that she doesn't take sugar! These little incidents are not uncommon.
The management has been poor, but I believe new management is in place, so I will make no further comment at present to give them a chance. I hope communications will improve.
Thank you.
Reply from Michelle Hutchison, Care Home Manager at Springhill Nursing HomeDear David, many thanks for your honest review, as part of the new management team we are striving towards excellent care and the best way for this to happen is for honest and open communication between families, residents and staff. I must thank you for your kind words as well and these are greatly appreciated by the care team who are as you quite rightly label as "wonderful" and as their line manager, I could not agree more. Please always feel free to approach me or my deputy with any concerns and we will endeavour to correct any problems.

The nursing and care workers are excellent and very friendly. Entertainment is good. The home decor is a bit tired, it could do with an upgrade. I can't comment on the meals as I have not been when they are served. Would I put a family member in here? Possibly.

My mother was a resident in Springhill for 11 months having recently passed away. The staff at the home are wonderful in their dedication to the level of care they provide. The manager and her team are an amazing group of people who made my mother's last months extremely comfortable and very safe. They
took the time to get to know her so that they could give her the very best of their care, and in my opinion, they gave the highest level of care and support possible not only to my mother but they extended their support to my husband and me during the difficult last few days of her life. Thank you is not enough for these dedicated professionals who care for their residents and go the extra mile to do all they can for them and their families. Thank you is just not enough, they will forever have my greatest respect and gratitude for all they did.

Some significant improvements to the service since the introduction of new management team. I really can’t fault the quality of care and the nursing and care staff which is exceptional. Recent changes to the catering team have shot up the approval ratings of the residents with quality and options being
first class. Still some improvements to come from the ancillary services like laundry and exercise, as well as decor and garden facilities, but there is progress.

My mother has been resident in Springhill for around eighteen months now, during which time my dad also passed away (whist also resident there). The ongoing care, friendliness of staff and overall attitude towards my mum is excellent. I was unwell for a period during September this year, resulting in
a hospital stay. During my convalescence period, I was able to fully concentrate on my own health in the knowledge that Mum was happy, safe and secure - what more could I ask for! Of course, like any residential home there are small areas that could do with improvement, but nothing in my opinion that impacts negatively on the day to day wellbeing of Mum's life. I am delighted that we were able to secure a place for Mum and Dad when they both needed to make the move, one of the hardest decisions in my life - but one I have not regretted.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.444)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.444) out of 10 for Springhill Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.519 for Springhill Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (129 Excellents x 5) + (68 Goods x 4) + (16 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 214 Ratings = 4.519
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Springhill Nursing Home is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 61 registered maximum number of service users is 12.2, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
