Abney Court was a real find for me, having to find a care home for my mother who was suffering from dementia. I looked around a number of homes but none matched the facilities of Abney Court. She became a resident in October 2015 and since then the care she has received has matched my expectations.

We found ourselves in the difficult situation of placing our mother, who has front temporal dementia into a care home. Fortunately in amongst all the horrors associated with care, we found Abney Court - thank god! A wonderful, fun and caring environment. Thank you on behalf of our mum xxx

Very welcoming environment for residents and visitors. Coffee shop concept really good. People want to come and visit. Rooms clean, extremely well appointed, very welcoming staff who learn all family names and visitors get a very warm welcome. Cannot fault the facilities but guests need encouragement to take part. Food of a high standard.

My aunt was one of the very first residents to stay here when it opened in 2015, so we have seen it grow and prosper into a wonderful, caring home. The staff are marvellous always have time to stop and have a conversation with you. I have had many laughs with them. They look after my aunt with such meticulous care and its the first care home that my aunt has not complained about- keep up the good work!! I myself have no complaints regarding all staff cleaners, handyman, carers, management, cooks, they are all AMAZING!!

I could not be happier with the care and attention shown to my Dad by everyone at Abney. They are compassionate, motivated, organised, skilled and full of fun. If I'd known that this was what care homes could be like I would have been a lot less nervous about embarking on my search for a new home for my Dad.

Abney Court provides it's residents with a warm, caring and safe environment. Nothing is too much trouble, whether it is catering for a family lunch in the private dining room or getting the family dog a drink of water.

My husband is receiving excellent care and because of this, is making a rapid post-operative recovery. I can't speak highly enough about the staff and their friendly support for all residents. Only one improvement - Sky!!

This care home is an exceptional example of individualised.personal and compassionate care. They have looked after my mum with such kindness and put so much thought into how to make her stay with them happy and stimulating, always thinking about her welfare. They have shown the same degree of concern to us as relatives and knowing mum has been so well cared for has helped the family deal with our difficult personal circumstances. The staff are warm, approachable and families are always welcome to be involved. A wonderful role model for the way care services should be run. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Abney Court is a lovely building in a lovely area. All the staff are very helpful and take pride in what they do and clearly enjoy their job. It's a very clean environment and the rooms are very spacious and well facilitated. Only negative thing I have to say is there could be more activities.

Overall I feel the care that my gran has received has been good. The care home is always very clean. The rooms are a good size. There have been some concerns with medication being given late, however things seem to have improved recently. Concerns regarding my gran have always been dealt with by the care home by asking a doctor to come and review. However we have not always been informed until after the fact. The staff are all very kind and caring and my gran seems to be happy in her new home.

My mum has dementia and has been living alone for the last 3 and a half years with a lot of help from myself and some carers/companions. I must say the transition here has been amazing. My mum seems very happy and entertained. She is always clean and tidy and suitably dressed. My mum has made some lovely friends here.

Staff are caring and conscientious and interact well with the residents. The facilities are very good and residents are encouraged to interact with each other and to participate in the organised activities. Apart from at meal times, families and friends can visit at any time and are made to feel welcome by all staff. feedback from staff can be conflicting at times. The care home is surrounded by extensive gardens that provide an excellent environment for residents in good weather.

I came to the home being referred from hospital for intermediate care after having fluid on the lungs. I felt very weak in hospital and unable to do things for myself. Having stayed with you for nearly three weeks. I felt almost completely recovered and able to cope again. Abney Court was an excellent half way house for me. The staff were all very kind and patient and cared for me well. I enjoyed socialising with other people. The coffee bar was an excellent facility for my visitors. I enjoyed my stay at Abney Court.

My father was apprehensive before his stay but really enjoyed it and will go again next time I go on holiday for respite care. He thinks that the staff were first class and he says that it was good in there! Gives us more options for the future.

My husband an Alzheimer sufferer spent three days of day care at Abney Court prior to a weeks stay for respite care. I was initially worried about how he would cope with a new environment and new staff. I need not have worried he thoroughly enjoyed his day care and it became clear immediately that he was relaxed and settled due to the standard of care and attention that he received. This continued throughout the period of respite care. Wen I visited it was comforting and re-assuring to see how relaxed and happy he was. There was much evidence that the staff and the facilities combine to produce a supportive and caring atmosphere. The staff were brilliant and it meant that I to could relax, safe in the knowledge that he was being very well cared for at all times. Thank You

My 91 year old nanna who suffers from Alzheimer's came to Abney Court for respite care. Abney Court was just newly opened when we arrives. It has been beautifully decorated and is clean, bright and airy. The staff have been wonderful, especially the manager who has been there for us from the initial visit, making sure everything runs smoothly. My nana always has a carer with her and they always treat her with dignity and respect, seeming to go that extra mile to make sure she is happy. My nanna has been pampered in the hair salon, having her hair, nail and feet done, and has really enjoyed the range of activities provided for her. The only really downside is the cost compared to other care home which is ok for a little break, but I thing we would struggle permanently.

Meet the Team (1)

Julie McDowell
Julie McDowellJob Title:Home Manager

I began my career in care as a Care Assistant, and with support and encouragement from my managers, I’ve worked my way up to Team Leader, then Discharge Coordinator, then Deputy Manager and now Home Manager. I’m preparing to do my Level 5 qualification to further build on my skills.

I joined Care UK because of its strong reputation and the support and opportunities it offers for progression.

To do this role well, you need strong communication skills, the ability to see the bigger picture, and a calm, solution-focused mindset. The most important part of my role is overseeing all aspects of care and making sure every resident receives the highest standard of support.

A career highlight for me has been achieving my current position. The most rewarding part of my role is that I get to make a real difference to the lives of Abney Court residents every day.

Outside of work, I enjoy listening to music and spending time with my family and friends.
