Moving into a care home is a big change for anyone. From day one my mum was made to feel very welcome and team has been excellent ever since. They have taken time to get to know my mum. She is always treated with dignity and care.
The facilities and activities at the care home are excellent and the
team there make sure the residents know what is going on and have the option to join in.
The location is lovely and the grounds are well maintained.
Recently there was a special Mother's Day event to which family members were invited. It was a lovely afternoon and much thought and preparation had gone into the event.
I'm confident my mum is in safe hands, well looked after and has many activities available for her to enjoy

My mum has been a resident at Abney for a couple of years and overall I'm very pleased with her care there. The home environment is very pleasant and some recent decorative improvements have made it even better for the residents. The staff are good and try to make it a caring and warm place for all
the residents to live with dignity. There's a wide range of daily activities and mum really enjoys taking part in these. Food and drink are of a high standard and there's a nice dining area for people to spend time in. Overall I'd definitely recommend as somewhere you can feel confident your loved ones will be cared for when they can no longer live independently.

Last Sunday for Mother's Day Abney Court organised a really special afternoon tea. On an occasion which could have proven difficult it really was a lovely occasion. Real thought had gone into the arrangements, the set up was beautifully done, a lot of effort too had gone into catering for someone with
Coeliac, thank you! The staff member who had arranged everything is to be really commended for all her kindness, the chef too came out to speak to all the guests which was lovely.
All in all a very successful occasion.
With grateful thanks

Mum has happily settled into her new home thanks to the kindness, patience and support of all the staff at Abney Court. Mum enjoys the activities, particularly the exercise classes. The lifestyle team make sure mum knows what is happening and can get involved. Lisa from the team will take mum for a
walk when the weather is fine - she enjoys that. I visit regularly and always feel welcome. The staff on the Gladstone Suite know mum well and are very kind. Mum said to me the other day 'I'm so glad we found this place, its very good'/ I'm glad too, mum is so well cared for, and happy here.

I have been very impressed by all the staff, they seem to have a very happy environment, which to my mind can only enhance the quality of care given to the residents. I like also the many activities that are on offer to all the residents. I cannot really say anything else because I really, really rate

As Deputy Head of the local school in the area, we regularly come to visit the residents with a group of our children and work together on a variety of activities, including reading, making willow wreaths and decorating photo frames!
Our visits are fantastic experiences for all - the children and the
residents love working together and have a great time chatting about things as they complete the activities together.
The friendly staff welcome us every time and always put such effort into planning fun things for the residents to enjoy - we always leave them with smiles on their faces, and smiles are on our faces, too!
We can't wait for our next visit!

My Mum has been a resident at Abney Court for 16 months. It was a very difficult decision for her to move in at the time, but the care staff were so caring it made the transition easier than we thought. The activity circular was crucial for Mum as she is enthusiastic to be part of a community to continue
to learn new skills-Thai Chi, French and Yoga have been a huge hit! The Leadership Team is excellent, they are present and approachable, any issues (which are rare) are readily resolved.

The exact amount of medication was handed in on arrival. At the end of the stay unused medication was handed back showing that on a number of days the medication was not administered. Both eye drops and blood thinners. His left foot was very swollen and our attention on pick up was not drawn to this.

Thanks to Abney Court Care Home for allowing our family to host my dad's 93rd birthday party so he could spend it with his wife, a celebration that always took place when my mum was still living at home. The gathering was filled with love, laughter and cherished memories. It is the moments like these
that remind us of the warmth of family and the joy of being together. This makes such a difference to my mum and dad as she navigates her journey with dementia. The family are truly grateful for the support you show every day.

Most of the staff I talk to are very caring, and listen to what you say. They usually act on anything you are worried about re the resident. It is just a shame that when things go missing there is no way of tracing them.
We had to buy a new pair of glasses which are not cheap and continually have to
replace socks.
Otherwise I have no complaints.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Reviews Team at Abney CourtThanks so very much for your 5-star review of Abney Court and your positive feedback about the care team here. We were sad to learn that the glasses have been lost and we are making every effort to locate them. On the dementia floor personal items can often be picked up and moved by other residents, something we try very hard to keep an eye on. We ask that all personal items are labelled on admission and have introduced a new process in the laundry to reduce the risk of missing items.

My Dad went into the home after being in a hospital, after 3 weeks he was a permanent resident. He then spent over a week before he was sent back into hospital. He was discharged and was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. After a week he was at end of life.
The carers were amazing they looked after
him with love care and attention. My Dad had his favourite and they knew it, they made him smile every day till the end and kissed and gave him hugs. He was comfortable and happy till the end. They're all amazing.

I find the staff very helpful and professional. There are many activities and visiting entertainers. This all makes my partner as comfortable as she can be considering her condition. On-site car park occasionally quite full but nearby parking is available. The coffee lounge particularly good when visiting

Myself and my sister visited Abney Court around 12 times whilst our mother was in the home. We both found the staff to be very rude and not at all caring for our mother.
The carers on the other hand were very kind and considerate. It was the floor manager and floor manager's assistant and the entertainment
manager were very rude and really could not care less for our concerns. If you were sent to Abney Court from hospital, you were treated differently to the regular clients. We ended up hating the place at the end of Mother's stay there.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.560)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.560) out of 10 for Abney Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.635 for Abney Court is calculated as follows: ( (153 Excellents x 5) + (44 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 211 Ratings = 4.635
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abney Court is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I began my career in care as a Care Assistant, and with support and encouragement from my managers, I’ve worked my way up to Team Leader, then Discharge Coordinator, then Deputy Manager and now Home Manager. I’m preparing to do my Level 5 qualification to further build on my skills.

I joined Care UK because of its strong reputation and the support and opportunities it offers for progression.

To do this role well, you need strong communication skills, the ability to see the bigger picture, and a calm, solution-focused mindset. The most important part of my role is overseeing all aspects of care and making sure every resident receives the highest standard of support.

A career highlight for me has been achieving my current position. The most rewarding part of my role is that I get to make a real difference to the lives of Abney Court residents every day.

Outside of work, I enjoy listening to music and spending time with my family and friends.
