Abney Court have done a great job welcoming my uncle and getting him settled in when at the age of 96, and after several falls, he realised he could not live independently at home. The staff are extremely professional and have been very thorough in asking me about his background and medical history,
so they can get to know him. I am so relieved to have peace of mind that he is safe and well looked after.

My sister-in-law is completely isolated at Abney Court due to the fact that the mobile phone signal is non-existent there which means we cannot communicate. The home sits in a walled garden and is surrounded by trees but Care UK should be able to solve this constant problem. I have complained to Care
UK about this but no action is ever taken. I feel my sister-in-law's needs are not being met as she has barely any visitors due to no one being able to contact her to arrange them. She is unhappy and completely alone. I have had occasions when staff fail to pass messages to my sister-in-law which is unacceptable. This is no way to operate a care home as family ties are crucial to a resident's well-being. This home is failing my sister-in-law.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Abney CourtI’m sorry to hear you’re struggling to keep in contact with your sister-in-law. As Abney Court is set in a rural location, there are times when mobile phone signal isn’t strong and therefore we advise relatives to contact the suite directly via a landline. We acknowledge that keeping in regular communication with their relatives is of paramount importance for residents, and our team will support any resident who wishes to call relatives themselves. At Abney Court, we host regular relative meetings to involve relatives in their loved one’s care which helps us to actively understand any issues surrounding residents and their care needs

Auntie came to Abney Court in 2019. Wonderful, loving care throughout her stay with you. Everyone (housekeeping, caring, administration teams) wouldn't have taken better care of their own grandmother. Can't praise the staff highly enough.

My wife has been in Abney Court since Sept '21. She is looked after wonderfully. All staff including cleaning staff watch out for all the residents no matter how ill they are. I have said that if the fees were doubled I would not move my wife elsewhere.

When my mum was discharged from hospital and needed to go into a temporary care home for 9 weeks, we were fortunate enough for mum to be found a nursing place at Abney Court. We are extremely grateful for all the professional care that was provided for our Dear Mum during her stay and the wonderful
support that they gave to our family at a very difficult time.

My mum has been in the care home since July 2017, I feel she is well looked after. The staff, on the whole, are kind and empathetic but communication needs improving, in lockdown on multiple occasions I'll call to check on my mum and no one can give me the time for an update, so I have to wait hours
to be called back, this is hard when my mum is in late stages. My mum's room could do with a lick of paint overall the home is nice but more training and more quality staff would make it much better for residents and family members alike. For residents in late-stage Alzheimer's, there's no real possibility for activities, I've suggested previously hand massages and other tactile one on one would be of great benefit to residents in late stages.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Abney CourtThank you for taking the time to leave your feedback about the care team at Abney Court. As you can appreciate, the team have been working incredibly hard during the pandemic; our main priority has been to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents and facilitating the different approaches to visiting. We pride ourselves on the ongoing rigorous training our care team receives, which covers all elements of care, to ensure that we maintain our good CQC rating. Recently our lifestyle team has undergone a number of changes, following this our activity programme has been reviewed and we are pleased to advise that more one to one activities are now being provided.

My mother has been a resident in Abney Court Care Home for more than two years. She is settled and happy and the staff are very attentive. The food is excellent and the facilities are the best I have seen. The coffee bar area is an extra facility and is enjoyed by residents and visitors. The daily activities
are well organised and enjoyed by the residents. The individual bedrooms (all en-suite) provide the residents with their own space and a feeling of independence. The staff are well trained, managers are experienced and easily contactable. I would highly recommend Abney Court if you are looking for a care home for your loved one.

My mother suffers from dementia and was admitted at short notice during the lockdown. Sadly, I had to leave her at the door with her suitcase and hope that she would be cared for and settle in. Abney Court called me within 2 hours to let me know that she was settling in and was very comfortable, which
was reassuring. Mum thinks that she has been there all her life and is very happy and settled and I could not be happier with the care and communication that I have received. Everyone that I have spoken too or met from Abney Court has been fabulous and I cannot wait to actually go into the home to see my mum's room and have a 'proper' visit. Based on my experience I would not hesitate to recommend.

We had been caring for our father since his diagnosis. After my mother died, life just wasn't the same for him, his dementia advanced, and we tried to provide 24-hour care between the family, but eventually we had to concede; we simply did not have the expertise to care for him as he needed. We had
to accept the inevitable. I knew someone who had had a relative reside at Abney Court, and had been delighted. We made a visit; immediately, I felt cared for myself, I just knew everything was going to be alright, it has been better than that, the staff are so caring, my father relies on them and loves them. Lockdown has obviously made things difficult but Abney have done everything possible to keep us in touch, I have been confident throughout this Covid time that Dad is better than OK, he is happy, cared for, completely at home. I don't know what we would have done without them. Abney Court has been caring of the whole family throughout, we will never be able to thank them enough.

My father has advanced Alzheimer's disease and we had been caring for him at home until we had to accept that was no longer safe. He has lived at Abney Court since August 2019 and we are so pleased that we chose such a wonderful home for him. The facilities and range of activities are excellent and
the levels of comfort superb but it is the love and care that he receives from his carers which is such a comfort to us. They treat him with such kindness and respect. They keep him safe yet allow him freedom whilst preserving his dignity at all times. They have welcomed him and all of us so that we feel part of their family. Sadly, covid has restricted visits but staff have done all they can to keep us well informed and provide access through facetime, outdoor visits and visits through indoor 'pods.' Though these are difficult and frightening times we have felt completely confident that he is safe and happy at Abney Court.

My aunt has lived here for almost 3 years following a stroke that has severely affected her mobility. She is otherwise healthy and involved with the world. She has been well cared for in the main and I have been very impressed by the work of their activity organisers who have been so effective in overcoming
the boredom of being in a care home.
Unfortunately, this aspect of the homes care has been severely undermined by the Covid situation. I look forward to the reinstitution of the activities team as soon as possible.
On the positive side, the home has been very careful to protect its residents from Covid. They have suffered losses but are acting extremely responsibly. They have instituted an extremely safe visiting room allowing us to see and talk to our relatives without any possibility of passing on any infection. All in all, one of the better homes I think.

The nursing care is a lot to be desired. The food is OK. Small portions for my husband.
The bread is awful.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Abney CourtThank you for your review of Abney Court. We are delighted that you consider the facilities to be of good standard and that the rooms are excellent. Our new home manager has talked through the concerns you had about your husband’s care. Residents are most welcome to ask for extra helpings of food at any time and we have since purchased your husbands choice of bread. If you have any other questions, then please don’t hesitate to ask either a team leader or home manager so that we can ensure we understand your husband's personal preferences and deliver care that is bespoke to him.

As my wife's condition was progressively getting worse it was now virtually impossible to look after her at home. We (the family) felt that residential care was imperative. After visiting many homes that in our opinion did not match our requirement we found Abney Court. From the moment you arrived you
were aware of the relaxing atmosphere in tastefully designed communal areas and ensuite rooms. My wife soon settled in. From day one all the staff have been fantastic, endeavouring to meet your every request. Successful in virtually every case. As I am a daily visitor you can immediately see how hard all the staff in various different departments work together to maintain the incredibly high standards in care and compassion required at Abney court.

My family and I were delighted to find this 21st century Care Home for my 94-year-old dad when he was fast-tracked from hospital. What a breath of fresh air this place is. Dad now has a new lease on life. He was bedridden and on pureed food when he left hospital. He's now enjoying the delicious food
here cooked by an award-winning chef and thoroughly enjoys all the entertainment and the company of the staff. He tells us that they look after him really well. Living in Devon but visiting often, this really puts my mind at rest. Although my two sons and their wives visit as often as they can, they all work full time. They have also said that they know he is definitely in the right place and they can relax knowing that their grandad is in safe hands. I just wish there were more places like this for the elderly who are young at heart. Thanks guys.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.560)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.560) out of 10 for Abney Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.635 for Abney Court is calculated as follows: ( (153 Excellents x 5) + (44 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 211 Ratings = 4.635
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.925 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abney Court is based on 17 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.925
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 17 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I began my career in care as a Care Assistant, and with support and encouragement from my managers, I’ve worked my way up to Team Leader, then Discharge Coordinator, then Deputy Manager and now Home Manager. I’m preparing to do my Level 5 qualification to further build on my skills.

I joined Care UK because of its strong reputation and the support and opportunities it offers for progression.

To do this role well, you need strong communication skills, the ability to see the bigger picture, and a calm, solution-focused mindset. The most important part of my role is overseeing all aspects of care and making sure every resident receives the highest standard of support.

A career highlight for me has been achieving my current position. The most rewarding part of my role is that I get to make a real difference to the lives of Abney Court residents every day.

Outside of work, I enjoy listening to music and spending time with my family and friends.
