A Caring and compassionate home where staff do their best to accommodate any requests, especially making each room feel like home.
Totally respectful especially when our relative passed.
Although often very busy, when you needed support or information someone would come and find you quickly.

The team at Chaucer took great care of both my Uncle and Auntie at the end stage of their lives. Their rooms were next to each other, and the greatest of respect was paid when one died before the other and they were brought together to say their goodbyes. Knowing they were safe and in good hands gave
us much peace and reassurance. Thank you to all the team, we are very grateful.

My father was only at Chaucer House Care Home for a few weeks following the closure of his previous home. He was put on the nursing rooms as he was in the final stages of dementia. Their care for him was excellent. They kept me informed by phone throughout as I do not live locally. He was cared for
and I couldn't have asked for more.

Mum was admitted into care home following hospitalisation for broken hip she already suffered from dementia & I believe this fall & subsequent admission led to her deterioration. The staff were very kind & considerate to mum during her stay there apart from one incident that was dealt with rapidly &
proficiently.

My mum was moved into Chaucer House after 6 weeks in hosptial. Her dementia had deteriorated, and staff cared for her very well. I had made one complaint though when Mum had asked for to go to the toilet and I couldn't get staff to assist. My mum got very distressed when she soiled herself whilst eating
her dinner. I was very upset this happened, but my complaint was dealt with very swiftly, and apologies were made & said this would not happen again. Staff were at the time busy preparing lunches. Staff addressed me personally to apologise.

Overall the staff at the home are truly incredible and cannot do enough.
Sadly the management can make you feel uncomfortable by not speaking with you or interacting, particularly the home manager. Who this morning alone walks past and stares but doesn't say a word to me or my Mother as one of her
residents.
The operations manager is nice and will take time to meet with you to resolve concerns and support. The feedback isn't always great and the operations manager herself said six staff won't speak to you as they feel you can take their words wrong. This was on a period where I had to question some of the things happening within my mums care plan after two hospital admissions.
The care however is good overall and the general team are lovely, just a shame the manager doesn't make the effort to speak to residents as she walks past their rooms and their families.
Reply from Hannah De Mesa, Home Manager at Chaucer House Care HomeThank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Creating a respectful and supportive environment for all residents and their families is something I take very seriously. I value honest feedback, as it plays a vital role in helping us learn, grow, and continuously improve the care we provide at Chaucer House.I am committed to working closely with the wider team to ensure every interaction reflects the standard of compassion and attentiveness we strive for at all times. I am sorry if my approach on the day you mentioned made you feel in any way unsupported. I can assure you this was not intended.Should you wish to discuss anything further or feel that a follow-up conversation would be helpful, I would be more than happy to meet with you again.

Night team not as caring and considerate as it should be.
Do not get enough showers/baths.

Existing care staff are generally of a very good to outstanding manner. Agency staff with existing experience at Chaucer House try hard but do not always appear adequately briefed. It is a pity that a turnaround of carers occurs quite regularly as dementia patients in particular benefit from consistency.
Familiarity with staff and an awareness of residents needs and mood swings. Why no newsletters? The loss of the manager was a shame as she brought about change and consistency. A pity that for understandable reasons the replacement colleague has not assumed her role. Has the food quality changed? No trips or journeys for 18 months.

Finding a nursing home for Mum was never going to be easy. Chaucer House has done a sterling job of getting her settled in, they have listened to her and, after a nearly six-month period in hospitals, they are working hard to get her to relax and enjoy her new home. Things have improved and her concerns
are always addressed in full, making my life easier!

Myself and my husband visited Chaucer's House for the first time last week, we came to visit my sister who has recently become a resident.
I was anxious to see my sister in her new home and was delighted with the experience!
Upon entering, we immediately felt relaxed in the lovely surroundings. The
reception area is lovely, the high ceilings created a great sense of space and were very bright.
The manager, came to say hello and made us feel so welcome showed us around, and introduced us to the staff.
My sister has a beautiful room with plenty of space.. in fact everywhere was clean and spacious and I loved the interior furnishings.
We left the home feeling extremely confident and reassured that my sister was in safe hands and would be happy in her lovely new home.

At the end of two weeks, my sister was left with 9 additional pressure sores - verified by district nurses (she went in with two). Many times she was left without a visit for excessive hours according to their own record (2.5.24 she was left all day from 5.52h to 19.18h without a continence or personal
care visit). She was not kept hydrated and returned with a UTI.
She had no means of entertainment. Overall it was like solitary confinement with sensory deprivation for two weeks.
No notice was taken of her dietary requirements. Consequently, she went without sometimes.
On each of my four visits over two weeks, I found a different nurse. I found the nurses had not read the handover notes. When she left her controlled drugs were not returned but her other drugs were. This kind of laxity with drugs and medical care should be concerning. I have kept this factual. Overall this place is inadequate and offers a dangerously low level of care.
Reply from Sarah-Jane Clapson, Director of Care Operations at Chaucer House Care HomeThank you for bringing this information to my attention. My wife was here for two weeks of respite care. When she went in, she had two bed sores, when she came home she had nine bed sores as verified by our district nurses. Obviously being left in the same position for too long.
Continents pads were not changed on a regular basis resulting in soreness and
severe UTI now dealt with by GP. Carers were not reading the notes, resulting in my wife having the wrong breakfast.
Her hair was very matted, pointing to neglect! My wife was basically left in a state of solitary confinement, when she arrived home, she was severely dehydrated and in a state of deep depression.
I am now waiting for the results of the safeguarding issue raised by our nurses, other complaints have been made to the necessary authorities, let's hope something is done.
Reply from Sarah-Jane Clapson, Director of Care Operations at Chaucer House Care HomeThank you for bringing this information to my attention. Since my mother-in-law has been at Chaucer House she has gone from being bed-ridden with no movement and very little speech, to now walking with her walking aid and voicing her views on most things.
The staff are extremely kind and patient. This applies to the majority of them. Everyone is entitled
to an off day,
The care home is kept clean. My mother-in-law's room is cleaned every day. The laundry service is first rate and the meals are diverse and always of a good standard.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.719) out of 10 for Chaucer House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 3.8 out of 5 from 18 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 3.844 for Chaucer House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (67 Excellents x 5) + (89 Goods x 4) + (31 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (21 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 211 Ratings = 3.844
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.875 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Chaucer House Care Home is based on 15 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.875
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 15 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
