I am the power of attorney to a 98yr old lady who has happily been resident here for nearly two years. During my visits to her, it was clear that I could assist her and Gracewell Bookham further by volunteering to run the Friday Flower Club where residents are supported and encouraged to arrange flowers
that are then placed in the bistro coffee area and for vases in the ground floor dining room. We change the theme each week to keep everyone interested and stimulated. I have helped further by assisting at the one and two year anniversary garden parties, as well as running the summer outdoor activities with my husband who is also a volunteer. We played green bowls, putting and french boules. Recently I helped the activities staff to have an afternoon tea party to raise funds for Alzheimer’s World Day. All of these have been great fun and rewarding for all the residents. By volunteering, I have been able to feel closer to understanding how the different departments all function.

I could not be happier with the service my father is receiving at Gracewell Bookham. As his dementia got worse it became apparent he needed specialist/secure dementia care and I was recommended to visit Gracewell. From the very first interaction, with the admissions manager, I have been blown away
by the kindness, efficiency, care and pride with which the team have welcomed him. Management team members handled the assessment so sensitively and, once admitted, a senior carer, a carer and the team have been amazing in the way they have got to know Dad so quickly and been able to give him such targeted care.
The Memory Care wing is so well designed, his room is lovely and the activities warm-hearted and inclusive. Unprompted, they organised a birthday party for him and within days we were singing and eating ice cream at their own second anniversary BBQ. For the first time in 20 years of caring for my dad, I can relax. He has a new lease of life and so do I!

My aunt arrived at Gracewell after seven weeks in hospital, physically and mentally in a poor state of health and unwilling to successfully cooperate with anyone.

Over time, this has changed through the staff’s dedication, patience, tenacity, compassion and care (much of which was over and above

what might have been expected). All this has meant that my aunt has regained her health and is now able to return to her much loved home after nine months of respite care with Gracewell.

Living a long way from the care home and not being able to visit as often as I would like, I would particularly like to thank all staff for their time, understanding and communication and for giving me the peace of mind that my aunt was in safe hands and that you helped her and us achieve her goals.

Our father, who has suffered from vascular dementia for 8 years, was moved to Gracewell after two years in a substandard care home in Essex. The difference in him is astounding, he has a life full of interaction with the amazing staff at Gracewell and their level of professionalism and concern for his
wellbeing are on another level.
Before we moved him, his speech ability had reduced to barely being able to say a single word, now after five months at Gracewell he can have conversations again and is able to express himself once more. His diabetes is catered for and his general appearance and personal hygiene are as you would want your parent to be.
The general standard of the facility is fantastic and we as a family are very happy with our choice to move him to Gracewell.

I have spent but a few weeks at Gracewell of Bookham but can honestly say that I have been treated like royalty here. The staff are all extremely helpful and pleasant which is so important in a place like this. The services I have received have also been of a high standard, including the food, which
has always been very good indeed - in fact I have felt very spoilt! The activities take place daily and there is always something to interest me.

This is supposed to be a top of the range care home - part of the Sunrise Senior Living Group. I have experience in Sunrise and the lack of ability to retain staff from other care homes. The turnover of staff is ridiculous, the staff morale is poor and quite disrespectful, members of staff openly moaning
about working conditions, short staffed, poor catering cleanliness and response to call buttons being too long.
Staff sitting with feet on nurses station, Mother left in bed and not taken to dinner or offered food until I took her to find the dining room less than half full and part cleared. Other residents still in rooms and not at dinner and still had to ask for a plate of food, then left to feed her myself.
Cups and glasses left for patients who cannot hold cups or utensils without dropping it over themselves. Then to discover the lady washing up, cleaning, etc. is a relative of another resident and not a staff member who, like me, has had enough.
Lipservice granted to relatives but no action.

The staff have been wonderful, providing excellent caring support to both P and ourselves during this initial period. They really have gone that extra mile to ensure P is happy and settled - nothing has been too much trouble. The staff's commitment and dedication is clearly evident in all they do, particularly
in understanding P's needs and how best to meet them.
The stimulation from daily engagement with staff, and their kindness, patience and interest shown to P, have led to noticeable improvements.
The move to Gracewell has been the best thing for P. It has also made such a difference for us - always made to feel welcome, and given the time to chat about how things are going, and with such kindness and understanding.
You just have such confidence, knowing everything is so well managed. And all this in such excellent facilities- it is so lovely to see P in such bright, light, comfortable and well cared for surroundings and sit or wander around with him in the beautiful gardens.

Sadly since the original manager has left, the service has deteriorated. The staff turnover is quite large and the home seems to be primarily run by agency staff. The shifts for staff are very long and so recruitment appears to be a problem. Gracewell should consider split shifts as I am sure there
would be a greater take up if carers could work part-time. Dementia residents are often mixed with residents who do not like this. The chairs in the Bistro are not suitable for the elderly. The lounges on the ground floor are rarely used as the layout is bad.
The new manager has made no attempt to introduce herself to us and never seems to be there. Staff moral appears to be low, cleaning has deteriorated and there is never enough car parking during the day.
Just a few of the issues which need addressing.
My mother is very happy at the home and for that I am very grateful.

We chose Gracewell of Bookham for our mother, initially for a period of respite care after she was discharged from 6 weeks' hospitalisation due to serious illness. Considerable research of various in-home and care home options was carried out and Gracewell was chosen after a recommendation from friends
and several visits. We have been truly amazed at the progress she has made since she arrived at Gracewell. The staff have been magnificent, the level and quality of care has been wonderful and, as a result, she has felt safe, secure and has settled in quickly. She has been encouraged to join in various activities and has decided to become a permanent resident - the ultimate endorsement.

Gracewell of Bookham is an amazing place with exceptionally well-trained staff who are very kind and compassionate towards the residents.
My mother came to stay in October last year and was in a distressed state after a prolonged stay in hospital. She is now a changed lady. Her dementia is well controlled.
When we visit her she is always well groomed and dressed and takes part fully in the life of the home. The food and activities programme are both very good and varied.
Her birthday, last week, was celebrated by the staff, residents and family. She was moved to tears with the lovely birthday wishes and cake.
Our family and friends are free to visit at any time and always greeted with a friendly welcome. There are lovely reception areas where we enjoy a cup of tea and coffee with mum. She is very proud of her new home.

My Father was one of the first residents to move into Gracewell of Bookham in August. All of the staff were fantastic from the beginning and helped him to settle very quickly. The managers, front desk, nurses, carers, activity manager, housekeeping, maintenance staff and chefs are all very friendly
and extremely helpful. The chef made a wonderful chess cake for my Father on his 90th birthday. The staff made him feel very special and threw him a party and arranged dancing for him which he absolutely loved. The staff play chess and the piano with him and have really got to know him. One of the carers even puts the cricket on the big screen in the lounge for my Father as he knows he loves cricket. I can not praise the home enough. They are extremely kind and caring and very welcoming to families. My Father feels very safe and happy and he enjoys the food. The carers and nurses are outstanding and I feel confident that my Father is being cared for in the very best way by such kind people.

My family are very pleased with all aspects of Gracewell Bookham for my father. Excellent purpose built facilities with wonderful gardens make for a very uplifting experience. Enthusiastic and well-trained staff have certainly helped my father settle at Gracewell. He enjoys his food and appreciates
the good standard of the cooking and variety that is available. Having seen the professionalism of the nursing team there, we are very reassured about this aspect of the care available round the clock for my father. A varied activities programme is available which seems to cater for all sorts of interests.

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2016

I’m an experienced home manager, and I joined Care UK from another big care provider in 2016. I wanted to be part of a more proactive company that would help me achieve my goals. Care UK has a very good reputation and is well known for caring as much for its colleagues as its residents.

I believe that, as a home manager, you’re as good as your team. That’s why I always make sure I’m giving colleagues the support they need to do their jobs well. I love walking around the home, checking in with them and the residents. It’s wonderful when residents take the time to sit and chat to me and share what they’ve been doing that day.

I’m Georgie Wilkins, and I’ve been working as a Customer Relations Manager with Care UK for the past 5 years.

I’m really passionate about supporting people and being there for families when they’re making such important decisions about care. I understand how emotional and sometimes overwhelming the journey can feel, so I always try to make things as simple, clear and reassuring as possible.

For me, it’s all about building genuine relationships. I take the time to listen, understand what matters most, and make sure every person feels heard, valued and comfortable. I want families to feel supported from that very first conversation and to know they can always come to me with any questions or worries.

I’d describe myself as warm, approachable and understanding, and I pride myself on creating a friendly, welcoming experience for everyone I meet. It’s important to me that people feel at ease and confident in the choices they’re making.

Being part of Care UK means a lot to me, and I’m proud to work alongside such a supportive team to help create a place where residents truly feel at home.
