My mum came to Buchannan Court for rehabilitation after a broken leg. The nursing care and support provided has been of a very high standard. The emphasis has always been on the residents' needs and well being.
In particular, over the past four months, since the pandemic hit us, the care and communication
provided by the management and staff have been excellent. This has enabled us to transition these difficult times with relative ease.
The newly appointed management team has shown great initiative in implementing both improvements and changes in the way the care home is run/managed for the benefit of the residents and their relatives.
My mum is very happy to be a resident of Buchannan Court care home and would highly recommend it for anyone seeking a placement for their loved ones. Recently, mum has come to associate the care home as an actual home to her, which in my opinion, is high praise indeed.
Our thanks to all staff and, in particular, to the management team.

I cannot praise the home enough. My mother has lived there for over 2-years, and you could not wish for better staff. There is very little turnover, and they really get to know and care for their residents. How they have managed the Covid19 crisis has been amazing, providing weekly FaceTime calls, a
weekly Zoom meeting with the manager and now, socially distance timed visits.
The facilities the home provides are excellent.
They have a varied and interesting timetable of activities and entertainment and have even managed to carry some of them on during the last 4-months.
I have peace of mind knowing that my mother is happy and well cared for.

My husband, who was bedridden, should never have been accepted by Buchanan Court because his needs were too great for the nursing available. There was a lack of supervision of the nursing assistants and one in particulars attitude bordered on cruelty. He was made to feel a nuisance and was left for
long periods with no interaction from anyone. Some were caring but over-worked. Food was unappetising, inedible and tough. Rooms well decorated but impractical eg no reading light over bed. Large sum deducted from his account, unauthorised. No telephone call when admitted to A& E at 9pm. My husband rang himself the following morning.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Buchanan CourtWe were very surprised and dismayed to read this review - we feel this is in no way representative of the home or the wonderful team here, which our other incredibly positive reviews, as well as our CQC report, which is Good across all areas including safe, caring and well-led, will attest to. Your husband was properly assessed before admission and our team worked closely together to make sure he was safe, happy and cared for during his time with us, as we do for all residents. We always ensure we have enough colleagues on hand, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to make sure the care we provide is always of the highest standard, and our team are always fully trained and supported.

A big thank you to all the Dementia carers at Buchanan Court for taking very good care of our mum in the current unprecedented difficult time. We are totally grateful to the carers for keeping us informed with the changes happening with our mother's condition and the active action they are taking to
make her life normal as possible.
To highlight one incident which taken place as recently as a few days ago, our mother stopped eating over the weekend, she missed three meals in a row, and the carers called to inform us and contacted the out of hours GP to seek advice too. In addition, some of the carers were using online translate to try to use a few words in my mum’s mother tongue, to help encourage her to eat! When I learnt this, I felt so totally amazed and grateful to these carers.
I would like to say a big thank you to all of them and a special thanks to two staff in particular and the chef.

I stayed at Buchanan Court for 7 weeks, for rehab after hip surgery. I have to admit, when it was time for me to be discharged, I felt sad to leave as the staff have been so wonderful, friendly and helpful. All the team at reception, lifestyle, and carers have made me feel so at home, nothing was ever
too much trouble. I would definitely recommend Buchanan Court to others for rehab/nursing.

I can't thank you enough for all the patience, kindness and support during Mum's stay here.
The care home provides such a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The medical care is of an excellent standard. They have dealt with Mum's care and medication so thoroughly. Thanks again for your care. We wish all of
the staff the best.

During my stay, I was made to feel welcome. Staff were helpful and caring. I was encouraged to join in the daily activities, which were enjoyable, especially the themed day (Caribbean). Food, on the whole, was good and plentiful. The menu was not always accurate. There were alternatives offered instead
of printed menu i.e. sandwiches.

My experience of Buchanan Court was pleasant and helpful.
More staff needed at night.
Menus were calorie-loaded - mainly desserts.
Room cleaning was erratic and minimal.
Hospital visits should be better coordinated.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, PA to Marketing Director at Buchanan CourtThank you so much for taking the time to submit your review - we were very pleased to hear that you found our home pleasant and helpful, and to see your good scores, particularly for the team and care in the home. I would like to reassure you that we always make sure we have enough team members 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to ensure all residents are safe and well cared for. In regards to menus, our chef at Buchanan Court works closely with residents to plan varied menus that are nutritious and fresh - of course, if anyone would prefer a lighter dish or healthy snack, these are always available too. We do apologise for the cleaning - we were unfortunately short staffed recently due to seasonal holidays and some illness in the team, but I am happy to let you know that we are currently recruiting an extra member to the housekeeping team to ensure these issues do not occur again. Thank you again for your feedback and please let us know if we can help with anything in the future.

My first impression of visiting Buchannan was that the accommodation was wonderful and of very high quality and the staff were so welcoming and warm. My mind was made and I knew this was the right place for mum who moved in February 2019.
10 months on, my opinion remains the same. It is a wonderful
and family-oriented care home. I have developed close relationships with most of the staff and I look forward to visiting Mum as I feel that Buchannan Court is an extension of my own home. The senior management are always available and willing to listen to concerns of the family and visibly take action where needed. Staff care for residents with such patience and affection that is 2nd to none and no doubt is reflective of the management style that the home has adopted. Can't praise them highly enough be it senior management, carers, support, maintenance or admin staff. They are outstanding and I have grown fond of them. Thank you for taking care of my mother so well in her time of need.

It is a beautiful care home. My mum was admitted for advanced dementia. Mum was looked after extremely well by the carers, nurses and the management, staff, the food was catered by the chef who looked after mum's every need. Unfortunately mum passed away.
After mum passed away the staff are giving
me all their support and love and I can't thank them enough and still come here to visit them because this my second home.
The activities organised by the staff are brilliant. The residents always have something to do.
It is a brilliant care home, they look after residents so well, as well give all their moral support to the families.

Over the past months, including the present time, I have experienced care and understanding at all times.
The only unfortunate incidents which occurred one night by a group of night staff were dealt with in a professional manner and no similar abrupt or forceful behaviour has occurred since.
Team
leadership is of the high standard expected and respected by staff concerned.
My only concern is a lot of disturbance both during the daytime and at night with doors slamming and what appears to be "heavy" movements, consideration in this area and perhaps care in the handling of situations where sudden banging and noise could greatly not disturb some individuals, if avoided.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Buchanan CourtThank you for your review and your good and excellent scores and comments, especially regarding the high quality of care at Buchanan Court. We were very sorry to hear of the incident that occurred but I’m very pleased that we were able to resolve this for you with no further issues. In regards to noise, I understand that we have offered you another room which is in a quieter location, but that you understandably felt you preferred to stay where you were – of course if you change your mind in this matter just let us know and we’ll do our best to help. Thank you again for your review, and let us know at any time if you have any comments, questions or suggestions and we’ll always be happy to help.

I decided to bring my mum back to Buchanan Court because I realised that she was happier here and the care is of a superior level. I also felt she was a little more sociable.
After her fall she has gone backwards health wise and I am confident that Buchanan Court is the right place for her to recover
to the best of her abilities. The staff are friendly and caring and I have no doubt that this is the best place for my mum.

I have visited my friend almost every week for the last 18 months and she speaks very highly of the care home. The individual rooms and communal areas are clean and pleasant and the atmosphere seems friendly. My only reservation about recommending this care home is that it is on the corner of two main

A friendly and caring attitude throughout. Staff work hard to make us feel special. They work well together.
The general impression is that of a good hotel with the limitations imposed by the varied residents.
Because of the size and number of residents, it does mean that food sometimes arrives late
and needs modifying by carers delivering it to us.
A lot depends on the chef on duty.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Buchanan CourtThank you for your lovely review of Buchanan Court, particularly for your comments on the caring team at the home. In regards to the food in the home, we do apologise that recently, where we have had some short term gaps in the team, we have fallen short of our high standards. We always strive to offer fresh, delicious meals made in-house, tailored to the needs and wishes of residents. We have had to use agency chefs recently whilst we recruit new permanent team members and have now liaised with the company to make sure, where possible, that we use the same chef who we are working closely with to get them fully trained and supported to make sure we are delivering nutritious, tasty and hot meals to all residents. Thank you again for taking the time to submit feedback and please speak to us at any time if you have any comments or if we can assist in any way and we will be happy to help.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.672)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.672) out of 10 for Buchanan Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.772 for Buchanan Court is calculated as follows: ( (151 Excellents x 5) + (33 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 189 Ratings = 4.772
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Buchanan Court is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

Welcome to Buchanan Court. My background is in nursing. In fact, I worked as a paramedic for the air ambulance for a long time, and as a unit manager in a brain injury department. When I joined Care UK, I started out as a nurse assessor and clinical lead, before progressing to be a home manager.

I’m very proud to work for Care UK – it’s one of the leading providers of older people’s care in this country and it has great systems and clear values. It also supports its colleagues to do their best work and to progress.

One of my favourite parts of my role is meeting with residents and their families and understanding their needs. I love seeing people flourishing with the person-centred care they receive from our fantastic team. Supporting them to live the life they want – that’s our ultimate goal at Care UK.

I’m personally passionate about ensuring every person we care for is happy, safe, understood and able to continue enjoying their relationships with their loved ones.

In my spare time I like to unwind by watching movies and reading books. I’m from Romania originally and, when I can, I still like to travel and experience new places, people and cultures.
