My mother has recently moved into Smyth Lodge after transferring from another care home. It's been a very positive experience for her, and I've witnessed the staff going the extra mile to support the residents, and there is a very nice atmosphere in the home, and it gives me a lot of peace of mind to know that my mother is in safe hands. My mother was previously not eating very much in the previous home (due to the quality of the food), but she's now eating properly again and often tells me that she likes the food at Smyth Lodge. All of the members of staff I've met are friendly, caring and patient and I feel that my mum is being well looked after. I would highly recommend it.

My mother-in-law moved to the nursing floor in December 2022. It took a bit of time for her to settle, but the staff tried hard to make it as smooth as possible.
The staff there are lovely on the second floor. They are always friendly and take good care of her. The manager is also very nice and deals with things promptly.
As soon as you walk in, there is a nice atmosphere, and it feels homely. The food is a bit hit-and-miss, but they try their best.
The activities have got better, and Mum really enjoys going to them. They have had some permanent staff join recently, it’s nice to see familiar faces, and they are getting to know Mum.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them; they go the extra mile to help their residents and are very caring.

My sister stayed here for three weeks respite whilst I went away. It was lovely there. The staff were friendly and really took great care of my sister and her needs. The bedroom was set out very nicely, with a TV on the wall. The ensuite bathrooms were set out with grab handles and everything for safety. The lounge was very nice, and the dining room. There was a good choice on the food menu. There is a hair salon. The staff were always on hand. Our family were very happy with the care our sister received. I hope there will be a room available for my sister when I go away next time. I went away with no worries. My sister was happy, cared for and safe. Thank you all.

My great aunt and dad have recently moved into Smyth Lodge, both onto the dementia floor. This has been an emotional and challenging time for us as a family, and I cannot fault the care and support that the girls and the wider team have provided. Their approach has been sensitive, professional, skilled and tailored as they settle Dad and my great aunt into their new surroundings. We also can’t fault the cleanliness or quality of food, and the standards dramatically exceed what we saw viewing other care homes.

The support, kindness and understanding shown (not forgetting the yummy cakes) have been much appreciated whilst we adjust to this new chapter.

My mum went in for respite care, but has had to stay longer due to a longer recovery time. She is so happy at Smyth Lodge. It is an exceptional care home with amazing staff. She has been to others for respite but is so at home at Smyth Lodge. It was her 95th Birthday recently and she had an amazing afternoon as the staff made it so special for her. They are not just residents to the staff, they are treated as friends and with kindness and thoughtfulness. I highly recommend Smyth Lodge, whether it be for respite, long-term care or end-of-life care. Every one of their residents is treated with respect and kindness.

We were really reluctant to move Mum into a care home but sadly had no option. From day one, she has received an amazing level of care and compassion. The staff emphasise that we treat the home as if it was Mum's home, and my little dog is welcome too. My mum suffers from Dementia, and the home has a specialist suite to cater for all levels. Both the staff and activities team provide brilliant care and stimulation for the residents. Mum enjoyed afternoon tea out with other residents yesterday and has a trip to a garden centre organised soon. Every day there is something different to enjoy. They have all made a really tough and emotional time much easier, and I couldn't be more grateful.

The team at Smythe Lodge have been fantastic. They supported my wife very well, providing a level of care beyond my expectations. The whole team were attentive and went out of their way to put my mind at ease, keep me updated, and also see how my family and I were too. The team were also great with my daughter too on visits, humouring her and spending time with her. I'd definitely recommend it - my wife's room was clean and bright - and she was well fed too. Really great end-to-end service and support

My Dad came to Smyth Lodge for what turned out to be end of life care. I cannot thank all of the staff enough for the care and attention they gave him. They all went above and beyond what was asked of them and nothing was too much trouble. They all made a very difficult time easier to deal with as we knew he was getting the best possible care. I would recommend Smyth Lodge to everyone who is looking for care for a relative or themselves and I am only sorry my Dad didn't get to spend more time there. Thank you all.

Smyth Lidge has been our saviour. My dad came here for two weeks of respite care. We could not have asked for better. The care, staff, activities and desserts are outstanding. The staff have gone above and beyond for my dad, and I'm extremely grateful. My dad has been very happy here, and the staff should be very proud of themselves.

It wasn't easy making the decision to put Mum into a care facility, but now that we have, we've realised it was definitely the best thing to do. The staff are all amazing and are taking great care of her. She has done more in the past three weeks than she has in the past year and has constant stimulation and people to talk to, reassure her and care for her.

I found all the staff kind, helpful and caring both towards my husband and me.
Telephone queries were answered promptly and coherently.

All members of staff made a point of making contact with my husband and reassuring us at a difficult time of transition between respite care and ongoing permanent care in another home.

We cannot recommend Smyth Lodge Care Home enough. Our Mum went into the home for respite care after two nasty falls and was so happy and well cared for she has not returned home. The carers were excellent at keeping in contact with the family and let us know how Mum was settling in. Our Mum continually tells us how lovely and kind the staff are and how happy she is in her new home. It was not an easy decision to move Mum into care, and Smyth Lodge helped both Mum and all of us as a family. Mum is happy and safe, and we can ask no more. Thank you to everyone at Smyth Lodge.

Although my father was at Smyth Lodge for a brief period, the level of care and professionalism was greatly appreciated by myself and my brother. Unfortunately, he recently passed, but it was made a lot easier to bear just knowing that he had someone with him at the very end and was always made comfortable and out of pain. The level of nursing care he received made his last days a lot more comfortable, and as I don’t live near, I was always made aware of every stage. I have no hesitation in recommending this home to anyone looking for a suitable place for a member of their family. All members of staff are helpful, even in these trying times, and are always available for any problems which may arise. My dad, due to his frailness, did not join in a lot of the daily activities, but they are there if anyone wants to participate, and the staff really do go the extra mile to make sure residents have plenty to do.

Tracey Cheeseman
Tracey CheesemanJob Title:Home Manager

I’m a qualified general nurse and I’ve worked in nursing since the 1980s. I worked in emergency nursing for 20 years before moving into social care, first managing a small home and then managing larger homes. Before joining the Smyth Lodge team I was managing a 120-bed home.

I feel strongly that I and my team are here to help residents to live their best life. It’s important to see them as holistic people. They’re a husband or wife, brother or sister, a mum or dad or a best friend. There’s a lot we can learn from them.

I love hearing residents and colleagues laughing together. Humour is so important. I enjoy engaging with my team, with the people we care for and with their loved ones. I enjoy combining my nursing skills with being a leader. I believe that being a nurse – and a home manager – is an honour.
