My mother-in-law spent four weeks in respite at Smyth's and really enjoyed her stay. The staff and carers were really attentive, and nothing was too much for them. Highly recommend Smyth's if you are looking for a care home.

My mum went in for respite care, but has had to stay longer due to a longer recovery time. She is so happy at Smyth Lodge. It is an exceptional care home with amazing staff. She has been to others for respite but is so at home at Smyth Lodge. It was her 95th Birthday recently and she had an amazing
afternoon as the staff made it so special for her. They are not just residents to the staff, they are treated as friends and with kindness and thoughtfulness. I highly recommend Smyth Lodge, whether it be for respite, long-term care or end-of-life care. Every one of their residents is treated with respect and kindness.

We were really reluctant to move Mum into a care home but sadly had no option. From day one, she has received an amazing level of care and compassion. The staff emphasise that we treat the home as if it was Mum's home, and my little dog is welcome too. My mum suffers from Dementia, and the home has
a specialist suite to cater for all levels. Both the staff and activities team provide brilliant care and stimulation for the residents. Mum enjoyed afternoon tea out with other residents yesterday and has a trip to a garden centre organised soon. Every day there is something different to enjoy. They have all made a really tough and emotional time much easier, and I couldn't be more grateful.

The team at Smythe Lodge have been fantastic. They supported my wife very well, providing a level of care beyond my expectations. The whole team were attentive and went out of their way to put my mind at ease, keep me updated, and also see how my family and I were too. The team were also great with
my daughter too on visits, humouring her and spending time with her. I'd definitely recommend it - my wife's room was clean and bright - and she was well fed too. Really great end-to-end service and support

My Dad came to Smyth Lodge for what turned out to be end of life care. I cannot thank all of the staff enough for the care and attention they gave him. They all went above and beyond what was asked of them and nothing was too much trouble. They all made a very difficult time easier to deal with as we
knew he was getting the best possible care. I would recommend Smyth Lodge to everyone who is looking for care for a relative or themselves and I am only sorry my Dad didn't get to spend more time there. Thank you all.

Celebration of a 60th diamond wedding anniversary for my uncle and aunt. All staff are amazing and could not be more helpful. They all go out of their way to take great care of my uncle. They made a wonderful day for my aunt and uncle's 60th wedding anniversary and for friends and family to celebrate
their special day. Truly wonderful home and staff.

Smyth Lidge has been our saviour. My dad came here for two weeks of respite care. We could not have asked for better. The care, staff, activities and desserts are outstanding. The staff have gone above and beyond for my dad, and I'm extremely grateful. My dad has been very happy here, and the staff
should be very proud of themselves.

It wasn't easy making the decision to put Mum into a care facility, but now that we have, we've realised it was definitely the best thing to do. The staff are all amazing and are taking great care of her. She has done more in the past three weeks than she has in the past year and has constant stimulation
and people to talk to, reassure her and care for her.

I found all the staff kind, helpful and caring both towards my husband and me.
Telephone queries were answered promptly and coherently.
All members of staff made a point of making contact with my husband and reassuring us at a difficult time of transition between respite care and ongoing permanent
care in another home.

We cannot recommend Smyth Lodge Care Home enough. Our Mum went into the home for respite care after two nasty falls and was so happy and well cared for she has not returned home. The carers were excellent at keeping in contact with the family and let us know how Mum was settling in. Our Mum continually
tells us how lovely and kind the staff are and how happy she is in her new home. It was not an easy decision to move Mum into care, and Smyth Lodge helped both Mum and all of us as a family. Mum is happy and safe, and we can ask no more. Thank you to everyone at Smyth Lodge.

Although my father was at Smyth Lodge for a brief period, the level of care and professionalism was greatly appreciated by myself and my brother. Unfortunately, he recently passed, but it was made a lot easier to bear just knowing that he had someone with him at the very end and was always made comfortable
and out of pain. The level of nursing care he received made his last days a lot more comfortable, and as I don’t live near, I was always made aware of every stage. I have no hesitation in recommending this home to anyone looking for a suitable place for a member of their family. All members of staff are helpful, even in these trying times, and are always available for any problems which may arise. My dad, due to his frailness, did not join in a lot of the daily activities, but they are there if anyone wants to participate, and the staff really do go the extra mile to make sure residents have plenty to do.

My father, who has dementia, is a resident at Smyth Lodge, and from the first instant, they have treated him with care and respect. Since Covid begun, it has been difficult for everyone, and Smyth Lodge has handled the situation very well, ensuring the residents are occupied and cared for whilst lockdown
is in place.
Every member of staff that I have met have been friendly, and I know that my father is being well cared for. The activities that my father joins in with allows him to socialise with the other residents, which is so important for his mental health.
When my father appeared to be unwell they took the decision of calling an ambulance (as a precaution), and I am so very grateful that they did as whilst the ambulance crew were in attendance, my father had a heart attack and without them being there, I very much doubt my father would still be here.
A big thank you to all the other staff who are caring for my father.

My mother has been at Smyth Lodge since September 2019. She settled in well and has been very well cared for. It was just five months later that Covid struck and lockdown happened. This meant that we were unable to visit, but we felt that Mother was being well looked after, and we were able to continue
communicating by phone and WhatsApp. The staff had to put in a lot of extra work to cater for the needs that relatives could no longer take care of. An activities team was set up, which has been wonderful in providing a variety of creative ideas to keep the residents entertained and occupied. My mother was particularly sorry that she could no longer go to Church, but the Church has provided recordings of the services, and the carers have made sure that she is able to see them on the big screen. When there are problems, the staff communicate them promptly and are very helpful in sorting things out. I am very happy with all aspects of the care provided by the home.

My mother has been in Smyth Lodge since 1st September 2021, and I have nothing but praise for the excellent care she has received. The staff are very caring, and as my mum has dementia, we are very grateful that her carers keep us informed about how Mum is getting on. Her room is bright and well kept,
as is the whole Lodge, Mum constantly praises the food. The whole home is coping well during the pandemic.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.894)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.894) out of 10 for Smyth Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.894 for Smyth Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (278 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 310 Ratings = 4.894
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Smyth Lodge is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I’m a qualified general nurse and I’ve worked in nursing since the 1980s. I worked in emergency nursing for 20 years before moving into social care, first managing a small home and then managing larger homes. Before joining the Smyth Lodge team I was managing a 120-bed home.

I feel strongly that I and my team are here to help residents to live their best life. It’s important to see them as holistic people. They’re a husband or wife, brother or sister, a mum or dad or a best friend. There’s a lot we can learn from them.

I love hearing residents and colleagues laughing together. Humour is so important. I enjoy engaging with my team, with the people we care for and with their loved ones. I enjoy combining my nursing skills with being a leader. I believe that being a nurse – and a home manager – is an honour.
