On arriving at the care home you are greeted by a friendly face at the reception desk, the office staff are also available to help whenever required. For security all the internal and external doors require entry/exit codes. The café is also well stocked and open to all, offering items from the kitchen to give you an idea of what is on offer to the residents. On the residence floors the care staff are always friendly and available for any questions you may have. The home itself is well kept and clean throughout. A good variety of activities are on offer through the week and it's up to the resident whether to partake.

My grandad stayed at Smyth Lodge for a three-week respite stay following a long hospital admission, and I honestly can't thank the team enough for the care they gave him.
After being in hospital for so long, we were naturally anxious about the next step, but the staff made him feel welcome from the moment he arrived. They treated him with genuine kindness, patience and dignity, which made such a difference to both him and our family.
The communication with us was always reassuring, and it was clear that everyone genuinely cared about his wellbeing. He was encouraged to regain his confidence and independence while always receiving the support he needed. It was such a relief knowing he was in safe hands.
The home itself was always clean, comfortable and had a lovely atmosphere. Every member of staff we came across was friendly and approachable, and nothing ever seemed too much trouble.

My grandad returned home feeling much stronger and happier than when he first arrived, and we will

As the next of kin and niece of a resident I have found that Smyth Lodge is exemplary in all aspects. It shines as the gold standard in residential care- from the moment we stepped inside we felt the outstanding warmth, care and professionalism of all the staff. They address me by my name and are kind and welcoming; they always appear bright and cheerful and act as if they love the job they do. Thank you. You are superb!

Mum has been at Smyth Lodge since Nov 2025 and from day 1 or even before she started, I've been made to feel part of a very big friendly and well cared for family. My first encounter was with Rebecca who is exceptionally suited to her role and aswell as being super professional, she genuinely cares for all the residents and their relatives. Julie (dementia lead) met mum with Rebecca at home prior to starting and she asked all her questions in such a kind, caring and respectful manner - making mum the centre of her questions. That sums them up - the residents are at the center of the care provided, their needs are met & above & beyond too. The ethos is that if a resident is exhibiting a certain behaviour, then their current needs are not being met and they will endeavour to find out what they need. They hold many events which relatives can join with and today I attended a dementia information session which was really useful. It's nice to meet other carers and share experiences

From the moment my Uncle was admitted into the care home he was treated wonderfully by every member of staff and told us he was being very well cared for. When we visited we were greeted warmly by all the staff and the home seemed a very caring and friendly environment. The service has been second to none and I couldn't recommend Smyth Lodge any higher. Thank you for treating him so well.

Mum wasn't sure about moving into a care home, even though she needed 24/7 care. After just one week there, she said she wished she had agreed sooner.

Mum's one wish was simply to have a proper shower. At home, her house had slowly turned into a prison for her. When that wish finally came true, the smile on her face - you would have thought she'd won the lottery.

The care home feels like one big family, where everyone is welcome. The carers, nursing staff, and management are unbelievable and truly go above and beyond, not just for the residents but for their families too.

From my first visit to Smyth Lodge 2 1/2 years ago to the day my mum died it felt like a caring community. I always felt welcomed by all the staff and knew immediately that my mum would not only be cared for but loved. The staff go above & beyond to look after their residents. Her room was well furnished and kept clean & her laundry was always done regularly. The meals were well planned & the dining room was like a restaurant! The communal areas were sociable areas to enjoy & the garden was beautiful. The activities were well organised & there was something for everyone. As mum became more frail & needed more care the staff were patient & kind trying to make her last days as comfortable as possible. Words cannot describe how grateful I was to entrust my mum to this home & I will be forever grateful.

Wonderful atmosphere over the xmas period. Every resident is made to feel special with a visit from Santa & a gift. Inclusive xmas day dinner. Plus the care doesn't stop. On numerous/daily occasions I see one to one time taken spent with residents helping them feel safe & heard not to mention the activities which are great.

I was invited to a wreath making event, the staff were very engaging & made it fun. There was lots to do and everyone seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. I regularly go to events and have always enjoyed them. They do seem to put a lot of effort into keeping their residents occupied and happy.

My father was a resident at Smyth Lodge from September 2024 until his death, one week short of his 98th birthday, in August 2025. The facilities and standard of care at Smyth Lodge are excellent and my father enjoyed a greatly improved quality of life during his 11 months there. All the staff were so caring towards him and everyone I came into contact knew of his needs and wants. It really did feel that Smyth Lodge was his home and not just an institution in which he was a resident. Visiting him was a pleasure, from the always warm greetings from all the staff to having a morning chat with him over the excellent coffee and pastries in the coffee bar and a post-lunch glass of beer or wine in the bar or garden.

It is a special place staffed by a special team.

It's like living in a first-class hotel. The food is like being in a restaurant. The very first person who welcomed me was the team leader, she treated me like a family member. All the staff treat me very well. I am very happy here. It's like living with a big family.

Our father had been a resident at Smyth Lodge for about 17 months before he sadly died in January this year and the care he received was outstanding to the extent that the carers didn't just care for him, they loved him. The staff were very kind and patient with him as he had dementia and they called him 'Mr Grateful' as he was exactly that, always thanking them for everything they did to make him as comfortable as possible. I would recommend Smyth Lodge to anyone looking for somewhere for a family member. I should also add the staff were always supportive to the family members and a number of them have said they would like to attend his funeral. He will make his final journey from the care home to the church for the funeral service - a testament to how much we have appreciated everything the staff did for him.

My mother has been a resident at Smyth Lodge for two years and is very happy there.
The rooms are spacious, extremely well-appointed, and cleaned to a very high standard.
The dining room is warm and friendly and the food is excellent. There are activities for the residents every day

The care received is first class. The staff are wonderful, and very professional but also kind, caring, supportive, and helpful not only to the residents but the family members as well.

Tracey Cheeseman
Tracey CheesemanJob Title:Home Manager

I’m a qualified general nurse and I’ve worked in nursing since the 1980s. I worked in emergency nursing for 20 years before moving into social care, first managing a small home and then managing larger homes. Before joining the Smyth Lodge team I was managing a 120-bed home.

I feel strongly that I and my team are here to help residents to live their best life. It’s important to see them as holistic people. They’re a husband or wife, brother or sister, a mum or dad or a best friend. There’s a lot we can learn from them.

I love hearing residents and colleagues laughing together. Humour is so important. I enjoy engaging with my team, with the people we care for and with their loved ones. I enjoy combining my nursing skills with being a leader. I believe that being a nurse – and a home manager – is an honour.
