We moved both my Mum and Dad into Brook House Care Home in March 2023 and it was one of the best decisions we as a family made. They were instantly made to feel at home and knowing that they were eating well and had the care and support they needed was such a relief.

Unfortunately, my father was feeling under the weather and being cared for by the staff and they noticed he was having a stroke, they called an ambulance straight away and he was admitted to Hospital. When speaking to the Doctor in A&E they commented on the notes that had been sent with my Dad, which gave the hospital full information of his previous capabilities, which the hospital said was extremely helpful. Sadly Dad deteriorated and passed away peacefully a week later. During this time the care home staff were very attentive to my Mum who was both upset and confused and they are continuing to help and care for her whilst she adjusts...I cannot fault the care and support that they have provided.

My mother has been at Brook House for 4 weeks of respite and for the past 7 weeks, a fully-fledged resident.
She loves the place. Very friendly staff, very attentive to residents' requirements. Meals are readily available and always filling. The staff ensure the residents have daily activities to keep them occupied. The cinema room shows great films in the afternoon and my mum loves this. And above all, their medical requirements are catered for. Drug rounds twice daily. Recently we had a dining experience in the private dining room. Chef prepared a fabulous meal and this made my mother's 83rd birthday something special.
As relatives, we are always made welcome. Wonderful receptionist. Coffee in the Bistro is always flowing.

Altogether a great home and my mother is made to feel very comfortable and respected.

Overall Experience
My mum has recently moved into Brook House after becoming very lonely and anxious in her own home. The building is lovely, very well designed and beautifully decorated, there is a full activity schedule too which was important to us. The staff make a strong effort to get to know residents, relatives and friends and we always feel welcome when we visit. The Bistro is a lovely area which makes visits more enjoyable, especially with children!
As with most homes at the moment, I feel there is a shortage of staff which does present difficulties, especially in the evenings. Many dementia patients become anxious after dinner and I know mum gets very frustrated when there is no one around to call on for assistance.

It's early days for us so we've not had any regular meetings or feedback but the staff do tell us how mum is doing when we see them. I'd give a special mention to the lady in reception who is absolutely lovely to residents and visitors, she is doing a fantastic job.

Overall Experience

The most important aspect is the staffing, everyone seems friendly and welcoming. The staff clearly care for the residents with love and compassion and do their best to serve all their needs, whether social, domestic, emotional or medical. The whole environment of the home is pleasant and attractive. All areas are clean and well-cared for. The communal areas are comfortable and more the standard one might expect, in a decent hotel. Although my experience is limited, the evidence points to good quality cuisine throughout. It also seems that the home provides a wide range of activities and leisure opportunities for the residents, which are well-received. My only negative observations are, there have been times when I have wondered if the home is somewhat understaffed and the car parking is cramped and limited. Note that my star-ratings should be prefixed with 'as far as I am aware.'

Reply from Home Manager, Home Manager at Brook House

Thank you Andrew for your kind words and recognition of the team and facilities at Brook House, our staff work hard to deliver high standards of person-centred care. We truly value feedback to enable continuous improvement and have passed your comments to the team.

My observation is over a few weeks. I understand that being short-staffed plays a huge part in some of these.
Lack of communication to myself and siblings regarding mum's health requirements and actions/documented.
Fluctuations in meal times.
Food quality, assortment, quantity, bland.
Better observation required around the dining and kitchen due to the odd patient helping themselves, like a buffet and returning the food too, unnoticed.
Cleanliness of room, under bed, dead flowers in vase left on side.

I actually took my vacuum in to clean one evening.

Review from Sally G (Sister-in-law of Resident) published on 17 October 2022 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
His care was very good. The manager of the home was very approachable. Kept us up to date with regular meetings. Staff very caring and looked after him very well. He settled in after a few weeks and became fond of the staff as they also became fond of him. We hoped he had found his forever home.
However, in June the manager left (the day the CQC inspected) and the meetings ceased. We were then dismayed to be asked to a meeting with a representative from head office and handed a letter giving us 4 weeks to move him out! No explanation was given. We were not given any help or advice. He'd had a couple of altercations with other residents which had become physical. This is not unusual in people with dementia. Several residents have similar problems but Brook House seems not to have enough staff to cope.
Finally, when he left there were no proper handover documents ready for the new home. No care plans or list of medications were provided.

So sorry he had to leave but glad he is somewhere he can stay.

Dear Sally, we pride ourselves on the resident experience and take comments such as this seriously as it does not reflect the usual positive feedback we receive. I have had a very positive experience with Brook House since speaking to the customer relations advisor to enquire about moving my father in and during the preparation phase, moving day and his ongoing care since moving in. The home is very modern and clean, with really great features - dining rooms, lounges (with and without TVs), a hairdresser and an activity room. The Bistro cafe is great for having a drink with my father, and the garden courtyard is very peaceful, with comfortable seats and parasols if it is sunny. The staff are friendly and genuinely caring and, after regular visits, feel more like friends than members of staff. All of my questions have been answered, and my suggestions have been listened to and acted on wherever possible. I feel very relieved that I have found such a lovely place for my father to live in with staff that I can totally trust.

Since being a resident, I am feeling like myself again! Relaxation is back in my frame and feel I can hold a conversation once more. The major missing link in my life was my dear husband passing away. The staff at the care home are a big help, even the smallest of help is there from them, gets through and helps.

I thoroughly enjoy my respite stays at Brook House and always look forward to returning. The staff are all so lovely and work really hard to look after us well. There is always lots going on and people to talk to and the food is very good. I meet with the chef who works out with me what I like to eat during my stay here and they buy it in especially for me if they haven't got it. My room is also lovely, with great views over the front of the building and they give me the same room each time I return, for me it's like going on holiday.

My dear friend has recently taken up residence in Brook House as he is no longer able to look after himself at home. From my first visit I was immediately struck by the professional and friendly attitude of the staff who are a credit to their profession. The home is immaculate and has lots of quiet seating areas for those who want peace and quiet. The home is extremely well laid out and the bistro in the reception area is inspired - the coffee is lovely too. The menu is to die for and my friend is looking much more healthy now that he is eating regularly - we are looking forward to booking the private dining area at some point so that a few of his friends and family can join him for Sunday lunch! Overall I couldn't be happier that he is at Brook House - he is in a safe environment and thinks he is staying in a hotel - what better testament to the facilities and attitude of the staff.

My Dad currently lives at home with me but recently stayed at Brook House for respite care when I went on a much needed holiday. From my initial enquiry, the staff at Brook House were caring, informative, extremely welcoming and put my mind at rest that he would be well cared for during his stay. The facilities are beautiful, the staff are lovely and Dad was really happy with his two-week holiday and is very keen to go back for another stay later this year. It is such a relief to know that I can go away and know he will be well cared for at Brook House.

I'm a 1992 graduate with a Master's, PhD, and Health & Social Care qualification. I am no stranger to hard work, though I do try to sneak home to South Africa every year!
