My sister came to live at Portway House February 2025. On moving into her new home everything was made effortless, we are a large family and still supported us all with respect and professionalism. My sister's room is spacious, comfortable and clean. My sister is totally at home and enjoys the connection
she has with all staff. My sister is a very different person to the lady who moved in 9 months ago, this is attributed to good care, good nutrition, a safe and warm environment. When I visit all the staff are very welcoming, have a good knowledge of my sister and her needs. Thank you.
Reply from Faye Gailey, Home Manager at Portway House Specialist Care CentreThank you very much for your kind words. It is an absolute pleasure caring for your sister and creating and environment that she sees as home. She has very much become part of the Portway House family and evokes such laughter within the Home that makes every ones day. thank you once again for your kind review.

Mom spent 9 months in Portway House Care Home. During her time she was well looked after by the staff involved in her care. She always looked well cared for and clean. The staff followed the wishes of the family of what clothes to wear. Mom was very challenging with her behaviour and the staff brought
out the best in her. I value the input she received.
Reply from Faye Gailey, Home Manager at Portway House Specialist Care Centrethank you for your kind words. It was an absolute privilege looking after your mother. She was very much a person of whom no one within Portway House will every forget.

The moment Faye (manager) came to assess my dad, I felt at ease knowing he would be in good hands. Her friendly, bubbly personality reassured we made the right choice entrusting her & the Portway team with his care. Dad stayed at Portway from Feb-Dec 2024 & the care he received meant the world to us.
Faye's blend of clinical expertise, compassion & leadership made a lasting difference for dad & our family.
Every team member was warm & caring forming lovely bonds with dad-the smiles, gentle words, and laughter were priceless. The home was always clean, & welcoming becoming a safe home for dad during his final journey with Alzheimer's. When it was time to move him from hospital for palliative care, the team acted swiftly & compassionately ensuring his comfort & dignity. Even now seeing the staff fills me with happiness & gratitude for their kindness, respect & support. We will always be thankful for the care they showed dad & our family. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

It was hard to pick a certain month on the last question, because every month the team are professional, caring and always ready to help if mom needs anything. I certainly picked right when I chose Mom's forever home . The manager is always available if I need to chat too. I have so much peace of mind
knowing Mom is being loved and cared for. A big thank you to all the team , you truly are Angels . Xx

My grandmother has been at Portway House since May 2021, initially for respite care, later self-funded and permanent. The staff have been exceptional throughout her dementia journey, now in palliative care. They understand her needs, communicate gently, and provide personal care with compassion, including
help with eating and drinking. Staff are consistently polite, friendly, and supportive to our family and visitors. The nursing team keeps me well-informed and reassured about her health, always ready to answer questions. Admin and management have also been incredibly supportive, giving us peace of mind that she's in the best possible place. Thank you!

Portway House Specialist Care Centre is full of very caring staff. The manager is always there to help with an open-door policy. She is always ready to listen to anything anyone has to say and offer help and advice. The deputy is one in a million and will always go the extra mile to help staff, residents
and family. The care and all other staff are brilliant at what they do, very caring and all work to a very high standard. Once you have been to Portway in any capacity, you will never forget it.

I came here from hospital, I have been here for 3 weeks. Portway House is very big inside with 3 floors for different people. There are activities for all people to do in different ways. It's very well looked after the cleanliness is spot on. I'm waiting for a permanent bed. I thought to myself is this
the place for me? But you know what made my mind up simply it was the people who work here. Carers Nurses Managers activity planner. They put a smile on your face every day. They are the easiest going have a chat with and a laugh with and make you feel very welcome. I think that's the best thing ever being in a different place that's what you need. Comfort and friendly staff. Makes a world of difference. It's hard at first being in a care home but the rooms are lovely nice-sized en suite. Press the buzzer if you need help or a cup of tea. Recommended 10 out of 10 by me. Happy Days.

Do not place a loved one in here. My Dad was a resident for 14 months and only had 1 shower in all that time and we had to beg for that! Some of the staff are rude and think nothing of shouting in your face when asked questions about the lack of basic care your loved one receives. The food was the same
slop, day in and day out. It is no surprise that Dad stopped eating and lost a lot of weight! When in an emergency, DIY as it takes staff 5 mins to arrive after the emergency bell is pushed, our Dad nearly choked to death! He's been left sitting in his own mess, as a high-risk choker he's been laid nearly flat and has the bedroom door closed so he can't raise the alarm if needed as he's bedbound! There's zero interaction in activities for bedbound residents, they're just left in their rooms alone. The manager, well, just beware, she's not as friendly as she pretends! And she lies! Sorry, but it is the truth and we have evidence! She evicted our Dad due to our complaints of lack of basic care! Disgusting place.
Reply from Faye Gailey, Home Manager at Portway House Specialist Care CentreThank you for your review and comments. When your father was admitted into Portway House, the team ensured that all care preferences were discussed with the family upon admission. Many discussions were had with many family members about the care and food provisions within Portway House to try and meet the needs of your Father. All of the concerns that you have made were raised with management and higher management via our complaints policy and were investigated and evidence based responses were provided to family members, social services as well as CQC. We wish your father health and happiness in his new placement and wish you all the best for the future.

My Uncle was placed here after having a heart attack he was making an amazing recovery, but then had a fall (his own fault) and had to go back to the hospital, on returning to Portway House the carers did an amazing job looking after him and nursing him as he was palliative bu this time. They were also
amazing with us as a family and very supportive. A big thank you to all involved.

Mom came to Portway House from the hospital after breaking her femur after a fall and not being able to walk. The facilities and room were always clean, she was overall looked after very well. The carers were excellent towards her care. Mom was helped with her rehabilitation and she was able to come
home after a lot of hard work and determination on her part, no mean feat at 91!
Would recommend this care home - 9/10.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.588)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.588) out of 10 for Portway House Specialist Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.613 for Portway House Specialist Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (175 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (9 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 235 Ratings = 4.613
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Portway House Specialist Care Centre is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

My name is Claire. I started employment as head Chef, previously working at our sister site, Newbury Manor, in November 2019. I've been a Chef since leaving catering college with general chef and pastry chef qualifications. I have previously worked in hotels, restaurants and corporate catering. I was given a great opportunity to work over at our newly built site when it first opened its doors in February 2020. I find working at Portway House fulfilling and enjoyable.

In 2024, I won the prestigious Great British Care Awards - Chef Category for the Region!
