Lovely clean home, staff are lovely too. Takes a long time for equipment to be repaired or replaced. Needs more interaction with other residents rather than being left in a room day after day. Can't fault the food and the overall care.
Reply from Faye Gailey, Registered Home Manager at Portway House Specialist Care CentreThank you for your review. Unfortunately, our hands are tied in relation to external providers in regards to equipment, we continue to try our best to facilitate fast responses in order to help all residents with their care needs where possible. Our ethos is to support all residents with as many interactions as they wish on a daily basis, we like to meet our residents with their specified individual needs and wishes daily. Thank you for your kind words and I will pass them on to the team.

The home always makes you feel welcome and the 2 staff at the front reception have a good morning and smiles. Everywhere is spotless. Their dining hall is a place for anyone who wishes to use it, activities are for those able to do them even if they are unable, 'help is there'. Every other week the
hairdresser comes which makes the ladies feel better.

I am extremely happy to have found a bed for my dad at Portway House, who is suffering from Parkinson's disease, dementia and psychosis. My dad has not had the best care whilst being a resident at other care homes. He doesn't trust very easily due to the poor treatment elsewhere.
Here at Portway House,
the staff have gone above and beyond to ensure Dad has the best care and nursing possible, my dad has settled here very well. He has told me he likes the staff and they look after him very well. He is extremely comfortable in his room, with everything at hand for Dad's ease of use. Nothing has been too much trouble to accommodate Dad or us as a family for that matter.
Staff are very welcoming and polite, they make you feel like part of a huge family. I am so happy Dad can spend the rest of his time here with us, in comfort and peace, with the very best of care, dignity and compassion also. Portway house is also extremely clean in every part of the home and very well maintained.
Reply from Gail Bailey, Home Administrator at Portway House Specialist Care CentreThank you so much for such a lovely review. It is always a delight to be able to pass on the wonderful comments we receive to our teams.

When entering Portway House I have always received a warm welcome from the friendly staff. The home is always lovely and warm and noticeably very clean with a beautiful smell. The manager is very approachable always pleasant and helpful. She makes a conscious effort to personally go and see the residents
and make herself known to them. I think this is a lovely touch and can brighten up their day. I feel interaction and communication are vital for the residents to feel like Portway House is their home.

I am very happy with Portway House. The staff are caring and helpful and friendly. The rooms are clean and tidy.
I would like ore activities/entertainment for residents and easier access at weekends, as there is no reception staff or management and it often takes a long time to attract staff to open
the door.
Reply from Gail Bailey, Office Manager at Portway House Specialist Care CentreOn behalf of the management and staff of Portway House, we thank you for your kind words. Please feel free to review the monthly activities planner which is available in our newsletters. We would be happy to discuss this with you further if you have any questions. Please accept our apologies for any delays with the door being answered. We allocate 2 staff members, from 2 different departments who work on the ground floor to answer the door at the weekends. Unfortunately, if they are busy at the time of your arrival it may create a delay at the time. Again we would be happy to discuss this with you further if you have any questions.

Mom has been a resident at Portway House for approximately 17 months.
Sadly, Mom is bedridden and living with dementia, but the staff and carers have treated her with dignity and compassion.
It has been an emotional time for the family, but they have always been extremely pleasant and helpful.
From
the cleaners/laundry, carers, nurses, entertainment and staff. They work as a team.

She enjoys all her meals and is looked after by all the staff excellently. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff if anytime

In the time my husband has been in Portway House, I have found all staff and nurses very polite, caring and helpful. Even the building and all the surroundings are really comfortable. I have been into my husband's room and it has everything he needs and is what every person would expect in a very fine
hotel. And my thanks go to everyone who works there. Regards to them all.

My mom was transferred to Portway House after being in the hospital for 4 weeks. Whilst in hospital she was diagnosed with COVID-19 which made my sister and I very anxious. Mom has Parkinson's dementia so this was also a concern as she wouldn't understand what was going on and we couldn't be there to
reassure her. From the first telephone call with the nurse, I knew she would be fine. She went 'out of her way' to make sure that my anxieties were alleviated. Every time we rang to speak to a member of staff they were kind and supportive and couldn't do enough for us. They arranged for my sister to wave to mom through the window as she hadn't seen her for 5 weeks. We also had a video call set up but unfortunately, mom was admitted into hospital the day before. The care and support to mom was excellent and the support to my sister and I was amazing. I have no issue in recommending this placement to anyone. Many thanks to everyone, carry on the good work.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.588)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.588) out of 10 for Portway House Specialist Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.613 for Portway House Specialist Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (175 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (9 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 235 Ratings = 4.613
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Portway House Specialist Care Centre is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 48 registered maximum number of service users is 9.6, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
