This was the fourth period of respite care my husband has had at Crandon Springs.
He was delighted to have a room on the main floor with French windows leading out to a patio and then to the gardens.
All the staff were warm and welcoming and made settling in very easy.
The staff managed the difficult
balance of encouraging independence whilst being ready to help if that was required.
We were particularly impressed by the night staff who responded immediately each time my husband got out of bed and triggered the alarm.
My husband has a good appetite and really enjoys the meals at Crandon Springs.
My husband had such a good week and was almost reluctant to come home!
I had a real break knowing my husband was safe and so well cared for.
A huge thank you from both of us to all the staff.

As a short term respite care option Crandon Springs worked out brilliantly for us. My mum settled swiftly and was well cared throughout. When she inevitablly needs to move into care more permanently, Cradon will be our only consideration.

I cannot thank ALL the staff at Crandon Springs enough for their professionalism, care, support and kindness helping my mum through one of her most difficult years - it has been such a relief to know that she is so well cared for as I am some distance away. Mum has been very happy at CS and although
she misses her independence she could not have managed without this fabulous care home.

Mum went into Barchester Crandon Springs for a weeks respite whilst I went away for my birthday. She was very apprehensive as she had never stayed away on her own. The staff rang several times to ensure her needs would be met which gave me reassurance! Mum enjoyed chatting to some residents and staff
were all very nice. Because she needed help as her mobility has declined she said it was 'waiting' she found frustrating and she prefers her own bed. Food could be hotter.
Reply from Ruth Cooke, Home Admissions Advisor at Barchester Crandon Springs Care HomeThank you for sharing your experience of respite care at Crandon Springs. We're pleased to hear that our team helped reassure both you and your mum ahead of her stay, and that she enjoyed the company of residents and staff. Your feedback is really important to us, so we will share this with the team to acknowledge their good work and ensure every aspect of our service meets expectations. We hope to welcome your mum again in the future, should you require the support and reassurance that residential care provides.

Mum went into Crandon Springs in wells for Respite Care after staying with me following a Hip break 5 months ago. I was so worried about her holiday here but shouldn't have been! All the staff were amazing, her room was lovely, the food was enjoyed (though not plentiful) and the Activities very much
enjoyed. The only thing that could be improved is daily cleaning of bathroom and bedroom, she will be back!

My father has stayed at Crandon Springs several times for respite support. All staff have always remembered him and give him a warm and generous welcome, ensuring he is included in a variety of stimulating activities. His medical needs vary, and care is given to ensure they are met. Though he reluctant
to leave his house, he is happy to stay at Crandon Springs and we feel secure when he is there. (A big thank you to all staff).
He is also welcomed between stays to attend activities as a 'day-visitor', which he finds very stimulating.

I am absolutely delighted to have my friend in the care of Crandon Springs Care Home. She seems to be having a great time with the numerous musical afternoons, singing and dancing and generally mixing well with other Residents. The Activities team do a fantastic job integrating the Residents so that
they mix well and are kept busy whilst still having one-to-one sessions to make them feel individual. Also, the day trips out to Garden Centres and country walks take advantage of the lovely Somerset countryside as well as trips into Wells itself. When I visit, everyone makes me feel so welcome and cannot do enough to support us. It is just like an extended family. Thank you for all you do.

My in-laws have been at Crandon Springs since Dec 2024 initially as respite but are now permanent residents.
They have been treated with dignity and kindness by everyone as have we during a very traumatic time.
The home itself feels more like a hotel than a care home, there are no chairs in circles,
peeling paint or offensive odours as we saw on visit to other homes.
Most importantly we know that they are they are safe, warm, fed and cared for. They are treated by the staff as you would hope they'd look after their own family. If there are any concerns they are addressed promptly and we are kept up to date.
Dogs are welcome which means we can bring our dog in for visits and there are always biscuits awaiting her in reception as well as plenty of fuss and cuddles from the staff.
We just wish they would join in with more of the activities! Dad moans that there aren't any activities for the men and there aren't many men in the home to talk to.
More staff would be good for all.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.659) out of 10 for Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.659 for Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (234 Excellents x 5) + (70 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 320 Ratings = 4.659
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home is based on 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8, which has been reached with 27 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Head Chef Joined: 2025

With over 40 years of culinary experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge, expertise and creativity to my role of Head Chef, alongside my commitment to resident wellbeing.

My culinary journey began in the armed forces, where I catered for specialist teams, including bomb disposal and diving units. This early experience instilled in me the value of good nourishment to maintain physical health and emotional well-being, and the importance of precision and teamwork, all qualities I have carried throughout my career. I later honed my skills in some of Wells' most respected restaurants and also worked in care home catering, providing me with insight into the nutritional needs of older adults.

I enjoy designing delicious, home-cooked meals tailored to residents' preferences and dietary requirements, and I am passionate about making a meaningful difference through food. It's incredibly rewarding to see the pleasure a well-prepared meal can bring to someone's day, alongside vital nutritional benefits.
