We recently used Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home for a respite stay for my mother. She is a very reluctant respite stayer in general and we have used various other homes in the past. We found Crandon Springs to be excellent, a lovely environment to stay in and like being in a hotel for a week.
The staff and management were friendly, kind and professional. I was able to relax in the knowledge that she was safe and well cared for in a nice, caring, friendly environment, we will definitely be using Crandon Springs again.

I came for three weeks of respite while my broken wrist was healing. My room was very smart and comfortable and the care staff were very kind and friendly and efficient. Meals were mostly good and care was taken to cater for my intolerances. I had three delightful companions at my table with lovely
conversations and I enjoyed all the varied activities that kept us entertained and exercised. I also had the freedom to come and go as I pleased to pursue outside activities and packed lunches were prepared if I missed a meal. Altogether, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was sad to leave.

This is my first experience of a care home, especially one with a dedicated, good medical floor. I have found all staff very hardworking, kind but at times, appearing overworked. The fact that medical help is readily available is comforting, the rooms are very comfortable, clean and suitably furnished.
There is a weekly programme of activities to suit as many as possible with trips away from the home. Most rooms have their own TV.
Food is good with an acceptable choice, in dining rooms that encourage residents to mingle. Wherever possible, help is given to those who need help with cutlery etc. A kindly air pervades.

My mum has been in respite at Crandon Springs for 7 weeks. During that time she has improved both physically and emotionally. The environment in the home is very pleasant and relaxing. The staff are amazing and I cannot recommend them enough. They are kind, caring and professional. There are lots of
varied activities which my mum enjoyed during her time here.
My dad joined my mum for 1 week and also really enjoyed the home commenting on how friendly and kind the staff were. He also particularly liked the food and liked the fact there was plenty of it.
Thank you to everyone. I am sure we will be using the home in the future and will be recommending it to our friends.

Second visit and was an emergency. No remote control for 4 days. After 5 days there was still no hand wash in her bathroom. For 3 days there was a dirty stain in the toilet. On more than one occasion my mum was dressed in clothes that were men's and clearly not hers - the trousers were so tight I could
barely pull them over her hips. They rubbed and left marks around her waist and legs. There was no water available in her room until I insisted. When mum left she was dressed in the wrong clothes and missing numerous items- clothes, pad for her wheelchair and a missing shoe. The first floor supervisor was wonderful over the phone and my issues were resolved. I raised concerns with the general manager that residents were sat in front of their unfinished meal for 2 1/2 hours on a Monday night from 5.15pm - 7.45pm amongst trolleys of leftover food and dirty crockery, while the only two lovely staff tried their best to help residents to bed. Very shortened review due to 1000 characters.
Reply from Feedback Team, The Feedback Team at Barchester Crandon Springs Care HomeThanks for leaving your review, we're sorry to read you had a less enjoyable experience at our home for your second visit with us. With urgent, out-of-hour admissions, we do our best to support straight away, however on reading your comments, a few things were overlooked on arrival and we are sorry about this. With missing items, we always ask that residents label their belongings so that they don't go missing, and we understand the home is still looking for a few of these for you and will keep in touch. The housekeeping and catering teams have been made aware of your comments, and these will be reviewed by the General Manager. If there is anything further you wish to advise us of, you're more than welcome to reach out to us at feedback@barchester.com so that we can support you. Mum's physical and mental health improved drastically after moving her to Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home from another care home. She was made to feel very welcome and special by all the staff, as were her wider family whenever we visited. She was a resident there for three years and was very well
cared for throughout her stay. The activities are excellent with a good variety of things to do. If ever there was an issue, the staff or management team were on hand to address it.

Our family, all of us, have always felt very welcome at Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home. Always been impressed with all the staff's level of care to all who come here, from the start of my mother's residence here two years ago. I have joined in with activities and thoroughly enjoyed them. As a
family, we have no complaints about Crandon Springs. The management is readily available and easy to talk with on the rare occasion we'd like to discuss.

I arrived with a heavy heart but after a few minutes, knew Dad would be safe, happy and well looked after at Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home from smiling, caring staff, great cafe, decor/look and feel. Nothing was too much troubled.
My dad was only with Crandon two weeks recovering. He actually
came back in a great frame of mind and fir for which we can't thank them enough for treating him with respect and understanding his needs.

My father lived in Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home for around eighteen months before he passed away in March 2024. He moved in for respite care after a hip operation and was so happy with the care and attention he received, he decided to stay. This was quite a shock as for years he'd insisted that
he'd never live in a care home. The friendliness of carers and management was a large part of this, Dad felt safe, valued and relaxed. There were plenty of opportunities to socialise with other residents in the cafe and through activities, social events and guest events. I cannot thank Crandon Springs enough for making Dad's last years happy and content, for being vigilant with his healthcare and for caring for him with compassion and dignity throughout his time there.

My father has recently passed peacefully at Crandon Springs. He was somewhat apprehensive when he first made the decision to move to the care home in 2022 but he knew that he needed more support than could be easily provided at his flat. He settled in quickly thanks to the great support and care that
he received from the staff and took advantage of the events and social program provided to get to know other residents. Being not far from the center of Wells, friends from his old flats used to walk over to see him and we could easily take him out for lunch and walks. More recently he was in hospital and the manager and staff went the extra mile to arrange that he could return to the home as soon as practical to continue his recovery. He was happy, cheerful, and chatty with the staff and residents. We thank everyone involved with his stay and are happy to recommend Crandon Springs to other families.

I would like to thank the Crandon Springs team for the arrangements they made for a group of three of us who visited one of the residents in the dementia care wing yesterday. We were all at college together many years ago! They arranged for us to have lunch in a separate room, which made it much easier
to hear what was said (we are all over 80). The staff were wonderfully caring and practical, as well as providing a delicious lunch in a lovely environment.

I find the staff at Crandon welcoming and obliging. Although my mother does not participate in the activities, all seem very popular with the residents. The room cleaning at one stage was not very good, but is now vastly improved. My one concern is staff shortages at weekends, sometimes the residents
do not get an afternoon cup of tea.

My mother stayed at Barchester Crandon Springs for the first time for some respite care. From introduction, to reception of her during an exploratory visit, to welcoming her, caring for her during her ten day stay, to finally leaving, the staff and attention to detail received by us was exemplary. The
care home is incredibly well appointed, spotlessly tidy and we cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you so much for making her stay as enjoyable as possible and she cannot wait to return. Looks like we can book another holiday without any worries!

My 94-year-old mum has been living at Crandon Springs since November 2022. She has mild dementia. I have found Crandon Springs a pleasant and welcoming place to visit. There is always tea, coffee and cake available in an attractive cafe in the reception area and the staff are friendly and smiling.
Mum has a comfortable ground-floor room with a door opening directly onto the enclosed garden which she enjoys walking around (although it does need a bit of maintenance!). All the staff I have had dealings with have been helpful, caring and patient. Mum has had a few issues due to her dementia, which the staff dealt with in an understanding and effective way. They make every effort to get to know each individual resident, their likes and dislikes, and arrange their care accordingly. Mum enjoys the meals and the range of activities. The manager seems to be a good manager with a genuine interest in the care of the elderly, and a determination to make Crandon Springs as good as it can be.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.659)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.659) out of 10 for Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.659 for Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (234 Excellents x 5) + (70 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 320 Ratings = 4.659
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Crandon Springs Care Home is based on 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8, which has been reached with 27 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
