Review from Julie B (Daughter of Resident) published on 16 July 2024 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience
My mother was in Alma Barn from July 22 until March 24. The nurses and carers worked really hard but never had enough time to do more than the basic care.
My mother had no mental stimulation at all and had little engagement with anyone. That could have been blamed on her Alzheimer's but since moving to a new home, she is a very different person. She's happy now and laughs a lot, sings, feeds herself (which she hasn't done in years) and chats all the time.

I wish I'd moved her out of Alma Barn much sooner than I did.

My husband was a resident for 19 months. He was always treated professionally, respectfully, and competently standards in other areas were variable. However, in the latter months, my husband became increasingly ill and the staff were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. He was treated with genuine kindness. The care given was second to none. All the staff at Alma Barn are truly kind, gentle, and professional. They deliver personalised care to all individuals. My husband was lucky to know them.

My mother has been a resident at Alma Barn Lodge Care Home since November 2022. She has received good individual care over subsequent months and it was therefore an easier decision for my father to join her in the home when he could no longer be cared for in his own house. There have clearly been challenging times for the Lodge as has been the case across the sector, but staff and local management have really tried very hard to do their best for residents, and we have been happy as a family tom commit to them going forward.

My parents spent two weeks in Alma Barn, having respite care and I was very pleased with the kindness of the staff. My parents wanted to be able to sleep in the same room as they do at home and much trouble was taken to make a bedroom with two comfortable beds in one room with a sitting room next door. The rooms were clean and well appointed and as they were up on the second floor, the views were wonderful, which my father appreciated particularly. The food was good and they were well looked after. Thank you Alma Barn for making our first experience of respite care a positive one.

My wife has now been in the care home for over 2 months and has settled in well thanks to the friendly atmosphere of all the staff. When I visit, all the staff have made the effort to call you by your first name, which is good. Management keep me up to date with my wife's needs and moods which puts my mind to rest that her needs are being cared for. In the first few weeks, we had a few complaints regarding general cleanliness, this has now been attended to.

It has been good to be part of the start of this care home. All brand new - delightful decor! Staff are warm, caring and ensure the welfare of the residents is paramount. As a visiting relative, I feel welcomed and am confident that my beloved mum is being well looked after. Catering could be upgraded.

When I first walked through the doors of Alma Barn Lodge, I felt not only the people but the building wrapped itself around me - I knew there and then this was the right place for my friend and the family agreed. My dear friend spent her final days being cared for by people that really cared, she loved her room and the beautiful views.

My Mum went for respite care at Alma Barn but realised very quickly that her quality of life would be greatly improved by becoming a full-time resident. This decision became apparent very quickly, not just because the home is a lovely building but the helpfulness of the staff and the atmosphere you feel could not be faulted.

Excellent care home, lovely people to deal with across the board including customer relations, admin, nursing, and resident care. Looked for a local care home after my mother became unable to live independently through ill health but lived 200 miles away. Alma Barn Lodge Care Home stood out and they have been a joy to work with and arranged for my mother to move there, where she is very happy. There is a family atmosphere with all the staff knowing the residents by name, knowledgeable about their likes, and having an active interest in their health. The residents are treated with such care, kindness, and dignity. I feel my mother has been looked after to a very high standard. I'm informed when there are any changes to mum's health, and I feel very comfortable talking to the Customer Relations Manager and the nursing staff about any matters at all. They are very active in getting any additional medical attention including district nurses, doctors, and hospital. Brilliant care home, lovely people, happy mum!
