First impression of home were very good. Administrative staff very pleasant and helpful care staff generally good although patients has to wait a long time when needed help and carers were sitting around chatting! Food and drinks okay but some portions small for the more hungry patients. Not a good
idea to have tall jugs which I witnessed being tipped over and contents split on a daily basis. Rooms well equipped, bedding poor quality. Cleaning in some areas not good, for example, toilet bowls, and light shades covered in cobwebs.

Thank you for taking the time to complete a review. I have taken all your comments on board and have shared them with the team. I will review the bedding and speak with the kitchen team re the portions. We have also employed a new housekeeper to assist with the upkeep of the unit. I am pleased your stay was comfortable, and we were able to support you to get back to your home environment.
Kind regards

My mother in law moved into the PAU in November from hospital and an interim home. Gail and her entire team were brilliant in helping getting her moved to HH which is now her permanent home. The care, dignity and respect she has received is outstanding and the whole environment is brilliant. Having
been quite reclusive over the past few years (not a natural thing for a former publican) she is back to her former outgoing self, knowing she is in a place of safety and security - it's the best she has looked in years.
The whole home is geared to keeping its residents as active and involved as possible with multiple areas to sit and relax in and lots of activities on a daily basis.
The room (they are all the same) is brilliant- more a bed-sit with kitchenette, definitely not just a bedroom where you are confined to (like in other homes we looked at) with its own proper sitting area so you don't feel you are visiting someone's bedroom.
Thank you to EVERYONE who is involved in caring for her
Reply from Gail Watkins, Registered Manager at Hawkhurst House PAUThank you for taking the time to submit such a lovely review. We are pleased that mother in law is happy and settled whilst making progress. I will share this review with the team.

Mum arrived in November to HH, she was extremely frail and traumatised by her sudden decline in health, mobility and independence. Gail and her team were incredibly supportive and with a wealth of experience and knowledge, helped mum transition into her new home gently and quickly. They have been so
kind, not only mums physical needs but also her mental needs have been cared for, Fast forward to January and mum is transformed! The rehabilitation, physio and care teams plus frequent GP service give Mum outstanding care; her suite is beautifully laid out and decorated, with not only practical needs met but mental needs considered, designed into zones so it feels more like home, her own wet room provides privacy and dignity which is so important. Mums room is beautifully clean as is the rest of HH, her laundry is done in hours - I haven't seen Mum this happy in years ! HH's vibe is one of happiness, fun and kindness in spadefuls. Thank you.
Reply from Gail Watkins, Registered Manager at Hawkhurst House PAUIt is our pleasure to look after Mum, and yes, it is lovely to see her happy. Thank you for taking the time to write a review and for the lovely comments. I will share the review with the team and they will be delighted that we have been able to help mum.

Mum originally went to HH for rehabilitation following a hip replacement.

Mum was rehabilitated and now walks really well with a zimmer & receives regular exercise

Mum settled well & we as family including Mum decided HH would be Mums new home

Her care suite is home from home and is surrounded

by some of her furniture & personal items that are precious to her

Staff are attentive, kind, caring & meet Mums needs
Nothing is too much trouble for them

With a choice of home cooked meals, lots of activities tailored to individual needs , regular medication & company, living at HH has been a big benefit to Mums health & wellbeing both mentally & physically
Thanks so much for all you do not only for mum but for the peace of mind we have knowing Mum is so well cared for

Reply from Gail Watkins, Registered Manager at Hawkhurst House PAUThank you for your kind and lovely review. It is a pleasure to look after Mum and we all enjoy your family visits as well as mum!

I really enjoyed my 2 weeks at Hawkstone, a lovely easy going atmosphere, very needed, the staff are very kind and lovely as well as the others members of staff. The physiotherapist and use of the gym were used in my recovery from a knee replacement and I really benefited from the rest and care - not
to mention the cakes!

When our mother first came to stay here it was on a hospital discharge pathway and our initial dealings with the management seemed positive. However as time went on (she was there for 8-9 weeks) the care delivered by the staff was very poor. We recognise that our Mom could at times be difficult, she
had quite a few healthcare needs and could at times be depressed. But I don't think this would be unusual when caring for elderly, dementia patients and that training would be in place so the staff would know how to deal with this. Instead the so-called carers told her she was known as Moaning **** and often ignored her buzzer, and were rude and unhelpful and made very little attempt to communicate with her. They put her in incontinence pants instead of assisting her to the toilet and on at least one occasion lowered her mattress all the way to the floor knowing this stopped her getting out of bed (she had some mobility with a walker but couldn't get up off the floor).
Reply from Gail Watkins, Registered Manager at Hawkhurst House PAUThank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are truly sorry that the care did not meet your expectations. The team at PAU are virtually the same team since we opened and have received extensive training. The call bell system is monitored and any call taking over 5 minutes which is rare is looked into. The bed was lowered to the floor for patient safety and is designed to do this and the incontinence pads were worn by patient choice, but the reviewer may not have known this. I have shared this feedback with the team including the Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist and they are truly upset as they felt they had a good rapport with the patient concerned. However, we do not always get things right and we have taken on board the reviewer's comments and will endeavour to improve our practice where needed. My door is always open and I would have valued the opportunity for the reviewer to have come to discuss any concerns she had at the time. Kind regards, Gail and Team

I had a very comfortable and pleasant few weeks. My room was large and well equipped with sturdy furniture. The staff were marvelous and willingly gave as much attention as necessary. Visitors were welcome and could help themselves to refreshments, my husband even joined the exercise class! The big
central room had a dining area, plenty of comfortable chairs and a large television in the center. The games area was the other end with a long table for games and a jigsaw table. All meals could be taken in your room and there were quite a lot of residents who never appeared.
The gym was well equipped. All in all, I enjoyed my stay. Thank you to everybody.

I cannot rate Hawkhurst House PAU highly enough. The carers, nurses and management were excellent in looking after Mum and us as a family. All staff were smiley, friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The carers and nurses treated mum with the utmost dignity and kindness. I cannot fault anything they
did. Even the cleaners, laundry staff and catering staff were helpful and friendly. Communication with management was excellent. Hawkhurst House PAU is the best and highly recommended.

Excellent care home, more like a beautiful hotel. The rooms are well furnished with all resident's needs. All the staff are very caring and compassionate. The staff spend a great deal of time with the residents. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The food is first class, freshly cooked each day.
The day room is well used by the residents as are the beautiful gardens. Or if you prefer there are some lovely quiet corners where you can go and read a book and relax.
The visitors are also catered for. You may join your resident for lunch or there are snacks and tea whenever you feel the need for refreshments.

My mother was discharged from the hospital in April to Hawkhursy House. She was unable to walk due to a fall. The care she received was excellent. The staff were very caring. The room and facilities at the home are extremely good and modern. Unfortunately, he health issues got worse in the last month
of her life. In her final days, staff were sitting with her even though she was not aware of them. Very caring.

Signing in system didn’t work.
We noticed no newspapers were distributed nor the resident was asked if she would want a newspaper.
Other than that the home seemed OK and provides good care.
Our friend seemed reasonably happy and well cared for.
Reply from Gail Watkins, Registered Manager at Hawkhurst House PAUThank you for taking time to submit a review. We are sorry that the signing-in system did not work for you. We have not received any other comments or issues regarding it not working to date, but we will continue to monitor. We purchase 2 newspapers daily for the lounge area. We are a short-term unit with admissions and discharges most days and it would not be a service we could provide to each patient at present. Most patients have visitors/family that can bring in such items and all have a TV in their rooms to keep up with current affairs, should they wish. I'm glad your friend seemed happy and that the care was seen as good.

Apart from 2 males (I think it was two unless the same person does day and night shift) the staff were angels. Unfortunately, there were at least two staff short on each day and night shift which often led to longer waits. The food was tasty but they need more fruit and more salad! Also the puddings
here most days are custard and a piece of cake! The nursing staff are excellent, one member of staff in particular!
Reply from Gail Watkins, Registered Manager at Hawkhurst House PAUThank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that 2 of my staff did not meet your expectations. With regards to staffing levels, unless someone is off poorly at short notice, we are never short of staff and in an ideal world perhaps patients feel there should be more. We will continue to monitor our staffing levels to ensure the needs of our patients are met. I’m sorry this was not your
experience. With regards to the food I will forward your feedback onto the kitchen. On a positive note I feel privileged that our unit was able to assist you to mobilise again after your period of 2 years not being able to walk. Feed back is important and will be shared with all the team. My team and I wish you well for the future.

My husband was released from hospital after spending one month there. He was really down and depressed. It was nice for him to have a room on his own, and the room was comfortable and clean. He was to come and go within the home as he pleased so as to make some friends. The staff did all they could
for him to make his stay pleasant. Care was taken looking after him both physically and mentally. Having spent a couple of months with you as was family we felt he was ready to come home. Such an improvement but we still need to keep pushing him to do things. Many thanks for your help.

Truly excellent team, worked to get Mum as fit as possible. Nurses, physios, occupational therapists, social care, management, all determined to support her to achieve her goal of going home. Due to a series of infections it wasn't possible, but she was brilliantly cared for while she was a resident
there. All the staff were friendly and helpful and I was made to feel so welcome all the time. The resident is given the tools and loads of support and it is truly up to them how far they can go.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.356)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.356) out of 10 for Hawkhurst House PAU is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 15 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.556 for Hawkhurst House PAU is calculated as follows: ( (126 Excellents x 5) + (25 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 171 Ratings = 4.556
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hawkhurst House PAU is based on 12 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.8
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 12 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
