Ty Penrhos Care Home is a modern homely setting specialising in residential and nursing dementia care and a community for adults with physical disabilities. Positioned in the newly developed Castlegate area of Caerphilly, Ty Penrhos has been built to exacting standards and incorporates the very latest thinking to support residents to maximise their independence.

Staffed by a highly experienced team, Ty Penrhos has been designed to accommodate the changing needs of its residents. Accommodation is based on the principle of providing a smaller homely wing within the safety and security of a modern structure. This provides the opportunity for people to be cared for in a personalised and familiar setting by a consistent and dedicated colleague team.

Ty Penrhos provides en-suite accommodation for 83 people across five areas/communities, which support orientation with careful consideration for colour, light and furnishing. Each community has its own facilities with spacious movement spaces, lounge/dining areas and kitchenette, and assisted bathing.

All bedrooms at Ty Penrhos exceed minimum space requirements and are equipped with an en-suite walk-in shower room with toilet and basin. Every effort has been made to incorporate the concept of dignity, privacy and choice into the community. All bedrooms are fitted with telephone points, Wi-fi access and TV units.

Meals are prepared in the high-tech kitchen, where individual and specialist diets can be catered for by experienced and professional colleagues / team members.

Additional services at the home include a hairdressing and religious services for residents' convenience. The home is also equipped with commercial laundry facilities that offer the highest standards of service.

Absolutely cannot fault the care Mum is receiving. Nothing is too much trouble and the ratio to residents on Mum's unit is amazing.
Management go above and beyond. Constant contact with Mum's unit. Activities, trips and fundraising are well organised.

My wife has been a resident at Ty Penrhos since June of last year on Daffodil Rise. She is happy and well looked after by all the staff who are excellent. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they treat my wife as if she were a member of their family, for which I am extremely grateful.

When I couldn't manage to look after my husband, who suffered from Alzheimer's/dementia/cancer, I was advised by the hospital, where he was admitted for respite, that he had deteriorated and I wouldn't be able to cope. I started looking for nursing homes, which I dreaded. I was asked to travel to Splott,
which I was not prepared to do. However, I was offered a place in Ty Penrhos Care Home, which I accepted at once as a friend of the family had firsthand experience, as her father had been cared for there. Also, all my family live in Caerphilly and the surrounding area. We were both treated like their own family. I was really happy and my husband settled in very well and I could see he would be happy too.

I am writing on behalf of my husband who is a fairly new resident at this care home. I have found the staff most helpful and polite. He is well cared for and always looks clean and tidy. He enjoys the food (the breakfast is his favourite). His room feels cosy and warm with a few of his own pictures
and TV. After visiting him, I come away knowing he is well looked after, which gives me great peace of mind.

Very impressed with the level of care my grandfather has received so far. This one-to-one carer is fantastic, and my grandfather clearly enjoys his company. Lots of activities - it's great to see photos of the residents taking part in these. Clean home, spacious rooms, excellent staff - couldn't ask
for more. Having worked in ASC myself previously, I know how hard it can be to find the right care provider, so I'm very impressed with Ty Penrhos so far!

Good activities and interaction with residents in the home. The home is always clean and welcoming, the staff are always polite and friendly, and nothing is too much trouble for them, and we, as a family, are always kept up to date on visits and by phone calls. My father has one-to-one care during the
day; we are very happy with the care and safety this provides him with. My dad interacts and responds well with his carer; he is calmed by him when he gets agitated and loves his daily games of dominos. Dad appears happy, well cared for and well-fed.

Whilst having difficulty visiting my father due to Covid restrictions, I was always able to talk to a member of staff regarding his health. I have found all the staff in Caerphilly Unit to be very caring, kind and supportive. Now I am able to visit whenever I want, I have always found my father to be

My father has been a resident here since Dec 2021, and from the first visit, I have nothing but praise. They have and are continuing to provide a great standard of compassion in their continuing high standard of care of my father. He has advanced dementia and is non-mobile. The staff are always welcoming,
My dad always looks calm and comfortable whenever I visit and now the restrictions have lifted we can go anytime. I love how they try and continue to engage with him and encourage him to participate in activities. His favourite is singing. Daffodil Rise has recently been painted and looks fresh, his room is always clean and the ensuite wet room is perfect for his needs. Staff are accommodating and email exchanges are prompt. Fabulous Care home. Thank you for all you are continuing to do.

Now that Covid has relaxed restrictions, I feel happier giving a true assessment of care. Whenever I visit, I am made to feel welcome, and the care attendants are always happy to accommodate me and my wishes. The home is light, airy and lovely and clean. Staff seem to interact cheerfully with residents,
even under challenging circumstances. I do feel that all bread should be wholemeal to assist with common toilet problems and fibre helps.

My mum was at Ty Penrhos for 6 years. She suffered from vascular dementia as well as diabetes, which added extra problems. I wish to give a massive thank you to every member of staff at the home, especially on Daffodil unit. The wonderful care and love given to my mum has left me and my family totally
and utterly grateful to the superb staff. I don’t know all the names but special mention to those who cared for mum over the years. Thank you all so much.

I would like to thank all the staff at Ty Penrhos for the kindness they showed to my mother whilst she was a resident at Ty Penrhos. My mum suffered from Alzheimer’s, and we were only able to visit her once before the lockdown started, but the staff seemed very kind and compassionate.

My dad transferred to Ty Penrhos in August from another dementia care home as his condition had deteriorated and he now required nursing care. Due to the coronavirus restrictions, we were unable to previsit the home but soon realised what a great choice we had made. The excellent staff made sure we
were kept well informed with how he was settling in and the few phone calls/outdoor visits we had with my dad confirmed how well he was being looked after. He sadly became very poorly within weeks and I cannot praise the clinical lead nurse and her nursing and care staff high enough. Their professionalism, compassion and end of life support helped us as a family cope with the very difficult and upsetting time as he sadly passed away. The staff are genuinely caring for the residents and treat them with respect. The home is purpose-built, rooms are spacious and everywhere is kept lovely and clean. Would recommend this home to anyone looking for a care home for their loved one.

Mum’s dementia had deteriorated at the beginning of the year, which led to her transfer from another care home to Ty Penrhos care home. We were immediately impressed with the level of care she received from the staff, along with the compassion shown during a significant dip in her behaviour. Unfortunately
before mum was able to really settle in, Covid 19 hit all care homes and we were unable to visit her. Our family throughout this time have been reassured with all aspects of her care, from the excellent communication with staff to the activities team who have worked so hard to keep families in touch and the level of care and wellbeing for all residents. We can highly recommend this care home and the management involved in the running of this care home.

My mother resided in the nursing EMI unit for 9 years until her recent passing. I cannot praise the unit highly enough. She was so well taken care of and so well cared for, I was fortunate enough to not have to worry about her whilst she was there. It is obvious that the nurses and carers are devoted
to their jobs and genuinely care for the residents that they support. My experience of staff end of life support is that they are equally sensitive to the needs of residents and family members. I would have no hesitation in recommending this home to anyone looking for suitable accommodation for their loved ones.

This is the second care home that dad has been in. This meets his needs from all aspects. The staff are very helpful and friendly and management/lead staff are always approachable.


It is always welcoming and feels like dads home. Everyone works as a team and carry out tasks as they need doing.

My Dad moved into this Home approximately two months ago. All the staff there are very kind, caring and understanding. They are also extremely knowledgeable and have always treated Dad with the utmost respect. They also liaise closely with the doctors' surgery nearby and will organise transport to the
local hospitals if necessary as well as communicating regularly with family members.
The building itself and Dad's room is very clean, tidy, bright and spacious and looks more like a 3 star hotel than a care home!

My husband has the most excellent care I could have imagined. He is a vegetarian. All his needs are met, even with his diet. He always looks clean, nicely dressed and his clothes are looked after. The care staff are wonderfully caring, thoughtful and happy. There is a lovely atmosphere. Every member
of staff integrates with my husband and all other residents. One of the carers is so hard working and thorough but another is above and beyond all, caring, calm, a real bonus to the residents and staff. Also to visitors - most courteous and professional.

Karen Davis

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2016

Karen has over 33 years of experience working for the NHS in clinical and managerial roles. She has gained vast experience working in the social care sector as a clinical nurse manager and deputy manager and has Diploma in Palliative Care and Management.


Karen has worked at Ty Penrhos Care Home since February 2016, she is registered with both the Nursing & Midwifery Council and Social Care Wales. Karen was made Home Manager in May 2022.


The team at Ty Penrhos is committed to providing a high standard of quality care treating all residents as individuals with compassion, empathy and love, treating them as if they were family.

Karen Johns

Job Title: Deputy manager Joined: 2016

Karen joined Ty Penrhos in July 2016 and has over nine years experience of working in forensic mental health.


She started as a staff nurse providing care for residents with dementia and was promoted to clinical unit lead in August 2020, where she went on to complete her QCF level 5.


Karen was interim deputy manager from March 2021 to January 2022, and was then promoted to the permanent role of deputy manager in 2022.


Karen is a valued member of the Ty Penrhos Team and is well respected by her colleagues, residents and their families.

Job Title: Clinical Lead Nurse

Kate is the clinical lead on one of our dementia communities at Ty Penrhos. She has a vast knowledge of dementia and shares this with her team to enable them to provide person-centred care for each resident who lives in her community.

Alison has worked at Ty Penrhos since 2015 and is the clinical lead for our adults with physical disability (APD) community. This is a complex community which provides care for younger adults. Alison has vast knowledge of providing this specialist care and passes her knowledge on to her team to ensure they receive person-centred care.
