My mother is in good health for her age except for limited hearing and eyesight.

She stays here for a short respite while her carer goes on holiday; so is not a full-time resident. They gave her the same room so it is all familiar to her which is important. It is 3 mins from my home so regular visits are easy.

My friend stayed for 2 weeks respite. He suffers from severe dementia and likes to walk most of the day. La Fontana gives him that luxury. It meant that he slept better and he was also looked after very well. He was clean, tidy and most of all, happy. He was respected by the staff and given delicious food. What a lovely place. Really secure too which is very important.

My mother was admitted to La Fontana, Martock, in September 2019.
She is as content as she could be, given her dementia. The building is perfect for her, with plenty of space for walking about. She needs a lot of stimulation and there are always people to talk to.

In the months leading up to admission, she felt very unsafe and insecure. Now she feels safe and well looked after.

My father was a resident at La Fontana for the last few weeks of his life. He had complicated and demanding needs and the staff met and surpassed the care necessary. From beginning to end my father was treated with respect and compassion and us, his family too. I would have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful team and excellent home.

I visited many care homes in a search to find a suitable home for my husband who is severely affected by dementia and needs care for physical problems as well.

As a family, we are well satisfied with our choice of La Fontana and have found the staff to be understanding of our emotions as well as providing outstanding care for my husband he is comfortable, warm, well fed and looked after as one would look after one's own child.

Overall Experience
My mother and stepfather started living at La Fontana in 2014. In 2015 my stepfather passed. Since then my mother has continued to live at La Fontana, happily. Her room is spacious with large french windows facing outwards, great for visiting family picnics.
I have found all the staff to be diligent, whilst being kind and considerate to residents and welcoming their families. There has been the occasional problem, but when reported, the staff have gone to great lengths to get it sorted, for example, my mother’s room had an unpleasant smell, the room was deep cleaned, the next day when I visited, it was spotless.
I also know that my mother can be aggressive and strong-willed at times, so if she insists on going to bed after lunch, they try to persuade her to sit in the lounge with company but if she insists they are happy to take her. They cater to my mother’s wishes and needs respectfully.

I would like to thank the staff and tell you I can’t recommend La Fontana highly enough.

La Fontana is spacious, clean, light and very secure with an open layout. No stairs or narrow corridors as seen in many other care homes. Since my mother has been a resident, our family is happy in the knowledge that she is safe and well cared for when we leave her. Carers treat residents kindly and with dignity. Staff and particularly management are approachable and deal with any concerns or issues that have arisen. On the downside, I feel stimulation and conversation between staff and residents is sadly lacking.

On 22nd October I visited my mother at 4 pm. She was sat on her own in the dining area and was unhappy. I took her to her room. She requested to go to the toilet so I asked a carer to take her which she did promptly. I chatted to Mum, made her coffee which improved her mood. I had noticed she was looking thinner but when she asked to go to the toilet again, I took her and was surprised to find that the waist on her skirt was inches too big for her. She had been changed about an hour before I found that she still smelt unpleasantly of stale urine. She was not wearing her glasses nor her hearing aid which I couldn't find. The staff didn't know where they were either. Her friend who is unwell at present was sat in the lounge also without his glasses which he normally wears at all times.

I will buy Mum some new clothes, alter some of her other ones. I bought Mum some new pants but the washing has melted the stitching around the waist of them. I have bought them home to repair.

My father has been a resident at La Fontana for over 2 years now. The home cares for the most difficult and challenging cases of dementia and does an extremely good job under very difficult circumstances. My father is safe and cared for - perhaps not in the same way as if he was able to be at home, but sadly this is not possible, and so we are satisfied that this is the next best option.

The home is kept clean and tidy and the food is of a good standard. They have looked after my Dads needs well, he is settled and calm in his environment which is as much as we could have hoped for.

Generally, everything runs well. My only concern is lack of staff to cover breaks and in my personal opinion, this leaves residents at some risk during these times if remaining staff are providing care in a room for a resident. It leaves the floor unattended. However, on the many times, I've raised this point, I'm told the staffing levels meet legal requirements so I guess there will be no change. Overall, I'm very happy with the level of care.

My mother has been at La Fontana since 2013.

She is currently in a vegetative state sadly and so need optimum care and support. I cannot praise La Fontana enough. For their exemplary care for my mother. They know her well being incredible and any change to her health is reported immediately to GP and family. Security is amazing as are all the staff, every single member. Somerset is very lucky to have this home serving the area.

Generally excellent. Staff are wonderful and do their very best. I have raised this point many times that there are not enough staff in each unit to cover breaks etc. In my view, it leaves a dangerous shortage that if two staff are providing personal care to a resident the others are unsupervised - potentially at risk. I am always informed the home meets "the legal requirement" of staff.

Since visiting my husband for the past three years or so, I can confirm that the residence is always kept clean - no smells. The staff are caring and in general, the majority are excellent. This is a very demanding job where patience and dignity are observed. Carers also support a relative visiting who may be quite upset to see one's loved one with dementia.

My husband found the fact upsetting that other residents would help themselves to his belongings! He has been reasonably content (given his personal problems). He loves the food and has shown, at last, contentment with his surroundings. Have had big problems with clothes either going missing or being replaced with something that is not his!
