My care here is extremely good in every possible way. Every member of the team are very helpful, regardless of their speciality. All the facilities are very good and improving. This is not my only experience of a care home, my husband lived in one for 13 months.

Although my friend has alzhiemers she has only short term memory loss and is otherwise relatively physically fit. This was taken into consideration by the staff and she was accommodated amongst the 'normal' elderly rather than those with dementia. Consequently it is reassuring for friends and family
to know that residents are treated as individuals and their needs aare met arrordingly.

I would like more food at lunch time as all my life I have had my main meal at lunchtime. The staff are always friendly and helpful. I like the visits from the petting dog. I think training for all staff is needed for the putting on of convenes at night.
Reply from Mark McDonald, General Manager at Hallmark Bucklesham GrangeThank you for your review of Bucklesham Grange. We welcome all feedback and always use this to improve the quality of the home further. We have assured John and his family that he can have as much food as he likes. As his preference is for his main meal to be at lunchtime, larger portion sizes have been provided from the menu options as per his wishes.
Training for all our care team is ongoing for individual needs. I am pleased that you have found the team always friendly and polite as we always strive for high quality care.

On walking through the front doors there is an immediate "quality" feel about the place, coffee lounge always seems to have residents in it having a good natter and there are always staff on hand to say hello. Rooms are comfortable looking, obvious that the company have tried to recreate home for the
residents instead of creating just another residential home. Corridors again give it that welcome feel and always staff and residents moving around the place, everyone takes the time to say hello or at least acknowledge you. I think the big difference here are the staff who are great, I've only met one or two of the management but they really seem to care about being the best that they can.

My mother has been in hospital, followed by 2 weeks convalescence. We therefore only had a very short time to find her accommodation as she's decided not to return to her bungalow. The staff at Bucklesham Grange were very helpful and approachable and offered very good friendly advice in an unhurried
way.
The setting, layout and general first impression on seeing the care home was excellent. All the staff seemed very friendly. Since moving in, mum has felt valued and welcomed with good care, love and now feels very settled. The food is excellent.
Within a few says, her physical condition and well-being improved significantly. Bucklesham Grange have a great deal of freedom in setting up financial arrangements.

During this month, the home has been trying to improve communication with the residents families and friends by instigating a series of meeting with the management. These have been arranged at varying days and times in an attempt to make them accessible to everyone. I feel that these have been very
useful and allowed us to express feedback and concerns. We are waiting the appointment of two new managers but the team is being led by an interim manager he is doing a great job. I am very impressed with the staff who care for my mother and the facilities at the home.

My step mother is very happy and that is the main criterion. I think there has been a slight "lowering of the bar" in recent months. The little extras which we used to notice such as the events schedule in the Bistro which kept us informed as to "outings" etc. seems to be missing. Has been a reduction
in staff to resident ratio? There seems to be less staff in evidence in recent months.
Reply from Helene Scwabe-Magill, Marketing Coordinator at Hallmark Bucklesham GrangeThank you for your feedback and comments. We are glad to hear your step mother is happy, that too is our main priority. We have a board in our reception which displays all weekly planned activities, this is also circulated in the bistro and copies are available for each resident, we will endeavour to ensure more printed copies are available so they are not missed. We have increased our team ratios and are glad to say we have recently recruited new team members.

People often seem to be shocked by the cost of residential care and, indeed, the monthly bill for both my parents-in-law at Bucklesham Grange does look pretty daunting - on first sight. But considering things more carefully, it begins to look like a bit of a bargain when Bucklesham Grange is viewed
as a 'special' hotel, which given the overall standard is an entirely valid comparison.
Firstly, three-star (at least) hotel standard accommodation in immaculately kept and cleaned modern surroundings. Full-board food and drink (alcoholic if desired), to a similar standard, served in very smart dining rooms or as 'room service', plus plenty of extras in the form of cakes, coffees ect available in the excellent bistro (these are for visitors too!).
A full professional hair salon, with regular manicure and pedicure service. Beautifully kept gardens to sit in or stroll in, and a packed programme of activities (real, not half hearted 'lip service' attempt). It's worth noting that all of the above is inclusive - no nasty 'extras'.
Finally, and ultimately most importantly of course, 24/7 individual care provided to the highest possible standards of professionalism, friendliness, diligence and dignity. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for the Bucklesham Grange team, and we are all very pleased to have found such an ideal place.

My mother has received great care form all at Bucklesham Grange in all but one area: Personal hygiene. She is allowed to wear the same clothes day in day out with no attempt or persuasion/suggestion for her to change them. She is also still allowed to shower herself because she gets up before 7am.
The clothes changing is not just her, my dad has been in the home since September and despite our being told his clothes will be washed every day he still appears to wear the same stuff daily.

The decision to move my Auntie from her home to a care home was very difficult for us, even more so because we live in Canada. During one of my visits to the UK, I spent a few weeks touring, not castles and art galleries, but Care Homes for the elderly. It was discouraging until we found Bucklesham
Grange. Although the wait list was long, we decided it was worthwhile to wait until a room became available. Now, I know we made the right decision. Because of the distance, I only see my auntie a couple of times a year, but the staff at Bucklesham send me monthly emails about her physical and mental health and her activities. When I do see her in person, she is happy and healthy. Her room is lovely and clean and opens onto a garden full of flowers and birds. She has her hair done weekly and is involved in a myriad of activities that reflect her interests in life. The staff are very caring and treat her with the dignity she deserves. I've had meals with her at the Grange and they are thoughtfully prepared and not at all what I would have expected from Care Home menus. In short, I am confident that we made the right decision in a difficult time and my auntie's quality of life is much better now that she is surrounded by people who care about her. Although I am an ocean away, I no longer worry about my auntie's safety and security, and most of all, I know that she continues to live an engaged life.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.675)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.675) out of 10 for Hallmark Bucklesham Grange is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.700 for Hallmark Bucklesham Grange is calculated as follows: ( (192 Excellents x 5) + (32 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 237 Ratings = 4.7
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hallmark Bucklesham Grange is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 57 registered maximum number of service users is 11.4, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
