My mother has been a resident in St Margaret's for three years now. Although she has dementia, she has retained her individuality and her joyful nature. This, I believe, is down to the loving care and professionalism of the excellent staff at St Margaret's and also the nurturing environment there. My
family and I have great peace of mind knowing that my mother is in such caring hands.
Reply from Harriet Sharland, Marketing Administrator at St Margaret's Care HomeThank you, P R, we always appreciate individuals taking the time to give their feedback and we are very pleased to hear that your mother's experience at St Margaret's Care Home is so positive. All of our team are committed to providing the best possible care experience for all of our residents and it is very rewarding to have their efforts recognised.

Overall Experience 3.0 out of 5
The staff I have talked to and met are all very pleasant, professional and caring. But, they are so very understaffed, seriously so. To speak to my cousin I sometimes have to call as many as six times to get an answer, and even then, I'm likely asked to call back in 30 minutes. Even worse than that,
the mobile phone that is used is horrendously crackly, and, more often than not, of a 20-minute conversation, will only be able to understand 6 maybe 10 minutes max. It is so frustrating and, for an older, frail person who suffers from dementia, it must really be exasperating. I have complained for many months about this and keep being told that they're looking into it. But, both my brother and I continue to experience this every time we call. As I told management, were my cousin not so frail, I would have no hesitation in recommending she be moved to a council home. Since my wife works in a council home and has told me that service is much better there.
Reply from Katie Barnett, Marketing Executive at St Margaret's Care HomeThank you, Gordon, for taking the time to give feedback and for your kind words about the team. In regards to concerns about our team levels, we are continuing with ongoing recruitment. For now, we conduct regular assessments of our residents' needs and use consideration of how the team are deployed, ensuring that residents' needs are met with safe team levels at all times. We apologise that you have experienced line interference in the home and we understand that this is not ideal. This is something we are aware of and have tried to resolve many times. We have had the lines assessed with no problems flagging up. The Home Manager has previously discussed different options with you to resolve this going forward and has explained the situation. She is happy to discuss your concerns in more detail on your next visit to the home or over the phone. Thank you again and we look forward to hearing from you.

What a fantastic care home. Ever since I got in touch to arrange for my mum to come in, the whole team has been truly amazing. Mum is very happy and has settled in quickly. When I visited her today, she had on a big smile and spoke positively about all the help she is getting, plus the choice and quality
of the food and daily activities.
I have met or spoken with a lot of people at the home so far in helping Mum out. Each and everyone has been very kind, compassionate and professional. They are all a great credit to St Margarets and the work, of caring for our loved ones. I cannot thank you enough.

It was a great comfort to see the kindness and attentive care provided to my friend during her time at St Margaret's.
In the most difficult of circumstances and under many pressures caused by the pandemic, staff continued to give their best and to put their residents' needs first.
I was heartened
to observe the genuine respect and consideration shown and to know that important and meaningful bonds had been established at a time when visits were not possible or difficult to manage. It was clear that the standards of personal care were high. The food looked and smelled appetising, and my friend regularly liked to spend time in the lounge with other residents or in the garden when she was able.
As a visitor, I always received a warm welcome from reception, care and nursing staff and was grateful to witness the practical and tender palliative care offered at end of life.

The care my mother has had has been quite extraordinary whilst at St Margaret's. Loving, kindly attentive and caring - even in the most challenging of circumstances. She has been there for the last seven years. Her behaviour can be difficult, but the staff have been loving and tolerant and shown the
patience of saints frankly. I live in London and the last year during Covid has been particularly cruel and difficult. In my absence of being able to visit, I have felt comforted by the compassion and care shown to my mother, who is coming up to 92 has defied all expectations of her life span - and I believe this is in no small part because of the way she has been looked after and nourished. All I can say is a simple but heartfelt thank you! Truly.

My mother has been in the care home now for almost two weeks, 12 days to be specific therefore isolation will be completed on Thursday. Mum has a lovely room, very clean and spacious and not short of the carers taking their time to spend time with Mum in her room throughout the long days of isolation.
I am excited for Mum to now be introduced to the rest of the residents and staff. Judging by recent photos on the website there are countless activities. I would also like to add, the activity team are brilliant, you email for a slot for zoom, it is literally booked for the same say within minutes of you submitting the email.

Thanks to the staff for keeping a smile on my grandad's face. It’s been a hard year not getting to see my grandad, but thankfully the staff have managed to keep my family in contact with my grandad through zoom calls, and their fantastic Facebook page. All the residents and staff look like they are

My Mum was admitted to St Margaret’s in September during COVID. Understandably, we could not be with her which made the experience quite traumatic for us all. However, I have been delighted to see how she has been cared for and the activities staff go out their way to keep everyone entertained. A Facebook
page is now available so we can see what the residents get up to and this is so heartwarming to see. Zoom calls keep us in touch until visiting can be brought back but at least Mum can see us and us her. In these strange times, I can’t thank all the staff at St Margaret’s enough - the receptionists, the care staff, entertainments staff, cleaners, kitchen staff and laundry. Every one of them goes out of their way to keep relatives safe and happy and we all owe you so much. Hopefully, there will come a time when we can thank you in person and come in and assist in the care of our relatives to give you all a well-deserved break. From my heart, I thank you all.

My gran has been in care at St Margaret’s for a good part of a year now and I can not thank all the staff enough at St Margaret’s for all the care they have given to my gran, they have been excellent support during the Covid outbreak, keeping our family well informed of how my gran was getting on, even
though we know they were facing challenges within the home, whenever I call the staff are encouraging and positive. The new Facebook page is a wonderful source of information and a way to see how my gran spends her time, not to mention the activity staff taking the time to arrange a Zoom call to see my gran, just seeing my gran on the screen helps ease the fact we have not seen each other for what seems like forever. A huge thank you to everyone.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.949)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.949) out of 10 for St Margaret's Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.949 for St Margaret's Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (319 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 336 Ratings = 4.949
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Margaret's Care Home is based on 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 28 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2019

What is your professional background?

I began nursing in 2010, where I worked in various areas of the NHS before moving over into the care home sector. Studying an MSc in the Health and Well-being of Older People gave me the skills and confidence to dedicate my career to this client group- an area I dearly love. I have previously held posts in Clinical Lead, Deputy Home Managers and Head of Care Lead Nurse positions while continuing to work for a local agency in supporting the NHS, Marie Curie and St Columba's Hospices. I have experience in General Surgery, Renal and GI, Gynaecology, Medical Assessment Unit, Cardiac High Dependency, Medicine of the Elderly and Palliative Care.

As well as being a home manager, you are also a registered nurse. Why did you first get into nursing?

Nursing found me. Following personal challenges in my own life, I found that my empathy and compassion for people developed and the need to help others became my focus. It's a phenomenal responsibility being a Nurse, and I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity.

What one thing do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the challenge of being a new Home Manager and the fast-paced, ever-changing environment that is care. The position I am in allows me to see care delivery from all angles while building a service that is true to the needs of the individual.

What was a defining moment for you?

Providing palliative care to a 34-year-old lady with stomach cancer. At the time I cared for her, she had a son the same age as mine and had been diagnosed 2 weeks before her death. I learnt that day the importance of living in the moment and being thankful for my family and son. You can't dictate the future, but you can enjoy the present.?

What interests you outside of work?

I am a huge sports fan with special interests in rugby and football. Manchester United is where my heart will always be. I also enjoy walking with my dogs and spending time with my 5-year-old son. I also enjoy watching movies, especially Sci-fi and thrillers, as well as listening regularly to music. I have a personal interest in German history and sport.
