I want to take this opportunity to thank the amazing night nurse & her team for the exceptional care my husband received when he became unwell.
I received a phone call to say that he was unwell & waiting on an ambulance.
The nurse was great. So calm, caring, and reassuring. I really felt that
she genuinely cared.
He was admitted to the hospital and spent 4 days there. I brought him back to Cumbrae Lodge today after he was discharged.
Again the welcome he got was lovely.
The lovely carers got him settled back in.
My husband said he was happy to be back among his carers & Nurses in Islay.
He has settled back in well. His room was all cosy & warm, water all in place for his return.
Thank you all again. You are a great bunch who do an amazing Job of caring from the heart. I will sleep well knowing he's back in your care.
Reply from Lee gove, Home Manager at Cumbrae Lodge Care HomeCan i respond by saying that this heart warming review is much appreciated. I am glad that you feel that your husband is well cared for. Guthrie House Care Home

from Lucinda B (Daughter of Resident) published on 20 January 2026
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My dad was moved in to care after a decline in his condition with Alzheimer's disease. He lost mobility, pieces of his memories (thankfully not of us), and his character.
The care he received in Guthrie House was, truly, outstanding. The staff genuinely cared. They took an interest in him, remembered
things about him, and us - our names and relationships. They brushed crumbs off his lap and tidied his hair. They sat with him and listened, and were patient and kind when he could be challenging or angry. They went on excursions, and flagged if they had concerns about his health.
When he declined further, they gave us space and privacy to be with him - offered us food, cups of tea, and hugs. When he passed away, he was cared for with respect, love and care. They recommended a Funeral Director with whom we had an amazing experience. Some of the staff came to his funeral.
Thanking them all for making a truly traumatic and heartbreaking period of our lives so much more bearable.

Dad moved into the care home in October 2025, it took about a month to settle in properly and he is starting to enjoy his new home. He is very happy with the services provided, i.e. staff are all nice. His room is lovely, plenty of activities to get involved in. The food is superb, everything is homemade,

My wife is 79 years old and she has dementia. Eight months after leaving home she was transferred to Gilmerton Care Home (G.H.C) I am in my mid eighties but I have managed to visit her almost daily. I think that the attitude and competence of the staff is, by far, the most important factor and, here,
G.C.H is superb. Without exception they have been patient and caring for an eccentric, and often confused and cantankerous old lady. After just a few weeks my wife looks the picture of health. She tells me she likes the staff and that they are kind to her. I can see that she is clean and does not have B.O. She is difficult to feed but they manage. I worried about her long term care. You hear such awful tales but I am very pleased with G.C.H and what they do for her.

It's been nearly 4 months since my partner was admitted to Gilmerton Neurological Centre. He has came on very well in the time he has been there. ALL staff are great with him and understand that he is younger and may not be as interested in all the activities but they like to keep him involved. I have
every hope that they will manage to get him to a place where he will be able to come home. I just hope they have the mini bus back soon so there was more outside therapies. Although that hasn't stopped them taking them on little outings and out over the festive period.
Reply from Catherine Forrest-Smith, Deputy Manager at Gilmerton Neurological Care CentreThank you for your feedback. We are very happy to work with you and your family to get your loved one in a place where he can return home with his family, hopefully his rehabilitation keeps progressing to the level of expectations

Mum has only been in Cumbrae Lodge for 4 weeks from a long stay in hospital, but what a difference they have made ! From bed bound + completely dependant, mum is up in day room every day, having walked with support + showing a massive increase in independant eating+ drinking. Staff have shown mum
+ myself such kindness, + given me great confidence in their care in the way they have quickly picked up on mums needs + habits, ( mum is mostly non verbal) .
