All the criteria, food, cleanliness etc are important and Gilmerton Care Home merits at least 'good' for them all. My wife has dementia and by far the most important factor both is that she is treated with respect as a sentient human being. She needs understanding and compassion for her shortcomings.
All the staff at the home understand this and I can rest assured that she is clean and comfortable and respected. I ask her every day if people are nice to her. I marvel at how her carers cope. I am 85 and like Robert Burns' ti a mouse am aprehensive about my future. If I do need care I hope it is in somewhere like Gilmerton Care Home.

My mum was placed in Gilmerton a month ago. She has mixed dementia, is relative immobile and registered blind. This was an incredibly tricky move/placement for mum but has been made all the easier by the wonderful staff in the Churchill unit. Mum is slowly growing in confidence and is relatively content.
The staff have been patient and understanding.

Dad moved into the care home in October 2025, it took about a month to settle in properly and he is starting to enjoy his new home. He is very happy with the services provided, i.e. staff are all nice. His room is lovely, plenty of activities to get involved in. The food is superb, everything is homemade,
etc. Us as a family could not be happier. Gilmerton Care Home as a full package is superb and gives us peace of mind he's getting well looked after from start to finish. This gives us great peace of mind. Thanks to you all.

My Mother has been in the care home for over 5yrs and I have always found the staff excellent, the service they provide has been of a level that has allowed me to relax from almost the first week, I was very nervous when my Mother went in but the interactions with them and my viewing of the work they
do under difficult circumstances has gave me high level of respect for them and the work they do.

Having worked in care myself I'm incredibly pleased with the care and support both my father and myself receive from the whole team here.
I would highly recommend Gilmerton to anyone.
My father's been happy here from day one, and I've seen first hand just how gently, patiently, and well the whole
team cares for him and other residents.
Everything is always clean and organised, he loves the food, adores the staff, and enjoys regular activities and trips out.
I'm always met with a warm reception from the team, and I'm regularly and appropriately updated on everything as well.
For the first time in years I have genuine peace of mind and I honestly couldn't wish for a better home and people to keep him happy, healthy, and safe.

My wife will have been in the home for 6 years on the 19th August. It is a brilliant home from the minute you walk in the door. The girls in reception always speak and ask how you are then there is the staff how are extra special they have a very low turn=over so everyone knows everybodys needs. I am
often asked how my wife is and say I could not have a better home. I go to bed at night and dont worry. I know she is being well looked after.

My father moved into Gilmerton Care Home in November 2024 for long term care. All the care givers have been great. There is great communication with myself between the 2 nurses on my dad's wing (Gladstone).
It's taking my dad a while to settle in as it's a massive change for him, but everyone is being
very understanding and contacting me when he is upset and needs to talk to me.
I'm very happy with the care my dad is getting and find all the staff very easy to approach if I have any questions.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.741)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.741) out of 10 for Gilmerton Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.741 for Gilmerton Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (237 Excellents x 5) + (64 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 309 Ratings = 4.741
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Gilmerton Care Home is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
