My sister has been a resident in the Churchill Unit at Gilmerton Care Home for now the past 3 years and our family's experience has been outstanding. Every family member who visits very consistently, says now highly they would recommend the care provided here. The staff are exceptionally kind, professional,
and welcoming, making each visit feel like coming into our own home. My sister is safe, happy and very well cared for which gives us great peace of mind. The environment is always clean and well maintained and the warmth, respect and compassion is shown to both residents and families, is truly commendable. I would confidently recommend Gilmerton Care Home to anyone seeking excellent care.

Guthrie House Care Home

from Lucinda B (Daughter of Resident) published on 20 January 2026

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My dad was moved in to care after a decline in his condition with Alzheimer's disease. He lost mobility, pieces of his memories (thankfully not of us), and his character.
The care he received in Guthrie House was, truly, outstanding. The staff genuinely cared. They took an interest in him, remembered
things about him, and us - our names and relationships. They brushed crumbs off his lap and tidied his hair. They sat with him and listened, and were patient and kind when he could be challenging or angry. They went on excursions, and flagged if they had concerns about his health.
When he declined further, they gave us space and privacy to be with him - offered us food, cups of tea, and hugs. When he passed away, he was cared for with respect, love and care. They recommended a Funeral Director with whom we had an amazing experience. Some of the staff came to his funeral.
Thanking them all for making a truly traumatic and heartbreaking period of our lives so much more bearable.
Reply from Shirley Ramsay, Nursing Home manager at Guthrie House Care HomeDear Lucinda
Thank you so much for your lovely review of Guthrie house and the teams care and compassion towards dad and your family during his stay with us and during the end of his life. We were all incredibly fond of dad , he brought smiles laughter and shared some wonderful stories and a good bit of cheek . Sending heartfelt thoughts to you and your beautiful family
Kindest Regards
Shirley

Dad moved into the care home in October 2025, it took about a month to settle in properly and he is starting to enjoy his new home. He is very happy with the services provided, i.e. staff are all nice. His room is lovely, plenty of activities to get involved in. The food is superb, everything is homemade,
etc. Us as a family could not be happier. Gilmerton Care Home as a full package is superb and gives us peace of mind he's getting well looked after from start to finish. This gives us great peace of mind. Thanks to you all.

My wife is 79 years old and she has dementia. Eight months after leaving home she was transferred to Gilmerton Care Home (G.H.C) I am in my mid eighties but I have managed to visit her almost daily. I think that the attitude and competence of the staff is, by far, the most important factor and, here,
G.C.H is superb. Without exception they have been patient and caring for an eccentric, and often confused and cantankerous old lady. After just a few weeks my wife looks the picture of health. She tells me she likes the staff and that they are kind to her. I can see that she is clean and does not have B.O. She is difficult to feed but they manage. I worried about her long term care. You hear such awful tales but I am very pleased with G.C.H and what they do for her.

It's been nearly 4 months since my partner was admitted to Gilmerton Neurological Centre. He has came on very well in the time he has been there. ALL staff are great with him and understand that he is younger and may not be as interested in all the activities but they like to keep him involved. I have
every hope that they will manage to get him to a place where he will be able to come home. I just hope they have the mini bus back soon so there was more outside therapies. Although that hasn't stopped them taking them on little outings and out over the festive period.
Reply from Catherine Forrest-Smith, Deputy Manager at Gilmerton Neurological Care CentreThank you for your feedback. We are very happy to work with you and your family to get your loved one in a place where he can return home with his family, hopefully his rehabilitation keeps progressing to the level of expectations

My Mother has been in the care home for over 5yrs and I have always found the staff excellent, the service they provide has been of a level that has allowed me to relax from almost the first week, I was very nervous when my Mother went in but the interactions with them and my viewing of the work they
do under difficult circumstances has gave me high level of respect for them and the work they do.

My wife celebrated her birthday last week on 2 separate days as our family were not all available at once .
Amazingly this was not a problem for your staff who pulled out all the stops to decorate her room and the lounge and made such a fuss of her and a warm welcome for all of us.Many thanks to all
the staff for their love and care.I would like to make special mention of Sharon , if I may , as she tirelessly goes above and beyond mere duty with her patient compassionate care.We are so lucky with your choice of staff , thank you.

I do appreciate the care my beloved husband Patrick receives and I know how much he needs it, but although his powers of communication are slow, I always feel that there should be more activities especially at the weekends. Also if a resident requires physical assistance such as cleaning spectacles,
they he must have access to them at anytime he is awake, there was an incident last month. The problem is now resolved.
Reply from Liz Cass, Home Manager at Colinton Care HomeThank you for your review and your kind comments on the care we provide your husband. My friend for ever 55 years moved into St Margaret's in December 2024. During this entire time, he has received first class care across all aspects of his package in the care home.
All his POA, I have been well informed and treated with the same high level of respect that my friend has had.
I have
complete confidence in the staff and would highly recommend St Margaret's to others seeking quality care.
