All the staff are fantastic and go over and above to make my Grandma happy. Always keeping us updated via the private Facebook group page with photos and videos. We love how accommodating they have been for setting up zoom/facetime calls. Thanks again.

My mother has been in the care home now for almost two weeks, 12 days to be specific therefore isolation will be completed on Thursday. Mum has a lovely room, very clean and spacious and not short of the carers taking their time to spend time with Mum in her room throughout the long days of isolation. I am excited for Mum to now be introduced to the rest of the residents and staff. Judging by recent photos on the website there are countless activities. I would also like to add, the activity team are brilliant, you email for a slot for zoom, it is literally booked for the same say within minutes of you submitting the email.

Thanks to the staff for keeping a smile on my grandad's face. It’s been a hard year not getting to see my grandad, but thankfully the staff have managed to keep my family in contact with my grandad through zoom calls, and their fantastic Facebook page. All the residents and staff look like they are having a great time and keeping us updated with photos of my grandad looking well and happy.

My Mum was admitted to St Margaret’s in September during COVID. Understandably, we could not be with her which made the experience quite traumatic for us all. However, I have been delighted to see how she has been cared for and the activities staff go out their way to keep everyone entertained. A Facebook page is now available so we can see what the residents get up to and this is so heartwarming to see. Zoom calls keep us in touch until visiting can be brought back but at least Mum can see us and us her. In these strange times, I can’t thank all the staff at St Margaret’s enough - the receptionists, the care staff, entertainments staff, cleaners, kitchen staff and laundry. Every one of them goes out of their way to keep relatives safe and happy and we all owe you so much. Hopefully, there will come a time when we can thank you in person and come in and assist in the care of our relatives to give you all a well-deserved break. From my heart, I thank you all.

My gran has been in care at St Margaret’s for a good part of a year now and I can not thank all the staff enough at St Margaret’s for all the care they have given to my gran, they have been excellent support during the Covid outbreak, keeping our family well informed of how my gran was getting on, even though we know they were facing challenges within the home, whenever I call the staff are encouraging and positive. The new Facebook page is a wonderful source of information and a way to see how my gran spends her time, not to mention the activity staff taking the time to arrange a Zoom call to see my gran, just seeing my gran on the screen helps ease the fact we have not seen each other for what seems like forever. A huge thank you to everyone.

I would have found it difficult to rate St Margaret's prior to the set up of the Facebook page, as my dad was admitted on March the 20th this year just as lockdown started, but the new page has given us an insight to life in St Margaret's and has definitely helped us get through these tough times.

My mother was a resident at St Margaret's from October 2018. During this time she was amazingly well cared for and the team were just fantastic. Their communication was great and we knew she was happy. Sadly she passed away in May of this year.
I felt utterly compelled to write a letter of thanks to the entire team who at this difficult time with a pandemic have continued to strive to provide the very best level of care they can and how amazing they are to turn up day after day to face the challenges that are presented in this situation. We must all rally around all the staff and recognise that they are working amazingly hard in the most challenging of circumstances and are protecting the residents to the very best level that they can.
We all have a duty to support these amazing people and to recognise and support the challenging decisions made to protect the residents.

Please support the staff, recognise their efforts and be kind to them all.

I would like to let you know how grateful we are that we were able to visit our dad yesterday after so many weeks and to find him looking so well. We can only imagine the additional stress you and your staff have been working under in your battle with COVID-19 in the home and we can only try to say how much we are sincerely grateful for the care and kindness you continue to deliver and how much we respect you and the staff to continue working under these conditions. It must be so difficult for any staff members who have tested positive for COVID-19 and potentially harbour feelings of guilt thinking they may have been a carrier of this into the home whilst being asymptotic. We would like to state that they should feel no guilt for turning up to work, as they had no control over this due to a lack of appropriate testing. We hope you and your staff are all able to find some time to ‘switch off’, relax and make time for yourselves - you all deserve that so much.

My grandmother has been living at St Margaret’s since the end of December and as much as she didn’t want to go into care, the welcome the team provided was exceptional. I know recently that times have been challenging and I have not been able to pop in for a cuddle, nonetheless, I know through the regular updates received from the staff, they have given the best care I could have asked for. Nothing will show the amount of gratitude I have for St Margaret’s and each and every one of the team. The regular updates have given much peace of mind to our family so thank you for everything you do. Hopefully, see you all soon.

My family and I cannot thank all the staff enough for the care they have given my father especially during Covid, they work very hard to provide individual care to all the residents. I am so grateful he survived the virus. The staff have been very good at updating us about his condition.

It is so important for residents to have contact with their families. We are a very close family and it has certainly helped my father and us to be able to visit him through the window.

My mum has been a resident at St Margaret’s for over six months now. The care she has received has been excellent. Everyone is so friendly, welcoming, kind and professional. There are lots of fun activities and trips out. The home is spotless. The food is good and plentiful, so much so that my Mum has gone up a clothes size. My mum has really settled into her new home and very happy.

What a lovely home this is. St Margaret's has been very welcoming with all members of staff giving a happy smile and saying hello when I visit. They have been very receptive to any concerns raised and have dealt with them in a timely and professional manner. It is a great comfort knowing my dear friend is being so well looked after and enjoys her regular outings to the shops. Settled in well and so peaceful.

My aunt and uncle stayed here for almost a year and then due to their increasing health problems we were asked to find alternative care when both of them were barely out of hospital. We had selected the home to cover nursing needs but it seems that this was an issue. I found that the manager was showing their room to possible new tenants before we had even secured alternative accommodation for them. I acknowledge my aunt was not an easy lady to look after however I was greatly disappointed in the managerial staff and some of the auxiliary staff. The nursing staff were extremely supportive and some of the auxiliary staff were also very kind and caring.

We are thrilled to hear that you feel our nursing team are supportive, kind and caring.

When we can no longer provide the level of care that the resident needs we try to encourage the resident to find alternative care that is better suited for their current needs. In a change like this, we always...

My wife and I were impressed by the friendly and caring staff. They have an extremely difficult job and showed compassion for the residents in the particular surroundings in which we were. The staff seem talented in many ways and actually showed a desire to locate outings to visit for the residents even though logistics might be difficult.

Kate Martin
Kate MartinJob Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2019

What is your professional background?

I began nursing in 2010, where I worked in various areas of the NHS before moving over into the care home sector. Studying an MSc in the Health and Well-being of Older People gave me the skills and confidence to dedicate my career to this client group- an area I dearly love. I have previously held posts in Clinical Lead, Deputy Home Managers and Head of Care Lead Nurse positions while continuing to work for a local agency in supporting the NHS, Marie Curie and St Columba's Hospices. I have experience in General Surgery, Renal and GI, Gynaecology, Medical Assessment Unit, Cardiac High Dependency, Medicine of the Elderly and Palliative Care.

As well as being a home manager, you are also a registered nurse. Why did you first get into nursing?

Nursing found me. Following personal challenges in my own life, I found that my empathy and compassion for people developed and the need to help others became my focus. It's a phenomenal responsibility being a Nurse, and I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity.

What one thing do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the challenge of being a new Home Manager and the fast-paced, ever-changing environment that is care. The position I am in allows me to see care delivery from all angles while building a service that is true to the needs of the individual.

What was a defining moment for you?

Providing palliative care to a 34-year-old lady with stomach cancer. At the time I cared for her, she had a son the same age as mine and had been diagnosed 2 weeks before her death. I learnt that day the importance of living in the moment and being thankful for my family and son. You can't dictate the future, but you can enjoy the present.?

What interests you outside of work?

I am a huge sports fan with special interests in rugby and football. Manchester United is where my heart will always be. I also enjoy walking with my dogs and spending time with my 5-year-old son. I also enjoy watching movies, especially Sci-fi and thrillers, as well as listening regularly to music. I have a personal interest in German history and sport.
