Cleanliness was a problem at first with hair and teeth not being cleaned. however, it is now much better. All the staff are friendly and Mum is happy here.

Dean Wood is an amazing Care Home. It has been nice and warm. the staff are amazing. The food is wonderful with plenty of refreshments and cake etc. The activities certainly keep the residents busy. The whole place is spotlessly clean and tidy and the rooms and facilities are like a top hotel. Carry
on Dean Wood. Would recommend it to anyone.

No hesitation in recommending this home. They looked after my dad for 2 years until his passing and always treated him with respect, care and love. They are very good at dealing with dementia and an all-around excellent place.

This review is about the final time of my mother at Dean Wood Care Home. They did such a wonderful job of keeping me in touch with my mother's changing condition. When I arrived, they had made the room so ready for her last hours - the care of each of the staff popping in to check on me was just perfect.
Thank you for giving her, and us, the best kind of situation to end her time.
Reply from Fran Donno, Customer Service Adviser at Dean Wood Care HomeWe really appreciate the time you have taken to leave your review. We are really glad to hear that the staff at Dean Wood were so attentive to yourself and your Mum during a difficult time. Hopefully, you will go away from this feeling like your loved one received the best possible care.

My husband was admitted to Dean Wood and I knew he was happy straight away although very ill. The staff made him very welcome and well looked after. He was always clean and tidy. He enjoyed the meals. I found the staff to be excellent and ready to talk to me. He has passed away now but I'm so pleased
we chose Dean Wood. Thank you to all staff. My husband passed peacefully.

Putting my very sick husband into a care home was a decision I had hoped never even to make as I had considerable concerns regarding care, medical facilities etc. However, within a very short space of time, I felt I could relax regarding these various concerns. I was pleasantly surprised by the very
sympathetic care he received. It became clear that a cheery family atmosphere operated on the ward. Sadly, my husband passed away within two months of admission but I could not fault the care there.
Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at Dean Wood Care HomeThank you for your feedback. We are so sorry for your loss. Hopefully, the excellent care your husband received at Dean Wood made a very difficult time a little easier for you to bear.

Overall, my experience was very good. I enjoyed most meals and the service was good. A major positive for me in wanting to exercise my knee was the rooftop facility. There was also a nice lounge if I wanted a change of scenery inside. Although I was on the residential floor, a large percentage of the
residents had dementia for which the care was focussed, I was surprised some of the carers had not dealt with TEDS before. No ice packs were available and when obtained no freezer on the floor so often had to wait for one. Pleased there was a toilet seat riser. I realise staffing is difficult but two agency workers at night as sometimes happened was not good. Carers' work attitudes varied, 'when the cat was away, mice would play' Communication from management to residents could be improved. Not informed of Covid lockdown.
Reply from David Mclean, Customer Service Adviser at Dean Wood Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are very happy to hear you felt at ease in our care and that you felt there was choice in the scenery and areas of the home you could use, especially the rooftop facility. We will discuss your feedback with the home's manager to help them continually improve their service. Thank you for choosing Dean Wood for your stay.

I would just like to thank all of Dean Wood staff for the excellent care they all provided my nanna during her stay of 7 years. It's not easy as a relative knowing a family member is in a care home but each time I visited it was apparent that Nanna was being looked after and was enjoying, as best she
could, her life with you. She would have her nails and hair done frequently, which made her feel good and staff kept the entertainment going daily, which I know she looked forward to getting involved in.
When it was clear Nanna's passing was imminent, we were so moved by the way the staff dealt with us and her, with respect and dignity. It was also moving to see the amount of staff being upset that Nanna wasn't going to be here much longer. It really showed us that you all really cared.
Thank you also to all of you who organised and served us at Nanna's wake. It was all so lovely. The food, photos, bunting, flowers and generosity spoke volumes as to the calibre of the staff.

Mum spent two weeks in Dean Wood Care Home in July to give us a break. From the start, Bupa was completely professional in providing good advice and support. Mum enjoyed her two weeks holiday and joined in all of the activities and we knew she was safe and cared for. The staff were wonderful. We would
have no hesitation in using Dean Wood again.

My Mum went into Dean Wood Care Home as an alternative to a Hospice for some respite and Pain Management due to her terminal cancer. Straight away she was made to feel at home and the staff were kind and willing to help as much as they could. After a few days, it became obvious that her time was indeed
short and that only Palliative care was appropriate. She was made as comfortable as possible and treated with the utmost dignity and kindness. The staff gave us plenty of privacy and made sure that we knew we could visit at any time and stay with Mum in her room as much as we wanted. On the day that she passed away, we were given every assistance possible and are now so grateful that a time of such sadness for us as a family was made a lot easier by everyone at Dean Wood.
Many heartfelt thanks to all involved in her care.

My mother has been at Dean Wood for 18 months. The room is not clean and I regularly clean her over-the-bed tray which is dirty. Her nails are extremely long and black underneath, I’m having to cut and clean them. Without her main carer, who is excellent, I would remove my mother. She is left in bed
most of the time, and can’t put television on because she does not have the controller with little going on and no stimulation. Very disappointed. I expected to have lunch and maybe tea with my mother but this hasn’t happened.

Mum has been at Dean Wood for just over two years now. It's obviously been an extremely challenging time in many ways for all care homes due to Covid for management, staff, families and residents alike. However, despite that, Mum has continued to receive excellent care, which is no mean feat with somebody
who can often provide her own challenges to receiving care. I will be forever grateful to so many members of staff who are involved in Mum's care and I often feel overwhelmed by the kindness shown to her and its lovely to see how well she gets on with them. I don't think they all realise how much it means and I can't thank them enough. Mum just had her 80th birthday and everybody, especially the activities team, went to so much effort to make it a special day. I won't forget seeing her smiling and singing and lapping up all the attention. The cake made in the kitchens, especially for her, was a work of art. The food seems mostly homemade and her lovely room has a fabulous view!

My mum came to Dean Wood after having a series of bad experiences so was very apprehensive about going into a home. Being an ex care manager I have high expectations of the level of care for my mum. Well, I have to say Dean Wood were caring, empathetic and also listened to my mum and ourselves. They
were very person-centred, I cannot fault them - especially the deputy and nurse.

The home is easy to get to and in a nice position looking over the Downs. I had a nice visit with my friend, the care staff were friendly. I think they were very busy though. I was a bit concerned as my friend seemed a little unkempt and her fingernails were very long but I was assured that they
would put it on the list to cut them.

My dad was fast-tracked to Dean Wood from hospital. Dad was given all the care he needed in a very professional and caring way the nurses were always polite and kept me up to date with how dad was getting on they are all a credit to the home. All the nurses were amazing but I would like to give an extra
shout-out to one of the nurses. My dad has now been discharged and is back at home still a long way to go. If anyone has any worries about a family member being discharged to Dean Wood they will get the best care.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.939)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.939) out of 10 for Dean Wood Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 32 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.939 for Dean Wood Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (357 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 376 Ratings = 4.939
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Dean Wood Care Home is based on 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 32 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
