My mum came to Dean Wood after having a series of bad experiences so was very apprehensive about going into a home. Being an ex care manager I have high expectations of the level of care for my mum. Well, I have to say Dean Wood were caring, empathetic and also listened to my mum and ourselves. They were very person-centred, I cannot fault them - especially the deputy and nurse.

The home is easy to get to and in a nice position looking over the Downs. I had a nice visit with my friend, the care staff were friendly. I think they were very busy though. I was a bit concerned as my friend seemed a little unkempt and her fingernails were very long but I was assured that they would put it on the list to cut them.

My dad was fast-tracked to Dean Wood from hospital. Dad was given all the care he needed in a very professional and caring way the nurses were always polite and kept me up to date with how dad was getting on they are all a credit to the home. All the nurses were amazing but I would like to give an extra shout-out to one of the nurses. My dad has now been discharged and is back at home still a long way to go. If anyone has any worries about a family member being discharged to Dean Wood they will get the best care.

Reply from Melanie Cope, Customer Service Adviser at Dean Wood Care Home

Thank you for taking your time to write us such a lovely and reassuring review. We are so glad you feel your father was well cared for with us under the care of our lovely nurses. We are happy to hear dad is back home, and wish him a very speedy recovery. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for yourself or your family at this time.

My father was fast-tracked to Dean Wood Care Home from the hospital. It was during lockdown so, so far I have not been inside the home but there has been every effort to help me keep in contact with him, be it balcony visits, then garden visits and now a room visit for 30 minutes. The staff have been fantastic. There have been two members of staff in particular that have been so kind and helpful. I can't thank them enough. Dad is settled and joining in social activities and is very pleased indeed.

Great place to be in care. Lovely, well-decorated rooms and a very nice 'wet' room en suite. Shower, toilet, washbasin. Plenty of well situated 'grab' rails for using services and good support care around toilet. Soap dispenser very useful.

Nice 'all singing all dancing' bed and very comfortable. Good and very attentive caring staff, great atmosphere on the' floor'. The food is first class with menu. Choice of two main meals with desserts. There are sandwiches if you want them instead. Soup with supper, laundry service. What more could a 'body' want?

Overall Experience

My father, who is suffering from advanced vascular dementia, entered the care home in July 2020. Unfortunately, due to the COVID visit restrictions, we have been kept informed on residents’ daily life via social media, phone calls and allocated 30 min visits (social media posts are heartwarming and really help under the difficult COVID restrictive circumstances). All staff are extremely informative (when visiting or on the phone) on my father's daily activities, general health and care; fully understanding of the upsetting frustrations we as a family are experiencing in regards limited contact. I get a real sense of the respect and dignity my father receives from all members of the staff, which resonates throughout and shines through within my dad’s demeanour, contentment and healthy appearance. The care has been excellent and hopefully, in the coming months, the visiting will improve but understand the COVID boundaries and the challenges this brings.

My father spent about six weeks in Dean Wood on the medical unit. He was 97 and already in poor health, with dementia.
He was incontinent and confused, he thought he was in a hotel which I saw as a compliment.

The staff were very sensitive, cheerful and personally sensitive to my father's needs, to an extent I thought amazing when they had so many sick people to care for at the same time.

Amazing, caring, patient staff in the dementia unit. The respect, care, attention, comfort they all show to the residents is excellent. My mother's family visit her 2-3 times a day and we all see the staff being so kind to the other residents, many of which don't have family or visitors. We feel very confident in leaving our mother in their care.

The staff here are most helpful. It is a shame that so many agency staff are necessary. The agency staff are usually helpful though. It is good that we have activities to fill the time which could otherwise seem long.

My next of kin has a severe disability and has been in Dean Wood for 13 months. When he arrived he was very unwell and now he is able enough to move out and into an independent living situation. Carers have been very tolerant and kind. Their knowledge and understanding has made my next of kin stay here a success. Many thanks.

Dean Wood offers my mum an excellent, caring and supportive environment.
The care is really good and my mum's needs are met.
The staff are always pleasant and look after us when we visit.
The care home is clean and maintained to a high standard.
The rooms are always clean and tidy.

One important aspect is the number of activities for my mum to do!

My aunt transferred to this home from another Bupa home.
I can't say enough good things about this home.
My aunt has Alzheimer's and the move was quite seamless for her.
Her room is lovely, decorated in warm tones.
The whole home is a welcoming place with a warm feel.
It's spotless.
The staff have been great and have made my aunt happy.
Management has been supportive of me as LPA and living far away in Canada.

A great place!

The process was made simple and clear by the receptionist who showed us around and another member of staff who arranged for my aunt's stay. Two members of staff in residential (plus all the others) were so kind and helpful to me and my aunt. Auntie was sad to leave but I was extremely happy and very confident with the care she was given.

My aunt has been at Deanwood for 3 months. She is in a more stable environment, doesn't seem as confused, likes the food and the staff. The staff seem to give her attention and care. The staff are conscientious, caring and kind. They are respectful of the elderly and show that respect in how they manage care.
Deanwood is 'very' clean, modern and well maintained to me.

Yet I think there is always room for improvement in any organization.
