My husband went into the home for two weeks of respite care at the beginning of March. However, due to COVID-19 lockdown occurred a week later and he is still there. I was only able to visit him a few times before this happened but I have been in touch with him daily via FaceTime. He assures me he is
happy and well looked after (in fact the staff organised a BBQ for his birthday, with numerous gifts and cards). If he is in agreement, I would be happy for him to remain there.

My mother came to Foxburrow Grange nearly five years ago with the expectation that her life might last three to six months. That she is still with us looking as well as she has been in years (both physically and mentally) is a tribute to the quality of care she has received. The transition from her
own home in the Midlands to Colchester was traumatic for all concerned but the help we received and the time staff took to support us all has led to the current happy state of affairs. Staff have shown tremendous respect for my mother's drive to analyse and question things that are new or might change - as a retired teacher she feels it is her duty to check things out. As well as being very bright and clean, Foxburrow is a friendly place for residents and visitors alike.

My mother moved into Foxburrow after coming out of the hospital. I was told by the hospital; my mother was on end-of-life. I know my Mum's health is now deteriorating. However, the home continues to deliver the best care possible in every way. If I could describe in a few words it would be, the staff
that look after my mum are amazing, and thank you, for everything they continue to do.

I have been a full-time carer for my darling wife for the past 2 years. We have been married since 1953 and celebrated our diamond wedding on 17th October 2019. She suffers from mixed dementia and since I have been diagnosed with incurable cancer I found it impossible to continue in my caring role.
In December she spent a week in the hospital and on discharge was placed in this home initially for a 12-week enablement placement. I was extremely upset and felt most guilty but now know I made the right choice. The entire home is a credit to all the staff who carry out their duties with calmness, always attentive to the needs of residents but not intrusive. Visitors are always made to feel welcome at any time. The food is excellent and always prepared for the individual's needs. Activities and entertainment super. This home is a gem and if needs be my wife will stay on.

I found the majority of staff extremely helpful, the food good.
However, I felt let down with the medication.
On two occasions, I missing one tablet due to the fact they were not ordered and once had to obtain prescriptions from my own surgery.

The building is purpose-built, spacious, airy and welcoming. The staff were all friendly and helpful and always went out of their way to help, whatever the situation. The food was excellent and available at any time. Residents could have their food cooked for them or were able to use the kitchen facilities
themselves. One small downside - laundry often went missing, occasionally for a few weeks at a time.

My Mother has been here for 6 months and I'm extremely pleased with it. Wing staff are so caring and look happy to be doing the job they are designated to do. My Mother's needs are complex but carers and nurses deal with everything wonderfully. I visit my Mother regularly and frequently at differing
times so feel I have a good grasp of Foxburrow Grange's care/work ethos. There's never a bad odour in the place, which speaks volumes as to how important hygiene is to the home alongside the wonderful sensitive care. Activities are interactive for residents and music events are incredibly entertaining a real feel-good factor. Due to staff relocation, retirement etc, there have been some changes recently, but these seem to have gone very smoothly and some more innovative ideas are appearing, including a revamped hair salon, which all sound excellent. My Mother still has the same medical issues but it is a relief to see that they are dealt with so well and she is happy and settled. Superb.

Foxburrow Grange Care Home is well positioned within the borough of Colchester. There is generally sufficient parking. Security is good, key codes being changed on a regular. Access to residents is available 24/7 without prior arrangements. The residents are well cared for by both care and nursing staff.
Cleaning is good, both household and laundry facilities. Food is good and plentiful. Residents are helped with feeding as necessary by care staff.

Moved my father, 97 years old to this home at the end of September this year. At first he was upset, as being very set in his ways it was difficult for him to accept a new routine, staff and venue and he did prove something of a problem. The staff however could not have been nicer, patient or more caring
and he is now very happy with both the home, food and staff and has started joining in various activities something he never did in his previous home. We are very relieved that he is now happy and settled and being well cared for.

My sister-in-law has been a resident at Foxburrow Grange for 10 months now and we continue to be impressed with the very high level of care she receives together with the quality of the food and accommodation. Having visited many other homes in the area this was by far our top choice. Recently staff,
on their day off, took my sister-in-law out for lunch in her wheelchair. We have been trying so hard to get her to do this as it was something she so enjoyed. We have taken her out since and are doing so again this week for her birthday, joined by friends.

She has become far more talkative, outward going, responsive and in a far better frame of mind as a result of this act of care and kindness.

The home is benefiting from a new forward-thinking manager and we have been very encouraged already by the way she is taking things forward.

My wife and I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending Foxburrow Grange.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.266)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.266) out of 10 for Foxburrow Grange Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.714 for Foxburrow Grange Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (77 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 105 Ratings = 4.714
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.552 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Foxburrow Grange Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 69 registered maximum number of service users is 13.8. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 13.8 = 0.652
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Wellbeing Co-ordinator Joined: 2025

I made the decision to change careers in November 2024, moving from the Film and TV industry into the care sector to follow my passion for helping others. In July 2025, I joined the team at Foxburrow Grange as an Activities Coordinator.

With a creative background and a strong belief that life doesn’t stop when you enter a care home, I’m committed to bringing energy, empathy, and meaningful engagement to our residents’ daily lives. I work closely with residents, their families, and the wider care team to ensure every individual feels seen, valued, and supported to live life to the fullest.

For me, compassion, connection, and a friendly smile go a long way—and I’m proud to be part of a team that shares those values.
