Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
It was with a heavy heart that I found myself in the position of finding a care home for a very dear, elderly friend, who has no family.
My spirits were lifted when I entered Balmoral.
The airy atmosphere throughout, and the beautifully appointed interior made me feel less anxious.
On a comprehensive
tour, I was able to see the amazing facilities. Meeting the staff, further confirmed my confidence in the high standard of care.
I felt an abundance of kindness flowing from every member of staff.
My friend has now been a resident at Balmoral for over one month and my expectations have become reality.
As a regular visitor now I am able to appreciate the excellent visiting facilities
The stunning brasserie coffee shop provides the perfect environment for visits.
I have also discovered the splendid range of activities. Recently there was a showing of a romance film in-house cinema which my friend loved.
I am so glad I found Balmoral.

My husband has been a resident in this home for twelve months and we have been more than happy with the medical and social care he has received. The staff are all committed to giving residents the best quality of life. There are many social events and facilities to support these. Top quality.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
At a very difficult time I had to identify somewhere for my relative to go after a lengthy hospital stay. On contacting the home the care manager arranged a visit. During the visit we were shown around and met with staff and other residents. We have all got to know each other over the past few months.
The staff on Braemar Suite are excellent they understand my relative's needs and I am reassured that she is being looked after to a very high standard. The senior staff are always available to talk through care plan and offer reassurance. The activities that are put on are varied and recently all residents and staff enjoyed a BBQ. All staff at Balmoral are professional and friendly from the minute you meet the receptionists to the housekeeping and catering staff they are all keen to support and make individuals stay as comfortable as possible.

  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.897 for Balmoral by Northcare is calculated as follows: ( (245 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 271 Ratings = 4.897
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Balmoral by Northcare is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 69 registered maximum number of service users is 13.8, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Martin

Martin McKee

Job Title: Executive Chef Joined: 2019

A classically trained chef with a foundation in fine dining, Martin has dedicated his career not only to the pursuit of culinary excellence but to using food as a tool for care, comfort, and community.
His journey began in high-end restaurants, including a prestigious country house venue in England where he spent seven years refining his craft. During this time, He also embraced a new chapter as a family man, welcoming two of his three children while living down south with his partner and eldest son. In the restaurant, He was part of a team that catered weekly lavish weddings and special events, consistently delivering fine dining at scale.

Martin later took on a vital role at a countryside restaurant and deli owned by Lord and Lady Harriet and Gavin Hamilton. It was there that he was honoured to contribute a signature recipe to the cookbook Made in Shropshire—a publication featuring some of the county’s top chefs and establishments.

Following this, Martin was headhunted to become Head Chef at a high-end retirement home, which later transitioned into a care home. It was during this period that he discovered his passion for elevating food standards in care environments. His efforts were recognised when he was entered into the NACC Chef of the Year competition. He placed second nationally and was invited to showcase care home cuisine at a live cook-off at Birmingham’s NEC during the Good Food Show.
That same year, He began a two-year partnership with Tetley Tea as their brand ambassador.

He developed recipes and hosted themed afternoon teas, even welcoming Tetley’s mascot characters into our care home events. Our collaboration culminated in a Hydration Awareness Booklet designed to promote wellness in care environments, featuring a nostalgic recipe for each decade of the past 100 years.

In 2019, Martin returned home to Scotland to take up the position of Head Chef for Northcare Scotland. Despite the move, He continued his culinary competitions and won NACC Chef of the Year 2019, representing Northcare.

Since then, He has continued to advocate for excellence in care catering, working as a consultant for British Lion Eggs. Over the past three years, He has created 18 professional recipe videos and presented live on-stage at the Nottingham Food Expo, where I re-created my winning dessert.
In 2025, He was deeply honoured to be invited to the 25th Anniversary of the NACC at the House of Lords as a celebrated former champion.

He has also had the privilege of working alongside and learning from some of the leading voices in the care catering sector, including Preston Walker and James Ball. Through them, Martin has been trained in IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) food standards and remain committed to promoting safe, nutritious, and dignified meals for all.
