Having to place my Mother in assisted living was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. Faced with the task of flying across the world, moving my mother from hospital to assisted living, making her new room comfortable and safe for her, removing her remaining possessions from her house,
selling her estate, selling her house was daunting to say the least.

With that on my plate, the professional staff at the Chocolate Works made tasks 1 and 2 as easy as possible for both myself and my mother.

Since she has moved into the assisted living facility, I am continually amazed by how everything is provided for my mother. You would like fruit on your breakfast? Done. streaming services wont log in? Done. Pictures need hanging? Done.

Simply said, they make everything easier for both myself, and more importantly, my mother. The peace of mind I get from the staff's professionalism and care is without comparison.

Mum went to the Chocolate Works with dementia and related anxiety, particularly associated with sundowning. Over 4 weeks she's been there, her anxiety and confusion have diminished largely because of the outstanding care and support of all the staff at Chocolate Works. The facilities are excellent,
there are a great choice of activities available and a very calming environment. Nothing is too much trouble, and we're always made to feel welcome when visiting.
Reply from David Donnell, Reviews Team at Chocolate WorksThank you so much for taking the time to share this lovely feedback, Janet. We're incredibly pleased to hear how well your mum has settled and that her anxiety and confusion have eased during her time with us. Supporting people living with dementia, particularly around sundowning, is something our team takes great care with, so it means a great deal to know the calm environment and consistent support have made such a positive difference.
Your kind words about our staff, activities and facilities will be shared with the whole team they'll be very proud to know their efforts are making families feel welcome and supported. Thank you for trusting us with your mum's care.

Yesterday (12th January 2026) my husband and I went to visit our ex neighbour and friend of almost 40 years. Sadly her dementia had made it necessary for her to move onto the specific floor for her needs. We have never visited her here, only when she was in her own home. We arrived unannounced at
lunchtime and joined our friend in the dining area. We were warmly welcomed by staff and our friend recognised us and it was quite emotional initially. The staff were so friendly and courteous and we were so very impressed with her care and surroundings. I have told our family we would quite happily move in here if and when the need arises. It is beyond superb.
Reply from David Donnell, Reviews Team at Chocolate WorksDear Beatrice,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and heartfelt review. We're truly grateful for your kind words and for trusting us with such a meaningful visit.
We understand how emotional these moments can be, especially when dementia changes circumstances so profoundly, and we're delighted to hear that you and your husband felt warmly welcomed and reassured by our team. Knowing that your friend recognised you and that you were able to share that moment together is incredibly special.
Your comments about the care, staff, and environment mean a great deal to us, and we'll be sure to share your feedback with the team, who work tirelessly to provide compassionate, person-centred care every day.
Thank you again for your lovely words and recommendation. They truly mean more than you know.
Kind regards

Our 7 day stay was for rest & recuperation following a fall by my wife; both were in need, our main need was to have medicines promptly & timely (excellently achieved). The room was large well furnished & comfortable - although mattress somewhat saggy. The only down side was the food. Always promptly
served with great care but somewhat bland in variety & size. Major plus - the staff who were happy, well trained & eager to help. Always V. courteous. Their help made our stay. When we left we both felt we had received the benefit we sought.

My Grandfather had a wonderful 9 day respite at The Chocolate Works. Nothing was too much trouble for the team.
He was welcomed and made to feel comfortable straight away, as we're the rest of the family who visited. My children were so impressed that they asked if we could 'holiday' there ourselves.
There is a good range of activities and the quality and selection of the food was great. I was even able to stay and share a meal with my grandfather one evening. It was so nice to be able to do something which, at one time, was part of our weekly routine, without the challenges that this now poses.
The bedroom was well presented and the team made sure all the relevant mobility aids were in place. The whole place was clean and tidy.
The main atrium is a lovely place to be able to socialise when visiting. It has an outdoor feel and made grandad feel like he had had a day out without having to step food out of the door.
Highly recommend, can't thank the staff enough.

My partner has advanced Alzheimer's disease. She has lost all mobility, can only say the odd word and requires 24 hour bed-nursing. She is given the highest quality of care and with such sensitivity to her needs.

My mother spent over five years in The Chocolate Works. Mainly on the Knavesmire Floor where she had a large room next to the beautiful Atrium where she could feel included in the community. She was very well looked after and fond of the staff. She could not have been in a better place during Covid.
I was kept well informed about her welfare and the response times were very good if she needed assistance. She was very happy there.
Poor food. Residents were mostly not given freshly cooked meals but served tray meals. My mother lost a great deal of weight.
Later she was moved to Riverside. The layout is not ideal. Residents are confined to rooms rather isolated. Long walks to public areas. Difficult for poor staff to respond quickly to calls for assistance. Food is often served cold in rooms and dietary requirements are not followed.
End-of-life care was sensitive and supportive to me.
Reception, Management, Nursing, Caterers and Carers became my mother's second family. We were grateful that she was happy and secure there.
Reply from Dave Fieldhouse, Home Manager at Chocolate WorksThank you for your lovely review but I'm sorry that you weren't happy with our food offering. We are making changes and the kitchen has been extended to enable us to accommodate more bespoke meal options. After several years on Knavesmire, Mum had to be moved to Riverside as her physical and mental condition required more care. She received such good care there that her Cellulitis improved significantly. The staff were very caring and management listened to any concerns we had, such as Mum's hatred of
the hoist, male staff undertaking her personal care, and did their best to balance her needs with her wishes. We did feel there could have been better liaison between Knavesmire & Riverside, e.g. regarding Mum's meals. She never liked red meat, preferring fish and chicken & felt over-faced by the portion sizes. Also, we were disappointed that her clothes sometimes disappeared & she'd be wearing someone else's. However, Mum's end-of-life care was excellent. All the staff treated her with respect & friendship and she became very fond of them and vice-versa. During her final weeks, everything possible was done to keep her pain-free & to reassure & comfort her. They even reassured & comforted us.
Reply from Dave Fieldhouse, Home Manager at Chocolate WorksWe are truly grateful for your kind words about the care your mum received during her time with us. My Mother has been a resident for over 4 years. The first 2 years were on the main floor when she was ambulatory. Then mother had 3 strokes and fell and broke her back. Since then she has been on the top floor, bedridden.
For the first 2 years, she enjoyed herself and was well taken care of. After
her strokes and now residing on the top floor her care and mental health has not been as good. I call her every day on video call and most of our calls are filled with tears.
She has some issues hearing and she does not want to leave her room. She will be 89 this month and in my opinion, is miserable. She tells me she doesn't want to be alive anymore. This is not the home's fault but the UK system.
Senior management and staff are great. Daily care and junior staff are OK. Some carer's knowledge of English could be better.
The monthly fees are in my opinion, very high.
Looking after old people is a tough job. and getting old is not pleasant.
I hope she gets her wish soon.

Thank you to everyone at the Chocolate Works for looking after my father-in-law for the last six months of his life. We only wish we could have persuaded him to move in with you earlier. Everything was easy to arrange - even moving him from the huge apartment we thought he'd love to a much smaller room
in the 'thick of it'. He really appreciated having people popping in and out and knowing that there were people around at all times. He loved the food - especially his cooked breakfasts - and was looking forward to giving a talk to other residents about his book collecting. Sadly, a stay in York Hospital put paid to that. It was a huge relief for the entire family when we knew he was safely in your care and that you would call a doctor or district nurse whenever he needed. Special thanks to two ladies for being so kind.

My mother has been a Chocolate Works Care Village resident for almost two years. She had been experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease and could no longer take care of herself. Moving into a care home was not easy - in fact, it had always been her worst nightmare. The staff were immediately on to
this and took great pains to settle her in.
Family members noticed a change in her almost immediately. She made friends with the other residents and the staff, began to join in the daytime activities, and just seemed happier. Eating the nutritious, well-prepared meals, she soon started recovering her physical strength. Even her memory and communication skills improved.
The building at the Care Village is impressive, but it's the staff that make the place special. Three members of staff have been nothing short of angels. They have provided care that is both professional and has a real family feel. They have come through for us time and time again. This place has saved my mother's life.

My father lived in the Chocolate Works for several years and was extremely well looked after by all the staff there, all of whom he thoroughly enjoyed engaging with and I know many of them were fond of him. Some weeks before he died he had a stroke and was in York hospital for a while where I visited
him daily. He was soon brought back to the Chocolate Works in an ambulance and settled back into his room but sadly, he died a few days later. I was relieved that he died with people around him who he knew and that he didn't suffer for too long with the stroke and the staff were all very kind to me, allowing me to spend some time with him after his death.
My thanks go to all the staff who, over the years my father was there, cared for him, washed him, dressed him, and generally made sure he was happy and comfortable. It was also wonderful to see a few of the staff attend his funeral at the crematorium. Thank you all.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.526) out of 10 for Chocolate Works is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.526 for Chocolate Works is calculated as follows: ( (174 Excellents x 5) + (50 Goods x 4) + (19 Satisfactorys x 3) + (8 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 253 Ratings = 4.526
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Chocolate Works is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 102 registered maximum number of service users is 20.4, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

With over 36 years of experience in the healthcare sector, including 20 as a Registered Home Manager, I’m proud to lead the team at Chocolate Works care home. My background includes 27 years in administration, finance and business support, and I’ve been with Care UK for 14 years, most recently transferring internally from Ventress Hall.

I hold a QCF/SVQ Level 4 in Leadership and a Qualsafe Level 3 in Mental Health First Aid. I’m passionate about creating a safe, high-quality care environment, and I strive every day to support both residents and my team. I’m proud of what I’ve achieved, most notably consolidating and enhancing care services, including expanding dementia care and delivering NHS-contracted intermediate care services.

I’m proud of the strong relationships I build with residents, families, staff and the wider community. I start every day greeting residents and staff, and I make time for regular walkabouts to stay present and involved. The heart of my role is ensuring safety, quality care and excellent leadership.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, especially my grandson, Chester. I enjoy travelling, making memories and raising funds for charity. In 2023, I completed a 15,000ft skydive, raising over £2,600 for St Teresa’s Hospice. Wing-walking is next!
