Having to put your parent into care is never an easy decision to make, especially at 98 years of age. However, the management and staff at the Chocolate Works Care Village have done everything they can to make the transition for Dad as easy as possible. They are kind, helpful and respectful of Dad's care.

Other than still being at home, my dad is definitely in good hands. I wouldn't want him anywhere else.

Mum was happy and content at the Chocolate Works Care Village where she lived for four years and, as a visitor, I was always made very welcome. The manager is always approachable and her staff are professional, patient, cheerful and kind - they treated Mum like a valued friend and looked after her so well, especially as she neared the end of her life. Mum was cared for and cared about.

With facilities second to none, I would highly recommend the Chocolate Works to anyone looking for a care home for a loved one.

My father spent the last three years of his life on the Minster floor at the Chocolate Works Care Village. The care and consideration he received was fantastic. He was very nervous for the first few months at this new chapter in his life but the staff gently ensured he was happy and knew he belonged. He loved the quizzes and learned new skills, like silk painting. It was his home and he was very happy.

My mum was a resident here from February 2022 in what had been an extremely stressful year for her. The minute we walked into the reception the staff were so kind and caring. Mum was suffering from chronic anxiety along with other medical problems and the nurses, health carers etc. were absolutely amazing with Mum and slowly but surely Mum started to engage with them and trust them. Sadly at the beginning of April 2022 Mum needed end-of-life care, the way every member of staff dealt with Mum was so caring, kind and compassionate, nothing was too much trouble and not only was my mum treated in this way but myself and my three daughters were too, in what were exceptionally sad and difficult circumstances as Mum sadly passed away 8th May 2022. A care home with exceptional staff, treating people like they were their own family and going above and beyond.

The care Mum received was second to none. All the staff do a fantastic job. They are caring, compassionate and cannot do enough for those in their care. They have been like a second family for Mum this last year when we were unable to visits. We will always be grateful for the way they cared for Mum at the end of her life, and also for the care, they showed to us at the end.

My mother was admitted to an ‘end of life’ care bed at the beginning of June - amidst very difficult and challenging circumstances for staff and patients alike.
Mum passed away at the end of August so had spent almost 3 months in the company of the staff.
The care home management showed great concern and diligence over safety measures to ensure the building was as Covid secure as possible. Regular testing of staff and patients took place.
The room was excellent and although Mum wasn’t eating much, the staff encouraged her continually. Mum was able to watch TV and her favourite DVD’s.
The carers were fantastic and treated my mother with dignity and almost like an ‘old friend’. Small things meant so much to her and the lady painting her nails was one such example.

The staff were lovely and helped the family communicate with her via iPhone FaceTime on a regular basis. It is a few months ago now but I remember the kindness of the nurses and carers involved with Mum’s care.

The care that my Mother received whilst living at this home was fantastic. All the staff from the Manager to the Housekeeping staff were caring and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The home is run very professionally from when my Mother first arrived to when she sadly died. My Mother enjoyed her time here - even the food! As the building is listed the individual rooms and apartments are of a very good size, these were the largest I came across when looking for a care home for my Mother - I looked at around ten in the area. The rooms have high ceilings and lovely big sash windows, the lounge area is set out beautifully with comfy sofas and armchairs, in nice fabrics - not what you usually find. There is outside space, a cinema, restaurant and a roof-top terrace. The home is located very close to Rowntree Park and York Racecourse. My mother lived in a residential area. I cannot recommend The Chocolate Works Care Village highly enough.

This review is for a very dear friend who sadly, at the age of 91, could no longer live independently at home.
She had visited the Chocolate Works Care Village on a number of occasions over the past three years and had spent last Christmas Day visiting with us to have Christmas Dinner with our uncle and the staff, so when she said it was time she moved into full-time care, Bishopthorpe Road was the place for her!
She had already met some of the staff and residents, so moving in was not too big a trauma for her. All the staff made her very welcome and her room was just like being back in her own home, with everything she needed (with much better bathroom facilities than she had!)

Everyone was so kind and helpful to her, she wanted for nothing (day or night). But sadly after been nursed for a very short time, she passed away very peacefully and with utmost dignity, with loving carers by her side (under the Covid-19 restrictions). Big thank you to you all.

My father became a resident at The Chocolate Works in March. This was closely followed by the Coronavirus Lockdown, which meant that it has been a particularly difficult time for the family, being unable to visit and reassure him, and ourselves, that all was well. However, knowing that he is being so well looked after, in comfortable surroundings, by such dedicated, cheerful and professional carers has made all the difference. We have especially appreciated the regular facilitation of video Skype sessions for the family, which have been so important in keeping us in touch with my father, and the staff. Their kindness, understanding, and appreciation of the individuality of each resident have shone through.

Daughter of resident. I comment not only as an adult child who has an adored parent in The Chocolate Works but as a professional employed elsewhere (not The Chocolate Works, NHS or social care). As a counsellor to children, young people and adults affected by incurable illnesses and bereavement I see person-centred care, compassion and professionalism in the everyday care at The Chocolate Works. Staff are tender and sweet, there is no rushing, no impatience and no intolerance. As a family, if we see or feel something isn't quite right staff are approachable and responsive. Nothing is too much trouble, all staff that I have witnessed or helped my relative are kind, tender and patient to all - not just my relative, who has been living at The Chocolate Works since the end of August 2019, but many others. I visit most days and leave for home relieved, reassured and know my relative is safe, happy and well cared for. Thank you to all staff and volunteers.

The love and care offered by The Chocolate Works made a material difference to the last few weeks of my mum's life. The whole team were the ultimate professionals from start to finish. Their kindness and dignity towards my mum was very special and this was matched by a wonderful environment. I can't thank this team enough for all they did for the whole family. We are eternally grateful - so kind, so patient, so lovely.

Visiting my aunt from Australia with my sister and her former employer, all three of us were impressed and overwhelmed but the magnificence of The Chocolate Works. The staff were extremely welcoming and made us tea and ensured we received privacy and time with my aunt.

Her room was sufficient for her needs and the ambience of the main community area a model to be copied. I shall send pictures to the governing bodies in Australia currently investigating the poor standard of many of our Aged Care facilities.

My general opinion of The Chocolate Works is that of a well thought out, interesting environment coupled with well trained, caring, enthusiastic staff. The first floor (Riverside) seems to fare less well when it comes to activities e.g. children's visits/singing etc. Dementia suffers need extra stimulation in this respect rather than sitting round an unwatched TV set and this is an area for improvement. Another downside is care of clothing, with many items going missing despite carrying clear name tags and others thrown haphazardly in wardrobes and drawers with little thought as to their value.

Overall, however, I am pleased with the care of my sister and the peace of mind I have for her future.

My sister in law entered The Chocolate Works in July 2017 initially in a nursing room and later transferred to a large care room.

At all times she was attended to with care and courtesy; certainly no lack of attention on a daily basis. The staff were equally receptive to my visits. The one complaint would be the quality of the food.

What an incredibly beautiful care home! Although what makes is so special is the members of staff currently working there. The wonderful chair lady is professional, friendly, informed. All of their smiles light up the amazing atrium.

Nanna's room is beautifully presented and is big and light. The remaining lounge areas are peaceful and tastefully decorated. The chocolate cake looked to die for - covered in oozing buttercream sprinkles.
