We had struggled and failed to get any support for my mum and came to Bunker's Hill in crisis. All the staff were so caring and supportive of the whole family through an extremely difficult time. My mum is so well cared for and is treated with utmost respect and patience. We, the family, have been supported
in ensuring my mum has the best life possible and helping us come to terms with and cope with her dementia. All the staff do their utmost not just to provide care but to bring joy to all the residents' lives every single day.

On the whole care is very good for moderate dementia patients. Please bear in mind that this is not a suitable setting for advanced or complex dementia patients. Staff are not able to deal with such issues.

All staff go 'above and beyond' the care needed for residents, surroundings are lovely and bedrooms spacious. Food is excellent and all residents are able to choose what they prefer daily. All visitors are made very welcome and are able to visit at any time.

I always love coming to the home, from walking in. The reception staff are fantastic. They are always so helpful. The manager is always there for me. The carers are lovely and it feels like a home from home. What a wonderful place.

The Valleys Care Home

from James D (Son of Resident) published on 28 March 2025
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 1.0 out of 5
My Mum was placed in The Valleys by the Council. Within a month she had lost a lot of weight and had deteriorated rapidly. Approximately one month after entering the care home she then had three falls in one day. She ended up in Hospital for many weeks and was eventually discharged into another care
home. She is now in a very bad way and will not recover. I requested an investigation into what happened and it is clear from the official safeguarding investigation report by the Council that my Mum was not kept adequately hydrated. The report states that my Mum was offered only 400ml of fluid on the days leading up to her falls. The target is 1500ml per day. The report states that there are inconsistencies in the amount of fluid offered to my Mum before her falls, with as little as 300ml being offered some days. The Valleys were asked for the reasons and simply ignored the request for information from the Council.
Reply from Alice Pawson, Home Manager at The Valleys Care Home

The Valleys always strives to give the best care possible to all its residents, so it is therefore very disappointing to read this review. We are very sorry that our resident’s son, James, was unhappy with the care that we gave his Mum whilst she was with us.

However, we do not recognise his description of the care given or indeed the attitude of the home. We feel the review is inaccurate on many levels and gives a completely false impression of what actually occurred in the home and of the treatment and care given to his mother during her stay with us.

We would like to take this opportunity to address specific points:
The reviewer states “My Mum was placed in The Valleys by the Council. Within a month she had lost a lot of weight and had deteriorated rapidly.”
Factually we can confirm that this resident’s weight did not decrease during their stay at the home. This resident came to reside at the care home as requested by the family, and 3 show arounds of the home were conducted prior to admission.
The reviewer states “Approximately one month after entering the care home she then had three falls in one day. She ended up in Hospital for many weeks and was eventually discharged into another care home.”
We can confirm the nature of the people we care for does mean they are at high risk of falls and all appropriate steps are taken to minimise risk and injury. We ensure that all external healthcare professionals are involved, and we can confirm that factually this was the case for this resident.
The hospital contacted the care home when this resident was ready for discharge and asked if she could return to The Valleys but stated that she now required a 1:1 care regime. The Valleys Care home is not able to facilitate 1:1 placements, and this is when an alternative care home was explored for this resident.
The reviewer states “She is now in a very bad way and will not recover. The Valleys were asked for the reasons and simply ignored the request for information from the Council.”
A full internal investigation was carried out by the care home and shared with the local authority Safeguarding team with no further actions recommended by the Safeguarding Team on reviewing the report. The assertions by the reviewer are factually inaccurate.

We always welcome feedback; however, it is our opinion that this review is neither balanced nor factually accurate. We are always more than happy to discuss the care we give with any family and would be happy to do so in this case, if James would like to get back in touch with us.

The Valleys Care Home is an excellent care home for my wife who has Alzheimer's disease. The staff are very caring and understanding of her needs, the seniors note all the needs of my wife and immediately call me if she is "out of sorts" in any way.
The catering department is excellent and my wife
really enjoys her food we had a party for her on the 7th December in the Day Care Unit and the buffet supplied was really top notch.
The activities team are always excellent and involve the residents a lot in games and puzzles and artistic events like painting etc.
The cleaning dept is very good too and any mishaps are promptly dealt with in an efficient way.
The Reception Staff are always very welcoming and smiling and seem to know who everyone is
The Manager is a very caring person who is always available for any concerns that I may have about my Wife's welfare
So all in all I am very satisfied with the Valleys

My dad is in this care home. We find it outstanding. The staff are so helpful, and overall you cannot fault it. We had the choice of this one and another but chose The Valleys as other family members also stayed here. Thank you for looking after our dad so well.

Sourcing and placing my father into a Care Home was a very difficult decision to make for my family. Following a visit to Bunkers Hill, we were so impressed with the facilities including the staff. We were initially met by a very enthusiastic member of staff who was extremely attentive, very informative
and provided us with a tour of the facilities including answering all of our questions. This was followed by an introduction to the Manager who was so empathetic to our situation and most importantly she listened. Compassionate towards our plight, she provided a great deal of reassurance. We made the decision to place my father and this was the best decision we made. Communication/feedback was second to none from all staff. A huge thank you from us for taking care of him, despite the fact he was only with you for a short period of time prior to passing, we know he was well cared for.

All the staff are always helpful and welcoming. Throughout the pandemic, we have been able to see Mum on FaceTime, and then with masks, gloves and apron from a distance - out in the garden when the weather was warm. Then inside a designated room when the weather was cold behind a screen (also, one of
the family could be tested and meet Mum in a designated room) then all back to behind a screen. (From the 8th March one of the family can be tested and meet Mum in a designated room again).

Staff are always very helpful and happy. Very reassuring that our loved one is in safe hands and being clear of Covid-19 is very good, and shows that everyone is doing everything and more besides - cannot fault them with anything. Nothing is too much trouble. Have recommended them on more than one occasion.

Everyone at The Valleys is fantastic. My nan has been there for 2-years now. She's happy and looked after amazingly. Also just found my great auntie at The Valleys. We didn't know she was there as we haven't seen her for 10-years. My dad has dementia, and sooner or later, he will need to go into The
Valleys also.

My wife is beautifully looked after at The Valleys Care home. All the staff are competent and caring. My family and I put our trust in the organisation and are right to do so. It is however difficult to be completely objective at present in some areas due to limited access due to Covid-19.

Brilliant care home where individual needs are met. There are plenty of food and drink choices on a varied menu with plenty of activities organised. All staff I have dealt with are polite and request more toiletries, personal spending or clothes whenever required. The staff on Jasmine wing are brilliant,
my Gran was always happy and content when I went to see her and the staff knew her so well, they could easily tell when something wasn't right with her.
Each resident has their own spacious room with loo, TV and DVD player. Thank you Bunkers Hill.

I am permanently disabled and have Alzheimer's disease. I have nursing care at this care home and have been here for 2 1/2 years. My overall care is good although personal care I.e. Toilet etc sometimes makes me cross. Care home cleanliness is good and food menu is acceptable. My husband visits regularly
and treated well.
