I would like to formally acknowledge and commend the significant improvements in the care provided to my father-in-law.

Following the safeguarding concerns that were previously raised, we met the manager to discuss the findings of her report, and it is clear to us that the concerns were taken seriously and that appropriate internal actions have been implemented. We appreciate the openness and transparency shown throughout the process.

Since that time, we have seen a marked improvement in my father-in-law's day-to-day care. The team has consistently demonstrated professionalism, compassion, and dedication, working closely with us as a family, alongside his medical professionals, to ensure that his complex medical and behavioural needs are understood and appropriately supported.

We recognise the hard work, patience, and commitment shown by all the staff, and we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the care and support they continue to provide.

DO NOT let your relatives live here. We have had to raise numerous safeguarding issues that were so delayed in a response and issues are brushed under the carpet. Management has changed at least 8 times in the time my father has been a resident and so the approach to managing this complex home is flawed.
The staff who work there are under a lot of pressure (so many have left) with no support from management. They have recently reduced the staff ratio WITHOUT informing family members and constantly shift caring staff to other units. They don't have time to bond or get to know each residents specialised needs.

Our dad was given the covid booster against our express written wishes. They are now evicting our father as with no true justification. "We cannot meet his needs" but they could 4 weeks ago in a social review. Surprisingly evicted after another complaint. If you have relatives here I recommend you get them out asap for your loved ones sake and your own sanity!

Do not send your family to this care home.
They have had over eight managers in the space of three years.
Every time you raise a complaint with the management team, they suggest that you move your family member to another Home if you are not happy.
They do not respond to complaints in a timely manner and they have an excuse for every single safeguarding that you raise.
They manipulate their staff and coerce them to give a false representation of how your family member has been. We know staff who have previously worked for the company and have been told how much management coerced them. They left because of this.
The staff on the floor Work extremely hard and management do not support them whatsoever.
They gave our father a Covid jab when we signed 3 forms to ask them not to due to his epilepsy.

They are now evicting our father because we raise safeguarding concerns. They play the system. We strongly recommend you do not send your family member there.

Overall Experience

Our mother has been in Hawthorne House for just under 2 years. There has been several changes in management structure which is not always good.

Our contact with management has been largely driven through complaints, otherwise there is minimal communication with families in general. The permanent staff are kind and accommodating but the use of agency staff negatively impacts residents with dementia and MH issues due to lack of familiarisation.
Cleaning standards were very poor but have slightly improved due to the pending CQC inspection.

The food has improved recently, however we feel there was not much focus on our mothers dietry needs. The laundry process requires ongoing attention, the home has lost multiple items clothing which we have had to replace and we were advised a labelling machine would be purchased but this has yet to transpire.

My son is happy and settled and is receiving the best care. He enjoys the food and the staff are very kind and friendly and always make me feel comfortable when I visit, the only issue we have encountered is that some of my sons clothing do not return from the laundry, we have now labelled all his clothes and hopefully this should minimise this to happen again.

Reply from Kim Kelly, Bed Management at Hawthorne House

Thank you, Ann, for your kind words and for allowing us the privilege of caring for your loved one. We truly appreciate your honest review and for highlighting an area where we can improve. Mapleleaf is absolutely amazing they can't do enough for you. Mum has been there 5 years and I have never had one complaint about her care. Every single member of staff in that home makes you feel welcome and engages with residents. Mapleleaf is like our 2nd family. I know my mum get the best ever and I don't have to worry about it. Mum is always clean and well presented and looked after. This home goes above and beyond.

My brother's been here for a few years, and any concerns I have raised have been dealt with professionally. I have to call out to the Manager in particular, her ownership and caring persona are commendable. All staff interact with my brother and seem to take an interest. I would recommend Maple Leaf.

Do not send your relative to this care home. Relative has been in 5 days on discharge from hospital despite daily request to mobilise. They have left her in bed on her own. She is used to being in a care home with people engaging with her, not left to lie on a bed like a dog. We have been asking for an inflating mattress to prevent sores, no one has taken responsibility always passing the buck. Despicable care.

All staff are agency some speak little English.
There is no compassion present, my grandad lost 10kg within 4 weeks of being here, no supplements were provided.
He was given toast for breakfast and constantly coughing on liquids which I raised so many times that he needed a salt assessment that never took place.
My grandad was left for 6 days with a fractured arm. How they were able to complete personal care without knowing was a joke, his arm was swollen and bruised and he was in pain!

I noticed his arm and a doctor was called in. He was then on morphine for the pain in the hospital. He then deteriorated that much after losing 10kg and the fractured arm that he passed away from aspiration which caused pneumonia so I was right he did have problems swallowing and if he had been assessed by the salt team he wouldn’t have lost 10kg in 4 weeks of being there. All of this led to the death of my grandad! The issue is it’s all agency staff that come and go. Never would I allow a family member to go here.

Management of this home is a joke, the company has had one manager after another, and recently a period where there was none. No evening/weekend management coverage. Very little continuity with care staff, the majority being Agency, of which a good percentage speak or understand little English, to the point most of the time we have given up. In July, fire alarms were set off, at least twice a day for Staff training due to high turnover. Consideration? Was this given to the residents, who were left alone, or sitting below an extremely irritating fire alarm? Management is very rarely available for any concerns. Covid jab was given, request for this not to be done. I could go on and on!

A few staff have been excellent, but they are under pressure supporting the constant turnover of staff, no new member of staff can replace a permanent member it takes weeks and time with the resident to be a 100% member of the team. This 'home' is run on tick-boxing exercise and no more!

As a family member, I feel each time we voice ourselves in regards to helping my brother in any way the staff see it as a negative thing. i.e. every time we voice something its taken negatively i.e. even just saying we want to take our brother out with his 121 to the park for a few hours was refused and then further seen as the family being unreasonable (my brother had texted because the weather was warm and he just wanted to go out for few hours). I was shocked at the response and more importantly, was told the nurse has gone home stressed because of the family (all we did was ask for a reason for the change/refusal ? and a copy of the change of policy). Then to our shock, we all went park without my brother but then got a phone call from our neighbour that he was dropped off there! no communication from the care home at this point to say this happened and on top of that the 121 left him on his own there! I really hope other people feel like they cannot voice themselves and it really healthy to have 2-way communication.

Review of Hawthorne House from Ann H (Daughter of Resident) published on 21 June 2022 Submitted via Website

My father was transferred to Hawthorn House after a long hospital stay for assessments before being considered for transfer to a suitable environment. We were impressed from the outset by the dedicated and conscientious care staff provided. Dad has dementia with challenging behaviours but their care and attitude was excellent. As dad has deteriorated they have shown compassion and understanding. They have provided dad with dignified care and us with moral and practical support. They have listened carefully and addressed our concerns. They have involved other professionals as needed and continued to keep us up to date and fully informed on dads needs and condition. We have requested dad stay at Hawthorn House for the rest of his now time limited care, secure in the fact he and us as a family will continue to be supported. Thank you to all staff involved.

This home has given our father so, so much care. He was placed here as part of an NHS 6 week assessment. We are only 4 weeks in, but the care has been truly exemplary. Whilst our father will never be 'cured' of his dementia, we have seen such an improvement in his overall state. He is so much more settled. As a family, we had already chosen a care home we had hoped he could live at post assessment, but such is the care he receives from absolutely every member of staff at Maple Leaf House, that we hope to secure a permanent placement once the assessment is over.

This home is completely amazing. I cannot do it justice in words for the care and support they have for my relative and his wife of 73 years, a regular visitor. The care and support was unique, personal, dignified, kind and respectful. From housekeeper cleaner, chef, carer, nurse and manager everyone plays a part in making care completely special. Life is unique and precious and this home attempts to respect and reflect that in its care.

My father has received excellent care since the day he arrived in February 2019.
The staff are exceptionally caring and attention to all patients. The food is varied, nutritious and residents are given choices. The environment is friendly and clean at all times. It's nice to see a care home look more like a home than an old people's place.
I would not hesitate in recommending Maple Leaf to anyone.

The management and staff are first class.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who looked after my mother until her passing.

My mother was treated with respect and dignity throughout her stay at Hawthorne House. The staff were amazing right up to the end. Although they were so busy with other matters, time was always found to spend time and see to my mother's needs and requests.

Their respect and compassion extended to family members as well.

So, many grateful thanks to Hawthorne House and it's amazing staff.
