My father is very settled here and feels looked after and cared for. He enjoys the food and loves reading his books in the conservatory. The staff are friendly and the community is happy and welcoming.

Mum has been at St Luke's for almost 2 years now and has made lots of friends. She joins in with the activities and is enjoying the Care Home. The Care home keeps us informed of Mum's well-being and always contacts us if there is anything wrong. The care they give her is excellent and we have complete trust in the Staff. Mum enjoys the food and its variation. The care home is kept clean and tidy and the staff is always friendly. They are always willing to help if needed. We are happy with the overhaul care.

Mum has been at St Lukes for two months now and can say that the care and concern the staff have shown my mum is exceptional. Everyone at St Luke's go out of their way to be friendly and supportive. Mum always looks clean and her room is always neat and tidy. We feel she is safe in the care of the staff at St Lukes.

I travel from a considerable distance to visit my mother and my visits are predominantly all-day visits.
Over time I have become aware of the standards of care provided to both my mother and other residents. Whilst overall, there is a service being provided, on more than one occasion I have had to raise concerns with members of staff and the manager.
In October 2023 this resulted in serving management with an official complaint relating to an incident that failed to provide duty of care to my mother. I held management responsible for failing to adequately train their staff, failing in their hygiene standards, to provide remedial care, to maintain accurate records of care and care plans and to maintain an acceptable standard of duty of care, practice and procedures. It is a highly emotive issue to witness a loved one’s care being compromised by the failure of staff to deal with unacceptable standards of care.

This has lead to being denied access to visit my mother.

I see little change from when I said I was happy with the care staff and the facilities

in general but felt that there was little in the way of activities for the Oaks residents. Seem to remember a commitment to improving this with recruitment, but I've yet to witness a difference. The home is, however, value for money when compared to some of the astonishing fees charged by other homes in the Thames Valley.

Reply from Kim Franks, Manager at St Lukes & The Oaks Care Home

Good Afternoon, William; thank you for your feedback. I'm happy to let you know that we have finally recruited an Activities Organiser, who starts on Monday 15th January. This will also help our current Engagement Lead. It's a big home for only one person, so I'm hoping you will see some changes now.

St Lukes & The Oaks is a wonderful care home because of its fantastic, caring and efficient staff. I am very pleased with Mum's care needs being met. I would, however, like more feedback on how she is doing instead of me having to chase.

My Dad has been at St Luke's for 1.5 years and is generally very content. He has some lovely carers and helpers, who have adjusted to his needs and character. He enjoys the food and occasionally joins in with the activities provided, with encouragement. His room is kept clean and his clothes are washed and processed quickly. I am very satisfied with the loving way he is dealt with. Dad suffers from anxiety, and there are times when this becomes overwhelming. The carers are great at reassuring him and calming him down, but he finds weekends particularly difficult, as there's often new staff who he doesn't know. This can cause him to spiral down, and I would say that every weekend I get a phone call from him that he's really upset.

I am always pleased with the interaction between myself and the staff, and I feel I am kept informed.

My father has been a resident of St Lukes for 2 years now and has not been so happy for a very long time. He is extremely well cared for and has settled in well. The accommodation is lovely and the staff are second to none. There always seems to be a lot going on with activities and plenty to occupy the time. When we visit we are always made very welcome and feel part of the family, nothing is too much trouble. We love it there and hope to book in soon! Thank you St Lukes, you are wonderful!

My mum has been a resident at St Lukes for three years and she is very happy. She frequently says that the staff cannot do enough for her and how well she is looked after.

The staff always go the extra mile to make sure that Mum is happy and that is not always easy as she can be very fussy. Whenever we visit we get a warm welcome and smiles.

Residents are treated with care and compassion. There are lots of activities for the residents and the food provided is healthy and nutritious.
There could be a little more attention to the cleaning in the individual bedrooms but the main lounges are very bright, comfortable and clean.

Overall I am very pleased with this home and Mum is happy here!

We moved my stepmum into St Lukes and The Oaks in early July. She was extremely resistant to go into a care home. With that said, she has thrived at St Lukes. She looks so much healthier and better taken care of. She says she really enjoys it. She participates in many of the activities and has made friends. She says she is happy she has moved and that is music to our ears. The staff really seems to care about their charges!

Mum is generally well cared for although her dementia means she doesn’t always engage well with staff and other residents. However, it would be good to have more feedback on how she is doing and what she has or hasn’t engaged with.

The activity programme is getting better but there are still days when no activities appear to be offered.

Reply from Kim Franks, Manager at St Lukes & The Oaks Care Home

Thank you for your comments. The Activity Lead doesn't work every day and we are currently recruiting for another Activity Organiser to enable us to increase the activities offered. Please feel free to speak to staff during your visits, who will let you know how Mum is getting on.

Overall Experience
As a family, we've been very impressed with the care, friendship and dedication of all the staff at St Luke's. We were naturally concerned when both our parents reached the stage of needing 24-hour care, but St Luke's ticked all our boxes and gave us a great sense of relief knowing their health, safety and well-being was in good hands. They have good connections with local surgery and health professionals and we've been reassured by the liaison and prompt responses of district nurses and emergency services when they have been needed.
The staff have always been very welcoming and friendly and nothing has ever been too much trouble.
It's a very enjoyable place to visit, the residents all seem very happy and contented and our parents say they can't fault it, which is very satisfying to hear.

Our family can't thank St Luke's enough and would recommend them highly.

My nan was cared for by St Lukes for two and a half years. When we first went there it was made out to be the best of the best. She seemed to be cared for but as the years went by we noticed bruising, nails not cut, no underwear on, etc. Everything was always covered up and they always had their excuses. When she passed away they were more concerned about us emptying the room and the night staff were sat on their phone. When we went back the next day only one kind lady said sorry for your loss. I feel really sad for the other residents there.

Reply from Kim Franks, Home Manager at St Lukes & The Oaks Care Home
