My 92-year-old mother was moved to Cedars Place Care Home after a long stay in hospital with Covid.
She had mild vascular dementia and had several falls that were increasing in frequency prior to her stay in hospital. On her discharge she was unable to stand or walk and was uncooperative with the physio,
however, with the encouragement and care of the Cedars Place Care Home team she engaged with the visiting physio and although her attainment is limited the care team are continuing with her exercises and she is holding the small improvement she has made. The care and compassion shown at Cedars are exemplary.
If I have any small criticism of the Cedars, it is that there are times when it is difficult to speak to my mother on the telephone because the lines are so busy and in keeping with this sector countrywide, possibly, not enough staff on the ground.
Reply from Eve Fynn, Marketing and Communications Lead at Cedars PlaceThank you for your kind words and positive review. Your comments are very important to our team as we continue to deliver the very best care to our residents during what has been and continues to be, a very difficult time. It is a pleasure to care for your mother and to support you as a family; we are so pleased to hear how well she is improving. All the best.

I have to say that at no point did I think my mum would need the services of a care home, but when it became evident that it was the only option to ensure her continued safety, my sister and I looked carefully to find somewhere she would be happy and most importantly well cared for.
We eventually
decided on Cedars Place Care Home.
From day one I have found the staff, man or woman, to be kind, patient and caring for both Mum and also to me and my sister. I am confident that she has the care and attention she needs at this time in her life. The staff involve her in a variety of activities to keep her stimulated and interested and are on call 24/7.
I can honestly say that with the exception of her Saturday newspaper occasionally going missing (probably more her fault than theirs) I have found no reason to question or worry about her care.
Reply from Eve Fynn, Marketing and Communications Lead at Cedars PlaceThank you for taking the time to leave us such a positive review. It is a pleasure to care for your mum and support you as a family. Your comments mean a lot to the staff. Kind regards.

My mother-in-law spent just eight days here after an emergency visit to the hospital. Her recovery here was amazing. She looked fantastic when she came home (not always easy at 90). She was happy, well-fed and clearly had, had regular good interactions with the staff. When she came home she actually
said she could have enjoyed staying there, something she never wanted to do before. I think she only came home for the cat!
For our part, the staff were lovely and helpful with every aspect of Mum's stay. We would have been very happy for her to have stayed there because of the attention she had, the food she was eating and it was great to see her so happy.
Reply from Eve Fynn, Marketing and Communications Lead at Cedars PlaceThank you for taking the time to leave us such wonderful comments. The staff really appreciate your feedback and we are so pleased to have been able to care for your mother-in-law and support you as a family. All the best for the future.

My mum was transferred from hospital to The Cedars in April 2020. My mum had dementia and severe arthritis which limited her mobility. Covid meant we were unable to have the contact we dearly would have liked but the staff were so caring and always tried to arrange regular face time contact and made
special arrangements for social distance visits when they were allowed last year. My mum was happy and met new friends and enjoyed the activities provided. I took comfort knowing my mum was well cared for and looked after and the special bond she made with the staff. Sadly my mum passed away in March 2021 but I cannot thank the care home enough for making the last week of my mum's life so special for us, allowing us to spend those precious last days with dignity and compassion. The care home have done an amazing job especially during this Covid pandemic and have been put under enormous pressure to protect their residents and keep them safe.

At present, it is hard to write a full review due to Covid-19. Contact with my Mum via Facetime is very good. Mum seems happy, although it is hard to get in touch with the home sometimes. The phone just rings with no answer throughout the day. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Reply from Ruth French, Director at Cedars PlaceThank you for taking the time to review the care at Cedars Place and we are pleased that you find the staff so friendly and helpful. We are sorry you have had some problems getting through on the phone. We have been upgrading systems and moving forward, we hope that this will not be a problem.

I am so grateful to the wonderful staff for helping me with the dreadful feelings of guilt about moving my uncle into a care home. The whole move was done with such sympathy, such kindness and such reassurance that it was clearly the right time for him.
The careful process of learning about him and
his personality means that he is treated in a way that suits him and not in a standard, inflexible, uncompromising manner which I had feared. As a man who has lived alone his whole life, he can be quite a social challenge, but the staff have perfectly moulded themselves around around his ‘day to day’ in a way that leaves me in awe of their dedication, care and strength.
Thank you so much.

I reflect fondly on the experience we enjoyed with the Cedars during my father's residence there. The care and support offered to him were exceptional, and he was very happy there, whilst we, as a family, were constantly reassured. Sadly my father has now passed away, and the support and love for him
have been very evidently displayed. We were one big family, and will always remember fondly; the wonderful team of carers.

When my father was placed into a care home with dementia, I was at first nervous, but Cedars Place took away all my fears. They cared for my father with a large amount of dignity. Not only did they support my father, but they supported the rest of my family. They cared for my father as if he was part
of their family.

Mum was recently discharged from the hospital to Cedars Place. We were not able to visit of course, but spoke to staff many times on the phone and overheard staff tending to Mum when we were on the phone or FaceTiming her. The staff were always so friendly, professional and caring. Mum was really well
looked after and said how lovely everyone was to her.

My husband went to The Cedars in August 2019, after spending time in 2 other homes. I wasn't happy with either of the other homes. The care, if you can call it that, was not what I expected for the fees they charge so I took him away from both of them.
Now that he is in The Cedars, I am really happy
with the care he gets from all of the staff and the rooms are really nice and homely and refurbished each time. I don't have to visit him every day now as I know he is well cared for and he seems quite happy and so am I. The food is excellent.

My sister had a live-in carer and a house in Dunmow. After a few falls, her hospital advised that she should go to a care home. The Cedars Care Home was able to take her at short notice, one month ago. It is near my home so I am able to visit nearly every day and may do so at any time of the day. She
has been continuously well cared for despite being unable to speak coherently or to walk on her own. The staff have been caring and supportive at all times. When there have been problems, I have promptly been kept fully informed. The staff are invariably friendly and helpful. I am impressed at how kind and supportive they are to residents who can rarely communicate their needs and frequently do not want to co-operate.
They are very professional and thoughtful (at all times).

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.797)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.797) out of 10 for Cedars Place is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 30 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.797 for Cedars Place is calculated as follows: ( (278 Excellents x 5) + (62 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 344 Ratings = 4.797
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cedars Place is based on 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 63 registered maximum number of service users is 12.6, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
