Review from Jackie H (Sister of Resident) published on 15 February 2024 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

My sister started living at Evelyn May House in December 2023. She was confused and disoriented when admitted and felt very vulnerable, often hallucinating. I would say her improvement was almost immediate! This is due to the very genuine care and attention shown by all the staff working there. My sister has been made to feel safe and secure in her surroundings and valued as a person, not just another old person. She is now fully settled in her new home. Her hallucinations have ceased and she is looking the happiest and healthiest that I have seen her in a very long time. The services provided are excellent too, with her having her hair done weekly, and doctor, dentist and chiropodist visits when needed without a wait. When I've visited the staff are always happy and smiling and make an effort to chat and make you feel welcome. This is a very happy environment. All I can say is the biggest thank you to all the staff. I think you have literally saved my sister's life. Thank you.

My mother-in-law was admitted to Evelyn May House in December 2023. She was very confused and hallucinating. Immediately she arrived, she calmed down and became herself again. This was in no small measure to the care she had. All the staff were lovely and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and she began to feel safe and cared for. Recently, she had a fall, and the staff coordinated her medical needs efficiently, taking the worry away from us.

I only gave one star and that was for the building which is modern and fairly clean. My Mum went to Evelyn May during the pandemic. She has dementia so was quiet for some time and I hoped that she would relax over time. Unfortunately, she hardly ever came out of her room, we never saw her dressed. The only time her hair was tidy was when the hairdresser had been. She started to lose weight and was agitated. In early December 2023, she was admitted to the hospital 3 times in 4 weeks. I was told by hospital staff that Evelyn May had decided that they could no longer meet her needs so a new home was needed. She’s been in a new home for a few weeks. She’s put on weight, dressed and doesn’t spend any time in her room. Although she’s confused and not verbal I can tell that at last she’s being taken very good care of. Unfortunately, I don’t recommend Evelyn May for dementia patients.

I moved my uncle into Evelyn May House in March 2023 because he lived a distance away and had no family left after his son died.

It's the best move we could have done, with fantastic reception staff and care staff. My uncle was so happy with his care and his room. He has now sadly passed away. I can't thank the staff enough for how they treated him in his final days and hours. So caring and peaceful passing. 10 out of 10.

My mother has been at Evelyn May for 3 years and I can honestly say she has been the better for it. Her care is first class. The home is spotlessly clean and tidy whenever I visit and entertainment and outings for the residents is always offered to whoever wants to join in. Have no idea how the staff think of all these things. Marvellous.

I am so pleased I chose this care home for her and always praise it when it arises in conversation. I recommend it highly to anyone who needs help in this way.

Really impressed with all the care my aunt receives, everyone who works there is so caring. Nothing is too much trouble and when we have had questions someone is always on hand to answer them and deal with whatever we have asked straight away.

Thank you.

It was a difficult decision for the family for Nan to be put into care, however Nan has settled so well and is very happy at Evelyn May House. Every time we visit Nan looks clean and cared for. She seems very content. The staff are always so helpful and friendly and Nan has taken to them well. The cafe and gardens make it a lovely visit experience. It has made us all feel so much better and we know it was the best decision for Nan. She is happy and content, so what more could we ask for?

My husband and I feel this is the nicest care home we have visited. It is very clean and always smells nice, not of 'wee' which most homes smell of. Our aunt is happy here and has a good relationship with staff. The food is also very good.

Evelyn May House has been a life saver for mum, she is looked after well and is treated with dignity and respect. Mum's dementia is quite bad and she also has the added issue of diabetes which can sometimes cause problems, but we as a family feel confident that the staff do everything that is required of them and more. It is a great comfort to us all knowing that mum is in capable hands and well looked after.

Mum has been at Evelyn May House for a few months now. It has been difficult for her at times as mum was an independent lady living on her own and going out daily but since October 2021, when mum suffered a bleed on her brain, this changed. Since mum has lived at Evelyn May House we as a family feel reassured that mum is well looked after. The staff are always helpful, friendly and approachable. We feel they genuinely care for the residents. Thank you from all of mums family

My Grandad went into the home as an emergency case, the staff have been so welcoming and we couldn’t be happier with the care he has received during his time at Evelyn May. He is so settled there and we just hope he is able to stay for longer. A huge thank you to everyone there for looking after him, caring for him, and just being so kind! What has been such a stressful time for our family, it has really helped knowing he is safe and being well looked after!

Having to place a very dear loved one into a care home, which we had not even been allowed to set foot inside (due to covid), was unimaginable for us all... but there was no alternative very sadly. We chose Evelyn May House after reading such lovely reviews, and are very grateful to the manager and all those wonderful carers - who at that time, had to deal with the most horrendous situation of lockdowns, etc., and the subsequent added stress and problems this brought to their already busy workload. The current, relatively new manager, has been amazing and made many improvements within the home, we have always found him very approachable and extremely caring. All of the staff do a fantastic job, and the great majority do really seem to enjoy their role in caring for these dependent people - which is very reassuring for us, the family of a resident with dementia and Alzheimer’s. We simply cannot thank all the staff at Evelyn May House enough - for taking such good care of our loved one.

It was the hardest decision to finally place mum into care, her Alzheimer’s had become too severe for her to have intermittent home care. Whilst in the early days of becoming a resident at Evelyn May House, she was difficult and clearly showed a lot of unhappiness, slowly but surely she has recovered a little sparkle and has found contentment. She is well cared for, but most importantly for mum, shown respect. Thank you to everyone at Evelyn May House.
