Mum seems happy in the care home. She remains chatty and likes to see what is going on in the lounge and dining room at mealtimes.
12 months on from a hospital admission she is almost back to how she was, except for ageing physically and becoming less clear in what she is talking about (she does have
Alzheimer's and is 92).
The staff, all staff, treat her with dignity and humour. They keep smiling and acknowledge her requests. We know this is the right care home for Mum, now more than ever after 3 years.

Mum says the staff work hard to care for her. The food is good but not exceptional. The staff are kind and helpful when needed, although she likes to be independent as much as possible. The rooms are modern and pleasant.

Mum has been here for 10 months and the home and carers have made her very comfortable. She loves the carers, food and mentions how clean it is. We have regular updates all the time. We would highly recommend the care home.

I am extremly happy with the high level of care and concern my husband receives at Okeley.
He is treated with dignity and respect by efficient, kind and caring staff. Attention to his individual needs is always carried out compassionately and thoughtfully. I'm grateful that outstanding care is shown
with patience and understanding.

Overall Experience 3.0 out of 5
My mother has been a happy resident for the past 6 months; her room is pleasant, with enough storage and privacy. There are plenty of activities and events taking place in the care home, but I wish the carers would utilise more encouragement to persuade my mother to join in activities and shows. I recognise
deprivation of liberties, but a little encouragement may help.
There is plenty of food given, but the quality is poor, a lot of packet food, eg. breaded chicken, fish, oven chips. It would be healthier to have more freshly prepared food. The fee to reside here should enable higher quality of food.
I've witnessed my mother being pulled up the bed several times without the use of a slide sheet, which goes against moving and handling guidelines.
Things have also gone missing from my mother's room, never to reappear.
Frequently, the call bell is left out of her reach. The carers are polite, kind and caring, but the ratio to residents is low.
The internet is insufficient to support a smart TV.
Reply from Hayley Gibbs, Home Manager at Okeley Care HomeThank you for your feedback, activities will be discussed with the lifestyle coordinators regarding further encouragement, I have discussed with the admin regarding the TV as this can be directly connected for you. All food is freshly prepared in the main kitchen Mon - Sun. The home manager's office door is always open to discuss these matters.

I visited my sister-in-law from Bristol whenever visiting my brother. She was always well cared for. The home was very welcoming and the staff very kind. The home was always very clean which was a bonus as I am aware it's not always about how the home 'looks' but how the residents are cared for. My
sister-in-law was well cared for, kept safe and happy. I have now retired from Nursing and would have no hesitation in being a resident myself or recommending loved ones. Thank you to all staff at Okeley for treating my sister-in-law with dignity and respect. Also for supporting my brother on his visits.

Lovely building, and welcoming staff who will always try their best to assist in any given circumstance. Good activities where residents can enjoy themselves and relatives can see photos on the home's social media account. This means a lot when the resident's life prior to the home was a fairly inactive
one. Nice rooms, although a little small, but redecoration has been promised which would be lovely. Great staff and carers.

My father-in-law came to Okeley for respite one week a month for 6 months. He was a very difficult resident due to losing his sight and becoming very confused but all the care staff were lovely with him and tried to make him feel at home and at ease. He was assisted with feeding at mealtimes and never
felt it was too much bother. Unfortunately he passed away in November due to decline in health and the care home was lovely and so supportive. If he hadn’t passed away we would have had no worries about him continuing his respite there. Thank you to everyone who cared for him.

My sister-in-law had been living in Okeley care home for the last three years. When I found out she was moving into this care home I was so happy because of who the manager is there and the standard of care that would mean for the care given to her. I knew she would be very well looked after. I would
also like to say that the care also extended to my brother being welcomed on his visits too. The manager always creates a family feel to her care home which filters through to the staff. My sister-in-law had three happy years at Okeley and the staff were very kind and all her personal needs attended to. I am happy to recommend Okeley Care Home. Thank you so much to everyone there.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.744)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.744) out of 10 for Okeley Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 46 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 45 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.744 for Okeley Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (425 Excellents x 5) + (106 Goods x 4) + (14 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 547 Ratings = 4.744
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Okeley Care Home is based on 45 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 84 registered maximum number of service users is 16.8, which has been reached with 45 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2020

I joined Excelcare in 2016 after having been with my previous care provider for 16 years and wanting to develop my career further. I started at Sweyne Court in Rayleigh where I stayed for four years. Then in 2020, the Home Manager role became available at Okeley, and I was ready for the new challenge whilst staying with Excelcare, where I love working. It was the perfect opportunity.

I enjoy making people happy and comfortable and creating
memorable moments that the people living with us can enjoy and reminisce about. It is so wonderful seeing people previously isolated become social butterflies and make new friends.

The team are kind, caring and compassionate and puts the people living at Okeley first. They are keen and willing to learn, and I hear many positive comments about them from the residents and their loved ones. I am so proud to be part of the Okeley family
