This care home is everything you could ask for, excellent in every way. Well-staffed in beautiful surroundings. We were sad when our friend needed to be in a care home but know that she is well looked after by cheerful and helpful staff.
Reply from Rachel Marlow, Home Manager at The New DeaneryThank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your experience of our home. We are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful, caring and dedicated team here and I am delighted that this shines through. Warm wishes, Rachel.

The staff are attentive, there is a good mix of privacy and regular activities. There appears to be a recent focus on improvement, including redecoration. What is less clear is the desire and ability to extend social activities to exercise and external trips. More dialogue on medical issues would be
appreciated.

Came on Mother's Day afternoon. Brought a tea of sandwiches, cake and sausage rolls. Used the cafe room which was lovely, very comfortable with welcoming staff. Tea and coffee available.

We came in to have dinner with Mum for Mother's Day. The staff could not do enough for us and served up a nice roast dinner and trifle for dessert. We also played dominos. Mum is very happy here and it makes us very happy that she is well cared for. All of the staff are really lovely.
Reply from Rachel Marlow, Home Manager at The New DeaneryThank you for sharing your wonderful experience with us! We're thrilled that you chose to spend Mother's Day with us. It warms our hearts to hear that your mum is happy and well cared for at The New Deanery Care Home.

Mum was found very poorly in the early hours of the morning. Staff rang 999 and an ambulance arrived and she was blue-lighted to hospital, where luckily she has recovered. Very grateful to the staff and their actions. Staff are very friendly and happy to know my mum is looked after.

I am really pleased that my mum is looked after by the New Deanery. Her room is lovely and the quality of care is loving, thoughtful and responsive. I feel the carers and seniors really know my mum as a ‘person ‘ during this difficult phase of her life. As a daughter, I am welcomed, looked after and
kept informed in person or by email or telephone. Consistency of staff is important for my mum.

Today was the first time I’ve visited a resident so was unsure where to go, the manager took me to her room but then found she was in a church service downstairs! All staff I came across were extremely friendly and very clear that they loved the job, showing care and compassion to all the residents.

I have a friend of over thirty years whom I have looked after with care help in his own home for fifteen years. After two strokes and dementia, home help and him living alone became impossible. I was helped to get a place in St Mary's Court at The New Deanery care home. We have not looked back. The
location, the standard of the home and grounds are beautiful. The staff are like family. Happy and very caring. All residents look happy and there is plenty for them to do. I cannot fault the outstanding care.

I find The New Deanery to be a very good care home for my sister-in-law. She was in a poor way when she went in and has now put on weight and is a happy, cheerful and much healthier person than when she went to live there. The ratings I haven't ticked are ones I have not experienced for myself. Some
of the rooms are more spacious than the one my sister-in-law has.

The care my father receives is excellent. Following his bereavement, the staff go the extra mile to support his needs, both emotionally and physically. Medical needs are flagged up with the GP and district nurses very promptly and generally, we are very happy with the care provided at The New Deanery.

Lovely caring staff across the board. All staff go above and beyond to make The New Deanery feel like home. I wouldn’t want my Mum to live in any other residential care home. I’m always made to feel welcome and to get involved with activities. Over the last four years Mum has resided there I have made
friends with staff and other residents. Mum is safe there and cared for. There are always activities to get involved in which Mum always does. Keep up the good work.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.822)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.822) out of 10 for The New Deanery is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 41 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.822 for The New Deanery is calculated as follows: ( (391 Excellents x 5) + (78 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 472 Ratings = 4.822
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The New Deanery is based on 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 93 registered maximum number of service users is 18.6, which has been reached with 41 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Rachel Marlow

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 1999

Rachel has worked at The New Deanery for over 25 years, starting as a Care Assistant and progressing her career with various promotions as Senior Carer, Team Leader, Deputy and eventually Home Manager.

Rachels' dedication and commitment to The New Deanery is very special indeed, and her passion for her residents and staff can be seen in everything she does. Having constant leadership has led others at the New Deanery to follow in her footsteps and progress their careers at the home which in turn ensures our residents have a stable and consistent team to care for them.

When asked why she chose a career in care, she said, 'I just wanted to make a difference in the lives of the elderly.' We can certainly say she has done that and more in her quarter-century of caring for those living and working at The New Deanery.

Outside of work, Rachel is an avid cricket fan and enjoys travelling with her family and friends (but not her two furry friends, her cats Oscar and Smudge!).
