So happy with the care my mother-in-law has received since becoming a resident this April. When it became clear, that due to her dementia, she could no longer care for herself and with my husband and I work full time, it was such a relief to know how well looked after she now is. Old Shenfield Place
has given her a new lease of life. A big thank you to everyone who works there; you do a great job!

All of the staff and carers have been amazing in the last year, stepping up in unprecedented times. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been keeping the residents cheerful in isolation. Everything that could be done to boost morale, including pod visits and varied entertainment, has been without complaint.
Thanks to everyone.

The staff at Old Shenfield Place are very caring, helpful and supportive. They take time to get to know each resident and treat each of them with kindness and consideration. My mother's GP commented, unprompted, that she had every confidence in the care given and in particular the understanding of and
tailoring of care to each resident's needs. Management is always accessible to discuss or advise and know each of the residents individually really well. During these difficult times, management has been proactive in both delivering that extra care needed and taking every available step to look after and protect the residents. Many of the carers have worked at Old Shenfield Place for many years and it's always reassuring to be able to speak to and see familiar faces amongst the care staff. While this may not be the most fashionable of care homes, it's small size means each resident is cared for individually. It's a warm, welcoming and loving environment.

My mum has dementia and gets very anxious/fearful. The care provided throughout the lockdown has been fantastic. I simply do not know what we would have done. The staff at the home have been kind, respectful, and professional and I imagine they have had to give up a lot to keep residents safe. They
deserve my heartfelt thanks.

My aunt always seems clean and relatively content when I visit. My one concern is that she is not very mobile (uses a walking frame) and there are no disabled toilets in the public areas of the home. Therefore manoeuvrability within the confined space of the toilets is awkward. Also, the toilet frames
are not fixed to the floor so this is a fall hazard in my opinion. There is only one lift between floors so awkward if lift not in order.
Reply from Kim Currie, Home Manager at Old Shenfield PlaceThank you for your review. Our passenger lift is due for an upgrade in the next few months which will minimise the risk of breakdown. In light of your other comments, we will have another look at our communal facilities to see if we can improve them. If you are worried about any other aspect of your Aunt's care please do get in touch.

My stay in the home to 31 December 2018 was to aid my recovery from major surgery, however, I was left mainly to my own devices. Food was of a poor standard.

I could seldom get a warm drink after 5 pm.

Running hot water was a problem.

My request for a shower was ignored until 17th December

(11 days after my admission). The next one was on 29th December - after the carers soaped me all over, put me under the shower to find no hot water, so I had a freezing cold water shower! (by now I was also suffering from a flu type cough).

For those reasons and more you can understand why I would not recommend a stay at this home.

Reply from Nicola Palladino, Operations Manager at Old Shenfield PlaceThank you for your feedback. We are sorry that our service fell short of your expectations and note your concerns. Resident is well cared for physically - having been transferred from state of health when entered home. Is small and friendly, some staff are better and more gentle than others according to friend.
On social level could arrange sitting room so residents who can converse are able to talk. More outings
and better use of lovely garden would be good. New manager seems popular with staff - good thing for teamwork.

This care home is in a large, renovated 17th-century house, offering a pleasant atmosphere with a 'home from home' feel. The care offered is person-centred, tailored to suit the personal needs and lifestyle of the individual in detail. The staff are welcoming and friendly, where nothing is too much
trouble. The food is home cooked and of good quality. A variety of activities are offered daily to residents. Family and friends made to feel welcome and can visit any time day or night. My mother is very happy and has asked for her care to be extended on a permanent basis following respite care. Thank you to the new Manager and all the staff for everything you do.

I have been here for two years and have been well looked after. Although only 2 years I have been here, to date there has been four managers, as soon as we get used to the manager, they seem to change. Why?
Sash window in my small room needs replacing as unable to open it myself as frames very old,
and have to continue to ask for help.

An excellent care home. They look after my Aunt with care and dignity, the home is a "proper home". My Aunt recently celebrated her 100th birthday at the home with friends, relatives, and residents participating. The home staff arranged her party and it was wonderful. There were balloons, banners, food,
drink and an amazing cake. Thank you all at Old Shenfield Place. You are all doing an amazing job.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.984)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.984) out of 10 for Old Shenfield Place is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 41 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.984 for Old Shenfield Place is calculated as follows: ( (484 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 492 Ratings = 4.984
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Old Shenfield Place is based on 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 41 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Daisy

Job Title: Through the eyes of a child Programme Leader

Daisy is an 11-year-old community champion who has been visiting The Anchorage care home since she was a toddler. A few years ago, she created Through the Eyes of a Child, a heartfelt initiative designed to capture children’s honest reflections on their experiences of visiting the care home, helping staff and residents see the environment through a child’s perspective.

What began as a simple idea has grown into a meaningful programme that fosters intergenerational connections. Daisy encourages children from local schools to visit the home, building friendships with residents and taking part in activities, events, and outings. She has also developed feedback forms to ensure children’s voices are heard and valued.

Over the past year, Daisy’s compassion and dedication have been widely recognised. She has received a Champions of Care Special Recognition Award from Person Centred Software, the Community Cup from her school for her empathy and service, and the Saxon Weald Local Community Youth Winner Award for her outstanding contribution to the care home and wider community. She is also due to join the PDCCA Volunteer Friends Scheme in the New Year.

Now beginning to share Through the Eyes of a Child with other care homes across the group, Daisy continues to lead with kindness, empathy, and maturity beyond her years, proving that age is no barrier to making a meaningful difference.
